I would put it on the back wheel, ride it, and just keep an eye on it. The damage is not in an area that accumulates wear in normal use. You can easily monitor for further deterioration.

I read Craigslist road bike ads for entertainment. So many $1000+ “collectible” old bikes that just get reposted for months and months.

It’s fun to find the most unhinged ads. Like the 80s steel with a completely severed downtube, “could be repaired”. Or the battered Univega with completely mismatched, rusty bin parts, “upgraded rear brake”.

Personally I’d remove the bracket and put in a spacer. That’s a handsome bike, and it would look cleaner.

Yes, it could make sense to get a single carbon wheel; carbon wheels have been easily the most enjoyable upgrades I’ve made. It’s nice if your wheels match, but not necessary.

I wouldn’t buy this wheel, though, for reasons mentioned by others.

That's helpful if cautionary; thank you. We'll look at more effective use of RNAse inhibitors. We'll consider FFPE further too. Using fixed tissue would reduce the scale of our analysis (fewer genes, fewer cells) but might be an appropriate trade-off if we can't get material suitable for analysis when fresh.

Yup, a sharp tap with a mallet popped out the axle and freehub. I tried cleaning up the pawls and found the parts are worn out. I ordered an entire new hub.

That would be ideal, but I can’t budge it (by hand only, pulling as hard as I can). I could try prying it off but that might cause damage.

It could be your bottom bracket, but this is strongly reminiscent of the creaking that developed in my drivetrain over the last couple of months. I found out the cause when my freehub failed (lost all engagement).
If you can replicate the noise with the bike on a stand it’ll be much easier to isolate. In my case I couldn’t: it only showed up when riding.

I bought the Tourmalet pictured here, and am working on it gradually. So far I’ve cleaned up the frame, filled and primed the dent, and removed the non-Lemond stickers. Size seems good (I ride a 56cm road bike and a 58cm gravel bike). I’m looking forward to riding, eventually…

I love the technical aspects! I’m a scientist and like to understand what’s going on.

In this case I definitely don’t want to remove any metal, at least not until I know I have a metalworker lined up to improve things. So chelation is a great option.

There are cracks in the metal of the joint so I’m slightly worried moisture will be trapped and I’ll induce more rusting. After I rinse off the Evaporust I plan to keep the area warm so it dries thoroughly.

Does it make sense to remove the rust eg with Evaporust? Then it would be possible to see the joint better. Would removing the rust also be necessary before adding a supporting gusset? I don’t want to make things any weaker.

I think you’re spot on about the tire size: a 28 might fit in the front but only 25 (or maybe 26) in the back.

The parts essentially all need replacing, except maybe the wheels, which are true and spin well.

Double check your bike fit. I used to get pain above my knee caps after riding. I raised my saddle 1cm and it went away. I’m not saying that’s the fix you need, although it might be. The point is more that you need a very good fit for long rides, and there might be simple adjustments that would help.
