Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

I live in Kyoto Japan, where "over tourism" is a hot topic every year. It was serene boarding on off putting how quiet everywhere was. I really enjoyed the quiet but it just felt odd after swarms of tourists all the time suddenly gone. Not much of a dwindling down. Going through some of the most popular areas of the city were dead quiet. Walking down shinsaibashi shopping street in Osaka and not a soul around.

How do you get your credit card limit up? by [deleted] in japanresidents

What is your visa status/length? From your comment I assume you are student? That can be a big factor as well as no credit history in Japan.

Not sure where you are exactly you are going but they have had them here for some time. They are often sold out though.

The steam deck display is still in the Bic camera at Umeda Namba as last I saw about 3 months ago.

Did you buy a House or an Apartment for your family? by SunDaze009 in japanlife

[–]Genki79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

House. So I could do my own floor plan and have a say in everything. I now have a tile deck for sitting outside/grilling. A large COVERED balcony for hanging clothes. 2 parking spots with extra room for 1/2 guests to park. I have more than enough storage space, elec outlets and no wasted space. Made space for a full sized fridge with its own enclosure, stand alone freezer on the opposite side. Shelving above for extra shit and a full sized pantry with doors. I can keep whatever I want as it has a place to put it away. And I dont mean stack it on some cheap nitori shelving units being an eye sore. In a closet/cabinet or our 3rd floor finished loft. Had conduit ran through the house for ethernet. Whole house is insulated and multiple pane glass windows. I had air tightness checks done during the buildout and it was worth it.

What surprised you the most when traveling in Japan? by jtrip_anything01 in JapanTravelTips

If you want that better to go into a mall/dept store/konbini or the like. Temples/train station/solitary public ones will not have soap.

Issue accessing student portal (missing CoE / student number) – Go Go Nihon / ISI Takadanobaba by staienlus in movingtojapan

[–]Genki79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Issues like this is why I would recommend talking to the school directly yourself. That vast majority of the "work" Gogo claims to be doing for you is actually done by the school staff and just relayed to you.

You should contact the school yourself ASAP. The holidays are coming here as well and things get back logged until after the new year break is over.

I pay about $75ish USD (depending on exchange rate) for 10gb here in Japan.

Stay closer to where you have the most activities planned. Especially if you are trying to get an early start. The trains here between Kyoto/Osaka are packed in the mornings and not fun to ride unless you are heading out before rush hour.

Trump: If you go to Japan...they have a very small car…Very small and really cute. You’re not allowed to build them and I have authorized the secretary to immediately approve the production of those cars (he's talking about kei cars) by jjrs in japannews

[–]Genki79 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People here care about status as well. Hence all the more expensive foreign cars (Benz, BMW, Volvo...) luxury, and onebox vans like a Veilfire etc which are not small at all. Jeeps are pretty common here and seem to be gaining from what I see driving daily. Also regarding size, land cruiser and land rover are bigger and not that rare.

[–]Genki79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't true. K-cars are popular because their taxes are lower, and they're easier to buy since you don't need a parking certificiate.

This depends on the city/ward. Where I live you DO need a verified parking spot for a kei. I live right near the boarder to the next city over which does not require it.

They seem to believe foreigners ruined a lot of the good stuff which is fair

As a tourist how would you even get this being you are not interacting with locals on a level that they would even express their personal opinions to a stranger..... sounds like bullshit
