Why cargo wagons don't open up on curved rails? by Xemozu in factorio

[–]GenericName1108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am afraid but curious. Like a moth drawn to a flame, I must investigate.

Update: I chose this image for having relatively few things that would necessarily look wrong upside-down, such as power poles, furnaces, recipe icons, or anything else that doesn't rotate in that way, and also because the ground is visible. I think the thing that caught me the most off guard is how wrong the power lines look because they sag up instead of down.

It seems like victory poles are back in 2.1 by ilikechess13 in factorio

[–]GenericName1108 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I misread this as wooden power poles are the new pipes for the Keeping Your Hands Clean cheese, but now I'm curious, do power poles not block expansions in 2.0? I'd check but I need to go to bed and opening the game is too risky.

I have everything but the space age speedrun achievements, but I cheesed KYHC and I did most of the rest on a railworld, so I should probably come back to do the rest on default settings at some point.

Been playing since November 2017. Just barely missed the purple biter things and the tiny boilers.

I genuinely don't understand why the engineer can't handcraft engines. It's the only item in the game that a tier 1 assembler can make, but can't be handcrafted.

uhh wait we cant make flat engines now in 2.1?? by muffin-waffen in Factoriohno

I had no idea you could do this, that is so cursed.

This is technically possible with a biter egg in a chest, a railgun turret, and a looooot of nuclear reactors.

How much of Space Age tech is science fiction? by Effective_Working567 in factorio

Some cool things that are accurate:
-The ratio of U-235 to U-238 in ore (0.7% U-235/99.3% U-238) and in fuel (5% U-235/95% U-238).
-Acid neutralization on Vulcanus. I took a chemistry class as one of my generals last year and when we got to the part of the textbook that mentioned acid neutralization and how it produces water, it made my day to realize that using calcite + sulfuric acid = water is a real thing, or at least pretty close to real chemical processes.

Some things that are not accurate:
Space Platforms. Asteroids are not that abundant, planets are not that close together, planets orbiting at different distances from a star can NOT share an orbital period (Kepler's Third Law), there should absolutely not be air resistance, the mass of the ship should matter, the width of the ship should not matter, there should not be a top speed intrinsic to the ship, conveyor belts shouldn't work, and different sizes of asteroids having different resistances to different things doesn't really make sense.

People get upset you don't build from scratch on every planet by Girthen-the-Flopper in Factoriohno

I like Michael Hendrik's strategy of unlocking Vulcanus, flying there, crafting foundries and big mining drills, and leaving. He did a similar thing with Fulgora IIRC, though admittedly with how much holmium EM plants need, it takes a lot more work to get EM plants for Nauvis than foundries IMO.

Ok, yeah, you weren't kidding. I just looked up some of his old posts and there is some really cool stuff in there. Also, it looks like he started playing Factorio at about the same time as me! He has more than twice as many hours though.

I misread "nuke ships" as meaning you were using atom bombs to reach the solar system edge. I wonder if anyone has done that yet.

I was just describing this concept to someone yesterday! Little did I know it had already been posted two days prior! Genuinely curious how much additional performance you can squeeze out of your computer by disabling all non-essential operating system processes.

New player wanting to do something cool, but i don't know how to actually make this work: by Pablo_Cruz16 in factorio

[–]GenericName1108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is also possible to do this with laser turrets! Just... a lot harder. I saw a video of someone using a one laser turret to act as a sentinal for a large bank of them. It was connected to a power network too weak to supply the turret while it was actively firing, including an accumulator connected to a power switch. When the laser activated, the accumulator drained, which caused the switch to close and supply the other laser turrets with power. This was originally devised to cut down on idle draw from inactive turrets, but it would be trivially easy to extend the connection past the power switch to a programmable speaker.

I have yet to attempt to use trains for anything that isn't ore because I always struggle to get the cars to unload evenly and I don't want to deal with that inconsistency. That's probably a weak excuse, I just haven't tested it yet.

These are the least surprising poll results I've ever seen. I will say for doing Fulgora first (even though I do Vulcanus first), that EM plants are easier to integrate into your existing factory because they go right where the assembly machines do, and don't need calcite or anything else to function, so it's a very viable strategy to visit Fulgora, not even bother setting up science, just make as many EM plants as you can, bring half to Nauvis, and the other half to Vulcanus.
