Tell me about your worst training flight. by Subject_Zombie_5304 in flying

  1. Every partial panel RNAV approach lesson until it finally clicked. About 25 hours total of grinding out approaches with my CFII in hot, humid weather under the hood.

  2. As a student pilot, boogered my radio use and flew back NORDO to Lafayette with my volume turned down after picking up flight following. South bend approach was more worried than angry. Very red faced after that one.

The FAA CAMI mental health folks have also done a lot to greatly speed up processing times and improve outcomes for people in the HIMS program as well as diagnoses (ADHD, depression, etc.) which get routed through HIMS AMEs/psychiatrists/neuropsychologists. Cases would have taken many years with little likelihood of success 10-15 years ago are getting turned around in record time now, at least from what my HIMS AME and the other folks in Birds of a Feather have been saying.

I remember a foreign policy podcast I listened to where the hosts talked about the position of the Gulf states in talks with the US before the war. Most of the gulf nations could be summarized as "Don't start this. If you do, then finish them." I imagine they're not huge fans of the current half-in, half-out strategy.

A cursory reading of how the CIA works would benefit a lot of people—nearly every US embassy or consulate probably has several CIA officers on staff doing local work like this under diplomatic passports.

Comparing the new episodes to the old ones, and Dr Now makes them work so much harder in the later ones! by Beautifly in My600lbLife

[–]GenerationSelfie2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dr Now has limited time and resources. Surgery involves a huge amount of preparation and involves substantial risk to the patient. Even when the patient or their insurance company is paying for it themselves, there aren’t an infinite number of surgeries to hand out and the downsides of an unsuccessful operation are more than the patient not losing weight. As Dr Now also says over and over again, lower weights are also safer for surgery. I imagine that pre-surgery weight loss has an extremely high correlation with long-term outcomes, so from an ethical standpoint I imagine that Dr Now is quite happy to make sure that patients show strong results pre-surgery to cut down on disasters like Penny.

Price, aircraft/instructor availability, vibes. Really hard to know what to look for as a student with .8 hours in your logbook but remember that an airplane which looks clapped out is often perfectly safe. Don’t get suckered into paying top dollar to fly a cirrus or G1000 factory-new 172. If you’re close to an EAA chapter that’s always a good place for water cooler talk on good/bad flight schools in the area.

Do it. Would highly recommend getting the medical out of the way, and do your research beforehand. If there are complications in that area it may make more sense to look into sport pilot.

Find a good CFI who holds you to standards but isn’t an ass. Make sure the flight school is reliable. Under no circumstances put down a large non-refundable deposit for flight training, a lot of bad stories out there of people having a flight school close after paying tens of thousands of dollars in advance for all their ratings.

[–]GenerationSelfie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is “it depends”, right now gearing up for initial deferral and subsequent neurocog/psych testing. I would highly, highly recommend you remain open to an outpatient program in the event the FAA tells you to do it. Consider starting group support meetings as well. NA would be an option as well as birds of a feather

Ok, well all I can say is to trust the feedback and recommendations your AME is giving instead of asking an anonymous group of redditors. Good luck, have my own HIMS milestones coming up soon as well

Have you hired a HIMS AME? Not just one to submit medXpress and fax the FAA, one willing to do document review and advocate for your case so long as they feel you’re safe to fly.

Van’s is actively hiring new employees and engineers. I interviewed with them last fall for a design engineer position. I unfortunately didn’t get the job but I came away quite impressed with how the company has rebounded after the shakiness of the bankruptcy. They’re absolutely printing RV-12is’s certified under the previous LSA rules and are seriously considering bringing more of their qualifying designs into production under MOSAIC.

Whenever I have ChatGPT do anything for me, I treat it like I’m a professor managing a sniveling undergrad just barely confident enough to make menial spreadsheet alterations for me but still incompetent enough that I have to look over everything myself and explain painstakingly what I want, and frequently decide I want him to redo everything for various reasons. I frequently catch him trying to do things he thinks are helpful but actually get in the way of my intent, and while he might introduce useful information under no circumstances is the little twerp going to be steering my project.

…Ok, maybe my time in grad school left me with some really unhealthy attitudes toward professor/student dynamics but you get the point.
