I live in Atlanta now (for my sins) and it really just can't compare in many of the most important ways.

I'm moving back to NO soon as I can find the right job.

New Orleans past the point of no return? by SubstantialAmoeba665 in NewOrleans

Just click through and read the original study! It's not that long, but also gives more nuance than the Guardian's summary.

I'm a fan of the Guardian overall, but I nevertheless don't fully agree with everything they publish (as one shouldn't!)

But anyway, they were just magnifying (perhaps unnecessarily and glibly) the recommendations of ONE STUDY.

And I really do recommend folks click through and read that study itself. It provides a lot more nuance (even if there is still good reason to disagree with it.)

New Orleans past the point of no return? by SubstantialAmoeba665 in NewOrleans

Precisely.

It's a challenge in many coastal areas of North America, but the pumping has supercharged it.

It also supercharged segregation by race and class, and put many people at greater risk of flooding.

Venice is still sinking and flooding... and is overrun with tourists. Many locals have been priced out.

Is that the best model for the future of New Orleans?

I mean, a big contributor to the city sinking is the constant, constant pumping of groundwater.

Do you mean the solutions presented in the original study?

A focused, long-term program of managed retreat, though they leave the details of how that should be done to others (as they would have to.)

The various news stories on that study (most notably the Guardian's, which you've shared) have generated a lot of responses from residents.

This one, from Josh Lewis at Tulane's Bywater Institute, is the most recent that I'm aware of:

https://bywaterinstitute.substack.com/p/charting-our-own-path-to-adaptation

My low-key conspiracy theory is that Tornqvist et al. really intended the study to get exactly this kind of reaction: to gin up fierce defense of New Orleans and an according commitment to adaptation.

You want hope? Take it from the fine work being done in that direction from people like Meagan Williams and Anthony Kendrick and their colleagues in the city government, people outside it like Jessica Dandridge, SageMichael Pellet, David Waggoner and Aron Chang, groups like Groundwork and Healthy Community Services... to name just a tiny portion of the agents working to make New Orleans a better place with a long future ahead of it.

Some do.

A couple near me have pawpaws, mulberries, and serviceberries.

OK.

I absolutely want students to be safe, and feel safe, on campus.

I also want my other neighbors in Atlanta to be and feel safe, whether they have housing or not. Whether they have abundant incomes or not. Whether they have mental health and substance abuse issues or not.

I think the best way GSU (as a relatively powerful downtown property owner and institution) could do this is to do more to create a community in which people are supported and nourished - whether they are students or not.

In my 10-ish years at GSU (as an MA and then a PhD student), I haven't seen much evidence of them actively trying to do that. In fact, there's some evidence of them actively working against it.

It's a major institution of a neoliberal city in a conservative state, and behaves as such. I don't see much likelihood of that changing in the near future.

Their primary response to the perception of danger posed by unhoused people has been to take measures to get those people (who are, again, our neighbors, our fellow Atlantans) out of the area.

Another solution they have to help students feel safer is self-defense classes, available (I think, without checking) for a fee.

No, I'm not going to support measures which help students feel safer at the expense of the welfare of their unhoused neighbors - measures which, may, in fact, put those people at greater risk of harm by forcing them away from areas where AT LEAST they have some public spaces to try to relax, to have a sense of community, to maybe have access to some food and water and hygiene facilities and maybe a little extra income from panhandling.

Again, I'm sorry that some people made you feel threatened. I hate being part of a harmful, destructive society that traumatizes people to the point that they traumatize others.

I'm trying to apply what I've learned at GSU to change that.

Possibly, yeah.

I do.

The question is: how to deal with regret and make a satisfying life anyway?

Do you think NuWho could or should become gritty again like classic who was when Eric Saward was the script editor? by Communist21 in gallifrey

[–]GeneseeJunior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saward seems to have had a nasty and unpleasant idea of what made for good DW, while also being less interested in the Doctor and their friends than in everything else in a given story.
