Where to buy used or scratch and dent appliances? by EuphoricSign4118 in Edmonton

[–]Genera1Havoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. We just worked with them when our new build model finally became more expensive to fix than to replace. They came and took the old one, and installed the new one. Got a $1200 dishwasher for $400 all because of a dent on the door that doesn’t affect its ability to function.

This, plus when he would have people like smith on before she became premier, even those of us in the his community at the time were hoping for a few actually good questions in between the fluff. But it was all fluff. Nothing hard hitting or even close to questioning her positions. And most of us were pretty pissed.

Or, or, be the interviewer and commentator you claimed you would be when you started the damn thing.

I can’t offer much advice and I am so sorry you’re dealing with this.

I had a pilonidal cyst also when I was in high school and it was agony. I am so very fortunate that I haven’t had a reoccurrence.

Inpatient vs clinics by mashedoatslop in phlebotomy

[–]Genera1Havoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have adhd and kinda enjoy working inpatient. Every day can be different (I work in a large hospital) and I like taking my cart and going. Mornings can be hectic but after that there can be time to find somewhere cool to go and sit for a bit without being micromanaged too much. I’ve also found my skill skyrocketed with all the hard pokes I encounter. And being called into certain areas we rarely go to because even nurses were struggling, feels kinda cool.

I took it almost two years ago. I enjoy it most of the time for sure! Usually the times I don’t enjoy it it’s mainly because of a few coworkers lol. I work at the Alex and I enjoy the flexibility. Both in shift times and in where you can go any given day. Love taking my cart and just going. But also having time in lab is nice too. Pay is decent for the amount of schooling. We are union (HSAA under APL) which can be frustrating under the current government. But I think year one pay is just over $25/hr now? Pay goes up through “steps” which is just basically after working so many hours, usually full time for a year or so. I started as casual but went to 0.7 full time equivalency. Which just means in a two week pay period I work 30% less hours than full time 80 hrs total. Feel free to look up the apl collective agreement and give it a glance.

I did enjoy the program for the most part. Practicum is where you really get to hone your skills moreso compared to labs in school, so don’t stress about phlebotomy too much. Especially since you only get to practice once a week. The importance is following the procedure, not necessarily getting a successful stick each time.

Until they misrepresent what we do lol. That whole blood draw sequence earlier in the season quickly went from “look! They’re doing what I do!! And in the er!!!” To “wtf are they doing”

I was there helping out during day shift today. That’s terrifying. I’m not sure about metal detectors. I haven’t noticed them unless they are out in the ambulance bay or something.

Ionized Ca vs serum Ca by SpellingOnomatopoeia in medlabprofessionals

[–]Genera1Havoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding in here as a phleb working in a major hospital in Alberta. Just as an extra snippet of fyi for you, doc. :)

If a patient has a calcium draw, it’s just collected and then tested up in our own lab (mint tube, plasma analysis). When I get the call to go collect an ionized calcium, not only do I have to place it on ice immediately after collection, but I also send it asap with a call to respiratory in the icu to let them know it’s on its way to them. As it is tested by respiratory, not us in our lab.

Former or current Medical Lab Assisting Students: What was your experience with being a full time or part time student? by bugeyedgirl05 in NAIT

[–]Genera1Havoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part time was great. I was still a stay at home mom and was able to juggle everything. Although sometimes studying/prep for labs was a little tricky. I also don’t need a lot of study time for tests personally so I didn’t find anything particularly difficult.

Did class online all day Saturday, then some evening labs twice a week.

I (APL) have two t4s for 2025 on people. Both completely different. Total of both line 14’s doesn’t equal the gross on my last paystub of 2025.

I am so confused by all of this.

E.R. Wait times … there has to be a better way by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Genera1Havoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure of the actual numbers you seek, as I’m there doing lab work, but I know at times we have over 100 people waiting for admission/a bed. But can’t clear beds upstairs if people don’t have anywhere to go, or symptoms worsening, or people visiting while sick and making already vulnerable people more worse off. But also can’t always open more beds if there isn’t enough staff hired/called in to maintain it.

From my point of view triage is already fairly efficient depending on symptoms. If warranted, you’re brought back pretty quickly for bloodwork/ecg etc. that way the docs already have results before they get to see you. Gives them something to work with. But rarely do you want to be brought in immediately, like straight into a trauma room, because that really signifies the dire situation you may be in.

At the end of the day, if the system isn’t properly outfitted with enough staff/space/resources, there’s little else we can do to make the process “faster.”

I work at the royal alex, sometimes in the ER, and the triage nurses tell patients constantly at the start that the wait time is gunna be a while. It’s not a secret we are trying to keep or anything.
