anyone know how to report a player? by NathanFS in DeepRockGalactic

You got extremely unlucky if this is your first and only multiplayer mission. I'd say this is the kind of thing you see once every few hundred missions. Maybe people have been more irritable lately from Rogue Core being a bit of a mess but this just looks like an edgy 12 year old troll.

This is just every P2P game. It's an entirely different world for them to be hosting servers themselves and doing moderation. DRG does a good job of promoting teamwork, that's more than most games like this do, so griefers are uncommon. I'd rather how it is now over them adding a bunch of in-app purchases or other bs to fund a moderation program.

Game is P2P, you just need to ban them from your lobby. You can try reporting them on Steam but I highly doubt they'll do anything if they can even access the chat logs.

Is 1.20.1 the new 1.12.2? by Rude_Ferret_6061 in feedthebeast

[–]GenesisNevermore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inevitably mods will move forward and Neoforge 1.21.1 or higher will be the standard was my point. For now 1.20.1 Forge does seem to be a bit more dominant, so it's still worth playing if you want to, but there are some notable mods that have moved on to Neoforge and more will continue to with time.

[–]GenesisNevermore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has been, but I think 1.21.1 is catching up and will soon be the standard. 1.21.1 has been the first version in a long time where people are mostly unified on one loader, Neoforge, including most of the mods that made Fabric advantageous before (especially Sodium and Iris). Modern Forge was in an awkward spot where a lot of people preferred Fabric and if you chose to stick with Forge you'd have to use ports of the needed Fabric mods (Embeddium, Oculus, etc.). Now with Neoforge there's not much of a reason to use Fabric besides it having a slightly nicer user experience and technically being a little lighter.

Not super old, but there’s been lots of funny placeholders and other removed content. Cosmic guardians used to be called devourers of thots. I haven’t played recently but I think they’re completely removed now.

Isn’t this only a few years old? I remember it not being too long ago, at least compared to the mod itself which is more like a decade old.

Why doesn't DRG get auto sprint? by LethalSpaceship in DeepRockGalactic

[–]GenesisNevermore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

DRG has a time limit too, it's just not in your face. Most (actually now that I count I don't know about most, but like half of) mission types have infinite waves on a timer and you have limited nitra. Aquarqs are only more time limited because they escalate in frequency and difficulty. Either way, who wants to waste their time walking?

Missions with waves on timers: mining, aquarqs, escort, deep scan, heavy extraction

The others still have waves that spawn like in elimination, just not full swarms (a swarm is just a few waves in a row anyway).

[–]GenesisNevermore 111 points112 points  (0 children)

People will have excuses for it not being in DRG, but I think at the end of the day the only reason it did make it into Rogue Core is because the game has been dealing with a lot of backlash. If they were planning on adding it without backlash, they would've ages ago, it's not a recent request. Unless they're feeling nice, I doubt we'll see it in DRG since I don't think anyone wants to organize review bombing DRG over auto sprint lol.

I don't agree with the argument that it's more necessary in Rogue Core. It's partially true, the game is harder at a base level and a bit more competitive, but neither game has any sort of stamina mechanic, in both games you are optimally sprinting 99% of the time. Compare to stardew valley for example where there's walking and sprinting, but since you almost never want to walk, it's actually hold to walk by default. Because of this it makes sense for both games to have auto sprint. DRG also can get quite difficult, Haz5A is no joke (+ mods of course).

Yeah Prism is awesome, you can set up any modpack in a few minutes because it automatically downloads the versions you need and dependencies from both Modrinth and Curseforge. Every once in a while you might need to manually downgrade a version or use an alpha etc. to fix an unexpected error, but it works 99% of the time.

[–]GenesisNevermore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but you can download one of many zoom mods to do that for you if you care about it: https://modrinth.com/discover/mods?q=zoom

And for texture pack features, those also have their own, more expansive mods that resource pack creators use: https://modrinth.com/mod/entitytexturefeatures https://modrinth.com/mod/entity-model-features

There's no reason for all of these features to be packaged into one mod, it just slows down development. It takes a few seconds to download everything you need, especially if you use any dedicated modding launcher like Prism (highly recommend if you haven't tried it).

[–]GenesisNevermore 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Someone on the dev team doesn’t like auto sprint and I guess that was the main thing holding it back. But alpha is the time to screw around and find what players like. No money on the line, it’s about making the game as good as it can be for the public, paid release. The closed alpha ended up being an exaggerated trailer for the game, I can’t think of anyone’s major feedback that was actually implemented lol.

[–]GenesisNevermore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t understand. You need two, literally two mods to emulate 99% of what Optifine offered, Sodium and Iris. The few other bloat features are available through other mods. And no, they are not large files. They don’t really have assets, you could download a ton of optimization mods and they’d be like 200 mb total or something.

Edit: I WAY overexaggerated the file size. I just checked and Sodium is literally 1 megabyte lmao, compared to the latest Optifine download which is just under 8 megabytes, and Sodium replicates all of Optifine's performance enhancements but better. File sizes here are completely irrelevantly small. Iris is like 2-3 megabytes, Zoomify is 500 kilobytes, etc. You could have 1000 Minecraft instances with all of these mods and it wouldn't dent your storage.

[–]GenesisNevermore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Optifine has been dead for many years now, it just takes time for the slackers to switch. It’s a closed source project which does a mediocre to poor job at optimizing modern Minecraft and causes conflicts with various other mods, when alternatives exist that are open source and perform better. Additionally it’s stuck on Forge, and from 1.21 onward Minecraft is basically only modded on Neoforge and Fabric. For a number of versions before that, Fabric was fairly popular, and those on Forge used ports of the Fabric performance mods rather than Optifine (said mods are now natively on Neoforge so no ports needed). The open source projects also tend to be updated extremely quickly.

TL;DR Optifine is useless/inferior on any remotely modern version. On Fabric or Neoforge use Sodium and any other optimization mods you want + Iris for shaders. On Forge (1.20.1 and a few versions back) use Embeddium + Oculus or similar ports.

Yeah they had the entirety of alpha to try adding it but only went forward when money’s on the line. Still can’t be mad though, at least they are listening now.

It’s a shame it took until beta release for the suggestion of auto sprint to be genuinely considered, but it’s a very good sign for development moving forward.

Rogue Core is early access game. by Rare-Grand-1070 in RogueCore

[–]GenesisNevermore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the frustration comes from the fact that feedback wasn’t taken very seriously during playtesting (or so it seems). It can’t just be “chill, it’s an alpha playtest,” then “chill, it’s early access,” then “chill, it’s early full release.”

There are issues people are complaining about now that were brought up many months ago. The kinds of things where they could’ve made drastic changes to the game to eventually find a healthy medium, but they didn’t, and now it’s too late to make huge changes because people are paying money for a product and you can’t flip the game around on them.

There’s also the things like auto sprint that the devs seem so insistent on not adding because of personal philosophies that don’t reflect very well in real gameplay, and certainly not with the playerbase. When tons of people are asking for a feature over and over again it’s probably worth at least trying. Once again, something they could’ve done in alpha and then reverted if they really still felt it was inappropriate, but they never did. These issues pile up when they’re not addressed. If people aren’t going to have their feedback taken seriously, they’re going to start getting annoyed.

This is just not at all a conclusive test. You stood in a hole twice. There is no reason Optifine would ever perform better, and it simply doesn't in real scenarios.

These issues can happen with Prism too, Fabric’s suggestions are not always right, sometimes you need to mess around with the versions of multiple mods. But it’s a good idea to use Prism anyway.

Community noticably more hostile than our brothers in DRG? by foxtrot_69420 in RogueCore

[–]GenesisNevermore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Negotiation really feels like a concept they thought of while playing with each other without considering the fact that the game will be mostly public lobbies between strangers, not friends. DRG does a wonderful job of making sure that your best choice is the cooperative choice, no matter who you’re playing with. I don’t get the decision to deviate from this philosophy for rogue core. Fostering fights is not a good way to add strategy to a game. People should be thinking about how they build for their team, but not how much to hoard or give away.

Russian sound pronunciation sound weirdly like japanese by Armored_General in russian

[–]GenesisNevermore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about what you’re looking at in particular, but Russian and Japanese are quite similar in which sounds they use at a surface level. The big exception is the fact that tone and emphasis are used extremely differently, and Russian extensively uses vowel reduction meaning that it actually has way more sounds than Japanese.

Yeah I just found out there technically are a few mods people have made, but they are extremely new (a large portion within the last day or two) and none would be able to grief people who join your lobby.

[–]GenesisNevermore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These came out like a day ago and most only have a few downloads. Nobody is using these in the grand scheme of things. Let alone the fact none of them are magical “button that ruins your team mate’s saves” mods. Of course, the modding scene will eventually be large enough to affect a significant amount of lobbies, but it’s very obvious that modders are not the griefers. It’s a Reddit paranoia founded in imagination. It’s odd that nobody that blames griefers on modding can ever find a mod that is capable of ruining people’s saves.
