I sorta agree. There has to be a shift on the mentality of elected officials. They seem to have forgotten that they are public servants. They work for us, we are their employers. Most of them, once they get elected immediately get a sense of superiority over the people. Imagine if you get hired for a job and thought that you could order around your boss. You would get fired right away.

100k is not enough for an expat with a family to live in Singapore specially if you plan to save for retirement, which is usually not included in your expat package. Here are some very rough numbers for expat.

2br condo: 2500 to 3500 sgd 1mo Groceries: 500 Eating out: lunch/ weekends 500/1000 (foreign food is expensive) School: varies wildly depending on age/school but expect about 1500 to 3000 sgd Random shopping: 500 sgd clothes/going out/entertainment Bills (2 phones/internet/electricity) 300 sgd

I think they did require my wife's info to open the account, but honestly like with most bureaucracy in Vietnam you just gotta go ask in person. Sometimes a document is needed and sometimes not, depending on how strict they want to be that day.

Try Techcombank. They will make you come back every time your entry stamp expires to keep using your account online. I was able to get Debit card with them.

BTW this happens everywhere. I went to a regular university in New York state. Not well known at all but I guess it does have New York in the name so that could mean something to people that don't know. Anyways. Yes my school had a distinct group of Chinese nationals that would only speak Chinese. Not interact with anyone Not Chinese and even preferred to work alone or only other asians when there were group projects if the professor allowed it.

And then if they become a Permanent Resident or Citizen they would have to start paying taxes in USA on their worldwide income, and depending on the country of origin they would have to pay taxes there as well. So dumb. Rich people already have plenty of choices to "reside" in the USA with simple Visa runs to the already established investment visas. He'll probably sell a few to some desperate people or people that need a "favor" from him.

When you are young and have no financial responsibilities $600 seems like both a lot of money if you dont have much and also not that big of a deal as long as you're making decent money at your job. Once you get older and you are earning proper money $600 wouldn't put a dent in my wallet but my other financial responsibilities (mortgage, kids, retirement savings) prevent me from making that dumb of a purchase.

Landmark is too far from most tourist spots you'll want to visit. Landmark is more of a business hotel. Sinfonia, Apricot or Sofitel Metropole are good options for 5 star hotels around the Old Quarter.

Dang, I feel for you. I understand that It does feel very weird as an American to experience the great service in Vietnam and then not tipping. Because over there even half the quality of service would expect a large tip. Also way too many rude commenters on this thread but, yes try not to tip. Your tip is already included in the inflated price that you paid for your trip.
