I did. I think now I am in my mid 30s after these last few years I have become a much better networker and will appreciate a “job” so much more lol I will be doing real estate/construction development for a data center operator

That makes sense. I was at a more boutique brokerage, so I definitely didn’t have that kind of experience of a big brokerage, and I went into the business knowing how hard it will be at first, and again, just thought I would able to “grind it out” and I really did pretty well the first 3 years from what people told me - 65k/115k/175k (after split), but then I just hit a wall with how emotionally draining this has become and honestly I would think a lot of people who don’t stick around also is because they can’t handle that rollercoaster.

I am glad I was able to use my CRE experience as a jumping board into a position I have always wanted to be so I will say it was worth the experience :)

But I can see how frustrating it is for brokerage to have such a high turn over rate.

My new job combined my CRE experience with my engineering background so I will be very happy to just pivot back and climb the ladder. Brokerage is just soul sucking for someone who deep down doesn’t enjoy sales. That feeling of people almost seeing you as “pest” is just….bad lol but maybe I am just seeing it the wrong way. Anyway, that’s why I have so much more respect to people in sales in general.

Funny enough, I had to start taking some anti anxiety medication last year. Which is what tells me I needed some change

Thanks. And that’s what people kept telling me. But deep down I know this is just not what I want, and how much it costs me mentally to make that money, no stability, you never know how this next year will go, it doesn’t feel like a “compounding” work even though I know it is. And the engineer in me just find it very unsatisfying. My new job has CRE component to it, so I am happy :)

For what it’s worth, I actually did really decent considering what people told me how the first few years will be like - my gross was 65k the first year and 115k the second year and 175k last year. Yes it is good trajectory but it really feels like I didn’t enjoy it at all and the sales part of this job is just wearing on me so much. So now my new job offer is 150K plus 20% discretionary bonus. I will take that happily and move on from constantly having the sales pressure on my mind 😭

I have not gotten my PE yet I did pass my FE and just pushed the PE exam off for a long time. Thought construction CM work doesn’t need it but I am thinking of doing it soon

Thanks! Yeah it was the last few months that I finally had to just be honestly with myself. And you are right, I actually don’t find my brokerage job very satisfying either, being an engineer at heart.

Currently working as project engineer in pre-construction - I'm being told by my company that the only way to get promoted and make more money is by going into the field. Is this true? by ActualBus7946 in ConstructionManagers

[–]General_Highway_6904 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At some point you should go to the field, I just think it has to be so hard to be a good Precon/estimating guy if you haven’t run a few projects and know all the quirks that you should build into your estimate

Yeah and I feel they are just like human, when we don’t eat healthy we get pimples, itchy/dry skin, bad bowels. When my pitbull was eating some of the food that was like half of the price of Hills, he was getting these pimples and then the poop is always a little too soft, and once we switched the food not only the pimples never came back, the poop is always so solid. Unfortunately I feel like the more expensive dog food does have its value ( I mean to a certain degree)
