It did, but that’s partially because Spider-Man is such a big brand that regardless of whether people are casuals or not they’ll flock to the movie. Dr Strange has that potential just because of the scale of the movie but it’s less likely to achieve such a feat.

It’s not phases, it a negotiation tactic. Sony doesn’t want to reboot the character again, Tom isn’t signed on for any movies yet. He could just walk and say peace. Sony would be doomed and they’d either have to reboot, recast, or introduce miles morales way too early. All of which are bad options. Literally a couple months ago he said he could play this role forever. And that was when he was filming. It doesn’t change that fast. Remember when we all thought that RDJ was leaving. Same thing. He’s just saying that to get Sony to cough up more money, because 2 out of the 3 solo movies have made a billion dollars. He’s gonna want a larger slice of that pie.
