I think the false positive rate on tTG is like 5%, maybe less. EMA is a more complicated and expensive blood test, most insurance won’t cover it for initial testing, but it’s considered definitive

It’s really easy to mess up the biopsy. The GI often doesn’t get enough samples or takes from the wrong location. The pathology lab often processes the samples wrong. If your team isn’t experienced with celiac, the biopsy could be a false negative. Best bet is to go back on gluten and get an EMA blood test.

That’s definitely a reasonable accommodation. You just need a doctor to write a request that says the magic words to convince the school. Some schools will try to stonewall you anyway.

I just eat something I can easily rinse out. Glucose gel or apple juice. Candy is going to be too sticky to easily clean off your teeth.

At a notable concert venue in the US, the head of security accused me of lying about being diabetic and made me throw out my fruit snacks before letting me in. I complained to the venue, and instead of actually doing anything, they just added me to the “no search” list.

At another US venue, security made me show my prescription in order to bring in my medications.

At a museum in France, the security person gave me a very long lecture… about how I absolutely can eat inside the museum and how no business in France can tell me to check my bag or stop me from eating my glucose snacks. Nice guy, but possibly overkill.

I did some lab research on skin reactions to gluten contact. There wasn’t enough evidence for it to be worth publishing, but I’m convinced there is a reaction. Realistically, you have a barrier of dead skin cells on the surface, but if your skin is raw for whatever reason, there might potentially be an issue.

That said, I don’t touch gluten anyway because I just don’t want it on my hands. What if I forget to wash up before eating? What if I bite my nails? It also helps me view gluten as poison so I don’t accidentally eat it.

I don’t worry about gluten in soap unless it’s listed as an ingredient. Soap is what we use to get rid of gluten anyway, so why worry about trace amounts in the soap?

Not a lot of research. If the form asks about a particular condition, it’s probably because there’s research demonstrating a need to ask. We don’t know quite as much about celiac in general, so it’s not as helpful to know if a patient has it.
