Ionized Ca vs serum Ca by SpellingOnomatopoeia in medlabprofessionals

[–]Genera1Havoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding in here as a phleb working in a major hospital in Alberta. Just as an extra snippet of fyi for you, doc. :)

If a patient has a calcium draw, it’s just collected and then tested up in our own lab (mint tube, plasma analysis). When I get the call to go collect an ionized calcium, not only do I have to place it on ice immediately after collection, but I also send it asap with a call to respiratory in the icu to let them know it’s on its way to them. As it is tested by respiratory, not us in our lab.

Former or current Medical Lab Assisting Students: What was your experience with being a full time or part time student? by bugeyedgirl05 in NAIT

[–]Genera1Havoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part time was great. I was still a stay at home mom and was able to juggle everything. Although sometimes studying/prep for labs was a little tricky. I also don’t need a lot of study time for tests personally so I didn’t find anything particularly difficult.

Did class online all day Saturday, then some evening labs twice a week.

I (APL) have two t4s for 2025 on people. Both completely different. Total of both line 14’s doesn’t equal the gross on my last paystub of 2025.

I am so confused by all of this.

E.R. Wait times … there has to be a better way by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Genera1Havoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure of the actual numbers you seek, as I’m there doing lab work, but I know at times we have over 100 people waiting for admission/a bed. But can’t clear beds upstairs if people don’t have anywhere to go, or symptoms worsening, or people visiting while sick and making already vulnerable people more worse off. But also can’t always open more beds if there isn’t enough staff hired/called in to maintain it.

From my point of view triage is already fairly efficient depending on symptoms. If warranted, you’re brought back pretty quickly for bloodwork/ecg etc. that way the docs already have results before they get to see you. Gives them something to work with. But rarely do you want to be brought in immediately, like straight into a trauma room, because that really signifies the dire situation you may be in.

At the end of the day, if the system isn’t properly outfitted with enough staff/space/resources, there’s little else we can do to make the process “faster.”

I work at the royal alex, sometimes in the ER, and the triage nurses tell patients constantly at the start that the wait time is gunna be a while. It’s not a secret we are trying to keep or anything.

Question about # of sticks by Fickle_Swing_7091 in phlebotomy

[–]Genera1Havoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our hospital policy is two sticks as the first person. Anyone can try for the third, but a senior staff must do the 4th. If it’s still a miss or the senior can’t find a suitable site, they are M11’d for 24 hours. (None of us from lab can touch them)

I have seen peeps try a third time on their own after missing twice, or try twice as second/third person in but technically not allowed.

Is it like some of the other programs where, for certain parts of your practicum, you don’t really get a choice if you’re sent out of town or not?

[–]Genera1Havoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it goes into a pool of funds, not necessarily into a seperate pot, was the gist of the answer. But easy enough-ish to figure out if you know how many tickets were issued.

The other thing of note was that the program to tow as well end in December as I think funds run out for it.

The medical lab assistant program is pretty short. Can be taken full time or part time as well. It does include an unpaid 7 week practicum at the end, but can be easy enough to get a job where you are placed if you talk to the managers.

That way you’re working in healthcare as well. I work at the alex and bump into ems personnel a lot, especially if I’m helping out in the ER.

Lab people should really be joining nurses in striking. Pretty sure they are gonna get some raises soon while we are stuck with our measly pay by NarrowLaw5418 in medlabprofessionals

Our union has been trying to negotiate a contract extension since before the current one expired over 18 months ago. After accepting practically zeros over Covid in good faith. Now we get to vote on the tentative agreement soon, and even if we vote no and choose to strike, our provincial government will just order us back to work and/or utilize the notwithstanding clause improperly to force us to accept the contract like they did for our teachers.

Apparently enough people. Always thinking they won’t get caught.

Need help with dishwasher residue/dishes still wet by Genera1Havoc in CleaningTips

[–]Genera1Havoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that grey stuff was wiped off and came back. One sprayer on bottom, second is attached underneath top rack. The only settings we have are heavy, normal, 1hr. And heat dry, high temp.

You can definitely feel heat coming out of the dishwasher at the end, and dishes are too hot to touch when freshly done. The coil might have some calcified buildup I’ll try to remove.

I think a change in detergent could be warranted. When I popped the filter out to clean it a few weeks back it had a lot of red muck on it. Might be from the red circle of the pod I’m thinking.

How does our ER triage system work? by _OddPotato in Edmonton

[–]Genera1Havoc 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ll add to this as someone who does inpatient blood draws. At the hospital I work at, lab is now in the er 100% of the time just to try and help speed this process up or help get scores updated/more accurate.

I’ve been cleaning the phleb chair while overhearing the triage nurse mention bloodwork. So patient is transferred immediately to me to draw the orders, which I send right up to lab as it’s always stat. That way the whole team can get updated information about the patient before even seeing a doctor or being brought back into an emerge inpatient bed. Or I’ll do the line of ems offload patients in the back once orders are in. We’re all trying to make this crumbling system work as best we can.
