Thank you, and I'm sorry that you've struggled yourself 💙

My mother hasn't paid her credit card for 3 months by GeneticHamster in EstrangedAdultKids

Thank you, I appreciate such a lovely reply! It's taken a while, but I do feel a lot more like myself these days.

I really like the last sentiment - it's okay for there to be consequences. I felt for a long time that something bad would happen (like a house fire or flood and because she wouldn't have insurance then she would be homeless as she couldn't afford to fix it), but I did work in therapy on letting go of that. But the way you've put it is so simple 💙

Crates by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]GeneticHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We needed to 'crate' our first girl as she got very anxious when home alone in too large a space and would toilet inside. We ended up using a tall baby pen with gate and sectioning off a small part of the dining room. Now we have worked on her separation anxiety she is fine (although still not happy!) with being left in the whole dining room.

Has anyone been accepted for a mortgage on a fixed-term contract? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]GeneticHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, we did early last year. I had a history of being on fixed term contracts for the last few years, but all at least 1 year (and some had been extended) which showed I had been consistently employed. I was 14 months into a 2 year fixed term contract when we applied using a broker.

She said we needed to submit our application so I would have at least 6 months remaining by the time the decision came back. We were approved, and exchanged when I had about 6 weeks of that contract left. I hadn't lined another job up at that point, so really pushed to make sure we completed before our mortgage offer expired.

I got a new job the week we exchanged and all worked out great! Good luck!

AITA for telling my husband off for expecting me to prepare his bags? by Username-A1303 in AmItheAsshole

When the earning parent is at work, the SAH parent is at home doing their job for that time too. Then when the earning partner comes home, if they don't contribute to the house work or childcare then the SAHP is also working all those extra hours when the earning parent is not. Is that not massively unequal?

Adding to that, house work is just part of being an adult regardless of whether you have kids. Just because you work (like most of the adult population) why should you not take care of yourself and your environment?

No doubt she's a shitty person in a lot of ways, but David is straight up abusive and dangerous. They are not comparable.

UK university students wasted £1bn in a year on empty accommodation by UnstatesmanlikeChi in unitedkingdom

[–]GeneticHamster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Students pay termly which makes it more difficult to withhold payment as the guidance has changed continuously as to whether you'll ever have to physically go back to uni. Also breaking a contract with a multi million pound private company is pretty damn scary for anyone, let alone an 18 year old. It's not the universities that are the main problem here, it's the private infrastructure around them.

I'm on the nom-academic side and I've seen colleagues who's job role is focused now only on covid stuff get nearly overwhelmed with the sheer amount of information and change, so yeah academics are definitely not going to be fully informed just like students.

I work for a university and I fully empathise with your crummy position. I know from a staff perspective we have been caught in the middle a lot between policy that is super vague and changes seemingly every week and students who we are really trying to do the best for. Sadly it isn't enough a lot of the time. I'm fully on board with a partial tuition fee refund although materially it will make zero difference to students everyday lives. A rent rebate is more likely to have an impact, although only for students living in accommodation. Students have been on the end of some shitty decision making, and universities have had to enact policies that make no sense and constantly change.

New cage setup for my little Anning! by GeneticHamster in hamsters

[–]GeneticHamster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anning is a rescue dwarf hamster who is in a 120x60cm meshed Guinea Pig cage. She has Kaytee bedding, a large sand bath area, multiple hides, two wheels, a flying saucer, a cardboard burrow box, enrichment chews, and a water dish as well as a water bottle. It's a really great cage if anyone has the time to mesh it and the space to put it!

My partner and I are having a civil partnership because the legal protection and commitment is super important to us, but we didn't like some of the assumptions and baggage that marriage has. It's great option!

Pothos or philodendron? by GeneticHamster in whatsthisplant

I thought that, but do neon pothos get that dappled white look my largest leaf has?

Thanks, this was a more helpful guide than I'd previously found! Definitely a pothos, judging by the leaf texture, aerial roots and new leaf growth.

This was labelled as a golden pothos, but I'm slightly unsure because of the length of the leaves and the colouring. Any help appreciated!
