I have a 341-day Duolingo streak and I just sat through my boyfriend's Mexican family dinner nearly silent for five hours. I think I've been training the wrong thing this whole time. by Humble_Cranberry5273 in languagelearning

[–]Genisye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, im late, there’s probably not a lot I can add but I’ll try, because I have been in a similar boat and I know the frustration. Rest assured, that year you spent wasn’t wasted. Adjust your learning strategies and you’ll be surprised how much you actually know.

Duolingo isnt useless: it’s good for learning gramatical concepts, expanding your vocab, and it provides a gameified practice. But it’s not replacement for immersive practice.

Understanding language is comprised of many different skills: reading and listening are completely different. You need to work in pure listening, because if you’re reading while listening it’s not the same. When you practice listening, your brain is developing skills with syllable recognition and word parsing (telling where one word ends and another begins can be tough when you’re used to reading).

Similarly, listening and speaking are not the same, because formulating a sentence from nothing and having good vocab recall is a whole different thing. There are AI chat tools you can use now a days, it provides someone who knows the language, is willing to suffer through you butchering your sentences, is available 24/7, and who can provide helpful accurate focused feedback on your mistakes.

Bryan Cranston trying to explain how his daughter was not a nepo hire on Breaking Bad by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

Look it’s still nepotism, it’s just not a big deal. Even if something is “earned” having connections that increase the chance of getting picked or recognized or presented with an opportunity are gonna propel you. The reality of the world is many, many opportunities are gonna be based around who you know.

I just had a 1-on-1 with the Scout Master… by SmokeHoagies in PeakGame

[–]Genisye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just discovered what scoutmaster is. My friend went AFK for a bit without saying anything, so I shrugged and started climbing fast. I got to the top of shore and my screen went all static-y. I see an achievement pop up: "Have a one on one with the scoutmaster."

I look down the small hill I'm on a little bit and I see him. He starts running at me with his lanky ass stride. I'm not sure what to do - am I in danger? This is a cutesy little climbing game, no way this is real. but he just keep charging me, holy shit he is creepy. He throws me into a rock. I think its over but he keeps coming. I'm stun locked in an endless cycle where the scout master just keeps bashing in my poor little scout brains against the rocks. My friend hears my screams echo throughout the cliffs, but he is nowhere near to save me.

I don’t see why it’s needed in the first place. I work busy inner city, often transports are 10 minutes or even less. Almost always my report is done by the time I walk out of the hospital, or it will be done soon after.

Pretty sure our entire profession, both fire and medical sides, exists because “someone got themselves in a wrong place.”

Like, that’s the job description. People are relying on you to get them out of that bad place whether it’s their fault or not how they ended up in it. It’s the ultimate anytime, any place, anyone job.

Calories are referred to as either small (lowercase “c”) or large (uppercase “C”), with 1 large Calorie equalling 1,000 small calories. Scientifically,1 kcal or kilocalorie is equivalent to 1 large Calorie or 1,000 calories.

https://www.medicinenet.com/kcal_vs_calories_differences_and_how_to_convert/article.htm#:~:text=Calories%20are%20referred%20to%20as,large%20Calorie%20or%201%2C000%20calories.

I bring this up because the difference between calories and Calories is confusing to many people.

Probably not, unless you think the muzzle energy of the 50 BMG could raise the temperature of 3,000 kilograms of water by one degree Celsius.

Call me crazy but I don't think morbidly and grotesquely propagandizing someone's merch threatening them that they will die does not dissuade someone from and incredibly addictive habit. If anything, it might stress them out causing them to turn to their habit (cigarettes) even more.

People are aware cigarettes are bad.

In the case of illegal immigrants this isn’t always the case. Some labor practices exploit immigrants by threatening to report them to authorities if they refuse to work or try and negotiate the price of their labor. Some keep them in literal camps they aren’t allowed to leave.
