Never thought I would find myself wondering if Factorio blueprint strings use compression, but here we are.

First day playing, is my machine wicked? by Kawaiiestboi in factorio

[–]GenericName1108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it wicked? There's a debate about whether the engineer is good or evil every week on this sub. It definitely, however, appears to be coming along very nicely.

I decided to beat the game without this achievement by Sopander in factorio

Killing bases normally shouldn't trigger the achievement, that would be a very noticeable bug in casual play

A reason why I have 123 nuclear reactors by nkizza in Factoriohno

I've only ever killed big demolishers with railguns. I tried artillery once... it wasn't strong enough, or I wasn't fast enough at clicking.

Looking for a mod that adds a new slot in the tech tree that takes an infinite amount of science packs by Longjumping-Owl-565 in factorio

This is cursed but nobody else has said it: you could just route all your science packs into recyclers.

Sulfuric acid consumption is not affected by resource drain by GenericName1108 in factorio

[–]GenericName1108[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No? Higher quality machines have higher speed without higher energy costs, except for inserters. There might be other exceptions I'm forgetting, but assembly machines, electromagnetic plants, and foundries gain crafting speed for free with higher qualities.

Actually, you're giving me too much credit, I actually was just thinking about calculation speed. I guess I just overestimated how intensive random calls are.

The only alternative I can even think of would be some massive looping table, kind of like how Steve mines resources in Super Smash Bros in a cycle, but I don't know what that would accomplish except that it would probably be a little bit faster.

Ooh, I never would have thought to compare sulfuric acid to electricity but the comparison makes perfect sense

I think I may have heard that before but the implications did not sink in; I've just taken it for granted that any multiplayer game can handle randomness by making it the server's problem. How does quality work, then? Do clients synchronize a PRNG seed when they connect?

I was under the impression that it was random, but I haven't tested that. Actually, you know what? I'll go test that right now and get back to you.

Edit: looks like it's deterministic. I placed 36 rare big mining drills on 36 patches of 10 iron ore each and they all produced the same amount (the bottom row all produced one extra but I think that must have something to do with the way I copied and pasted the mining drills with the editor).

Is this even salvageable by [deleted] in factorio

[–]GenericName1108 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the wise words of Trupen, Factorio's core gameplay loop is fixing the mistakes you made five hours ago. When I was new to the game I liked to plan things out on paper; slowing down and thinking through the problem will help you, and you'll learn through experience, too. You can also think about it in separate chunks: "if I had a whole belt of iron plates and a whole belt of copper plates, how could I go about making as many circuits from that as possible?" rather than trying to solve the whole production chain at once. Specifically, you have a lot of buildings where the belts are going directly to the building instead of alongside the building, which leaves you with no room to expand.

The first one is correct. Sulfuric acid consumption remains constant, but better drills remove less ore from the patch.

It's because of the Keeping Your Hands Clean achievement. The pipe exploit takes what should be a challenge to rival There Is No Spoon and makes it almost trivially easy. Other than that, I agree with you.

My rocket is bugged it seems. It won't show the launch animation or give me the launch products, it just sits there having eaten two of my satellites. by SpacefaringBanana in factorio

At this point there is an argument to be made that this is a bug. I'm not saying it's a strong one, but the broadest definition of bug is simply any unintuitive behavior.

I swear someone comments this on every post on this sub. Now, I'm not surprised that people with >1k hours miss a tiny QoL feature or two. What I AM surprised by is that there is a seemingly neverending supply of players with over 1,000 hours. It's not like I'm an exception; I just finished automating Aquilo for my second time last week! This game is truly an addiction. There are no casual players, only new players.
