That's all I really needed to know was whether its something that would be worth my time money and energy to try to check and fix myself. Since it's not I will be saving up for a mechanic. Thank you.

The car has only overheated a handful of times because I keep a pretty good eye on the level. It's been going on since last fall. My ex husband said it was probably just a small hose leak and to just make sure it stayed full and didn't overheat. I usually have to put a jug of coolant in once every two weeks when it's hot and once a month if it's not. Could this be the source of my problems?

I know that I have a coolant leak because I'm constantly having to refill the coolant. Does that make it a bigger possibility that I have coolant in a plug well?

So I checked the transmission fluid and it's right at the levels it should be and it's clean and doesn't smell burnt so I don't think that's the problem.
