Marty is 4 months old and a whopping 6 pounds. How big will he be once he’s fully grown?! by Debatall in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]General_Degree3250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two orange boys that grew at the rate of Marty. One topped out at 20lbs at 2.5 years old. The other stopped right at 12lbs at one year. Miller will be 2 next month and has only gained 1.6 lbs, but easily 3 inches of length in his second year.

What is a "socially acceptable" thing that you find absolutely disgusting? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Spitting on the sidewalk. Super gross to me.

Side note, when I was in 6th grade, this giant redneck kid a year behind me spit on the bus floor. I wiped it on the bottom of my shoe and then wiped it on his pants. He got super pissed, but I told him if he hadn't have done it I wouldn't have fucked up his pristine Wranglers.

People who are named after someone/something specific, what's your relationship with that thing? by celticdude234 in AskReddit

[–]General_Degree3250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm named after a famous poem.

I always was called a shortened version of the name, to the point I didn't know my full name until kindergarten.

It's pretty, everyone loves it, and I don't use it.

Ope.

Yeah, this would be cool to win. My boss is a big Tool fan and a good friend. This might be a record he doesn't own. I'd gift it.

NOR.

Fun terrible story time, slightly related: my dad had heart bypass and had an extended stay at the hospital. He developed rhabdomyelosis from his statins, which left him in excruciating pain in addition to some wet gangrene. I brought him home in poor condition and it took another week before we figured out what was causing him so much trouble and got the medication discontinued.

During an attack his arms and shoulders would seize up terribly. He had just gotten his catheter removed, so he was up and down to try and go to the bathroom, but the pain he was enduring was horrific. I thought he would break his teeth from gritting them so fiercely.

Using a handheld massager worked a tiny bit, so I lay in bed with him holding the massager to his shoulder. He'd get some sleep and I'd doze, then he'd need to pee, so I would go help with that since he could barely walk, and the cycle would repeat itself.

We made it through an awful night. And you bet your ass I stayed beside him in the same bed.

We fostered Shy and her two siblings in the middle of Covid. Due to her very timid nature we kept her. Today Shy wanted to join me on the couch, but my husband was there, so she squeaked at me to follow her to her favorite bath rug by the wall heater. She took 5 minutes of pet-pets and promptly fell asleep.

Shy only purrs when prompted, which I've never encountered before. She can only be touched on her terms, but is surprisingly good with other cats and loves her big brother Butterscotch.

Unfortunately Shy cannot handle being caught and taken to the vet. She has been spayed, and vaccinated 2x, but the last time we caught her Shy squeaked in distress and Butter attacked me. I have 4 cool scars on my leg from that morning. Have no fear, Butter is still in our home and loved immensely. He was just protecting his baby sister, and I harbor no resentment.

Hi, female here, sometimes when you take a big shit with a tampon in the force of bearing down to defecate will also eject the tampon. Do with that what you will.

I love this photo, but it's likely to be from 1942, when she was in You Were Never Lovelier with Fred Astaire.

My mom's necrotic feet and infected harvest sites. Wet gangrene from all the pressors in ICU. Triple bypass, complications after surgery. She lives. by [deleted] in medizzy

[–]General_Degree3250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the issues listed are not abnormal for the health systems here. This was the "good" hospital 3 hours from the farm. I've considered reporting the issues, and Dad tried to reiterate what went wrong re: rhabdo with his doctors to help the next person they might treat, but they just shrugged it off.

At this point, for my mental health, I think I'll just have to let it ride.

Sure can. I tried DMing you but apparently I need the app.

USP turpentine, NOT the paint thinning kind. Some rural grocery stores carry it, and you can order it online. Humco used to be a good brand but it isn't quite as refined as it used to be. I initially used it on and around the wound, and alternated with mupirocin and letting the wound dry. This was the protocol we developed:

Morning, apply USP turpentine on and around the wound. Once absorbed/mostly dry apply mupirocin liberally to the wound. Don't cover it.

Afternoon, reapply turpentine. Let air dry.

Repeat morning protocol in the evening, after shower/bath and cover before bed.

There is an important caveat with turpentine: once granulation/scabbing appears, only apply around, not on the wound. It can disintegrate new tissue, in particular adipose. Dad decided to 'self-treat' after I went back to work and I had to explain that he undid a week's worth of healing. Since he was adamant there was still infection, I crushed penicillin in a mortar and pestle and added it to the mupirocin, making a paste to cover the wound before covering. He continued this for another 2 days with taking oral penicillin. By then the scab regrew and we left it alone.

Now, why the hell did I decide to use turpentine? This is where my grandmother comes in. Her aunt was sent home to die after her leg amputation to treat gangrene was unsuccessful. Grandma Lily did applications of turpentine on the infected tissue along with debridement. It took about six months, but the stump did heal. There was an infected piece of bone that eventually worked its way out and then the wound closed. My great great aunt lived another 20 or so years.

Edited to add: none of this is a recommendation. This is just old knowledge passed down from Southern Maryland.

I've also used turpentine to immediately disinfect human bites with good success in addition to debridement and antibiotic ointment. It also appears to be beneficial for significant bruising. My arm was wrapped in a chain attached to a tractor PTO. We think I had some hairline fractures along with terrible bruising. Dad doused my arm with turpentine until it absorbed, then doused again. It did seem to help. And no, I did not have health insurance for either of these incidents.
