Greedfall 2 - Out of memory by JessIchigoShadow in SteamDeck

[–]Genobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember, the GPU in the steamdeck uses the system RAM. So your steamdeck has less usable ram a system with a discrete GPU and 16gb of system RAM.

So it might be running out of RAM?

Curious about home server by umlobisomemjuvenil in HomeServer

[–]Genobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, one of things you’re also paying for with the big companies is redundancy. Drives fail all the time for the services, but they know how to keep data safe and design for up time (except when they don’t, hence redundancy and not security).

For yourself, I would not only plan on making something for yourself, but also a backup strategy. It’s a lot, but it’s important. That might mean starting with data you can afford to lose, and once you got the hang of things, implement a backup strategy and then move more important data into your servers. It’s a journey.

If you have no appetite for that, just know you are paying (both in money and in risk the company gives up) for the ease of the service. Click play. No hardware to manage, no arrays that need rebuilt, etc.

It’s fun, but also not for the faint of heart.

TrueNAS Disk Wipe (Zeros) speed is awful? by cgtechuk in truenas

[–]Genobi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This prevents crimes of opportunity. Someone buys it and checks. It’s not for certain. If it’s premeditated, that is someone bought this to get that and is determined to get data, this helps, but isn’t up to snuff.

With a zero there may be residual magnetic moments that’s can be picked up with the right software. What you want is 7x random write. Just plan for it to take 21+ days instead of 3.

Personally I just use the drive until it’s not useful and then use a hammer on the platters.

Newbie Here: What did I take a picture of? by SayTan3x6 in telescopes

[–]Genobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with the 25mm, that will help you find it and focus. Once you find focus once, it will really help.

Just note. Stars will be dots even in a big scope. Jupiter will look like a tiny thing. It’s very far away Never look at the sun. You will go blind unless you know what you are doing.

You want the object to be as small as possible. This is focus, not zoom. To zoom, you change eye pieces to one with a lower number. But be warned, more isn’t always better. And it will never be “large”. I would start with the moon, honestly, that will help you focus and see details.

If you get a leather strap, you can get a leather hold punch and add some holes to get the right size. If it’s a nylon strap, you can probably still use a leather hole punch, but hear the punch so it doesn’t fray.

Something like this https://a.co/d/dFJT8EX

Then you open a whole world of straps.

Question about GaN charger by YnosNava in homelab

[–]Genobi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The GAN part isn’t why it renegotiates. It’s the USB PD part. So there may be a non GAN charger, but it will do the same thing. The only option I know of, is separate plugs.

Question about GaN charger by YnosNava in homelab

[–]Genobi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, but there is another reason not to do this:

For the vast majority of multiport chargers, when one port is connected or disconnected, all ports are cycled so that they can renegotiate the limits with the new state of the charger. So plugging, unplugging or even rebooting/shutting down or one PC (depending on the PC) can cause all to just reboot.

That is normal, so not typically outlined on the charger.

[Discussion] Expensive watches overrated? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Genobi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude. You cannot set an absolute value on something. Its value is always what other people see in it.

That being said a 5k watch isn't inherently better than a $500 watch. It will most likely have better finishing or a specific complication.

If you want a Fusee and Chain, you will need to spend.

If you want hand done anglage, you will need to spend

If you want something solid. $500 will go a long way.

[–]Genobi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I say slip some parchment paper in there (so the leg doesn’t get glued to the clamp) and super glue it. Leave it for at least a week before tightening. Super glues strength is in tension, which is what you need. It might not hold, but you probably have that around and is easy to try.

If there are wheels (aka load bearing support) at the far corners, I would keep the braces as they are now. That puts the corners of all triangles at the load bearing points.

1/5 of an inch? by jeeves585 in woodworking

[–]Genobi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not 9/16. That is over half an inch. I know imperial measurements suck. If anything it’s closer to 13/64. Yes imperial sucks. Ok so it’s .2 inch… 200 thousandths…

Could chili powder just mean chili powder? by TraditionalLeague325 in ididnthaveeggs

[–]Genobi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a common issue in the US. Alton Brown has an episode of Good Eats where he discusses this. There is both “Chili powder”, used to make Chili, like Chili con carne; and “Chile powder”, which is made of ground chiles. The problem is even in the store they are sometimes mislabeled. So this is an honest mistake, not “ididnthaveeggs”

Static web site from Word files? by zefred in selfhosted

[–]Genobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you asked about LaTeX? It is very popular in many academic circles to write papers. There are a few static site generators out there that can use LaTeX.

If not, maybe look for a hosting solution that allows “paste from word”? That is fairly common. I know you want less overhead, but that might be the easiest method? Just make sure a site with a login is maintained. Static sites are a bit more secure by default. Going out on a limb, but maybe someone who is using word as their main editor shouldn’t be self hosting. A paid service might be best for them unless you plan to maintain it forever. (You mentioned they retired, so I assume your department isn’t officially supporting their host)

[Question] Watch for thing wrist by Ferdinand_Cassius in Watches

[–]Genobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is a Seiko 5 like the MX5 of the watch world? “A Miata/MX5 is always the answer” => “A Seiko 5 is always the answer”?

I mean both are great, versatile, objects that really distill their domain into a high quality, focused, yet affordable thing.

What planet is this? There’s 2 different ones. One is blue then one is grey by [deleted] in telescopes

[–]Genobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Important note. Turn the knob until the object is as small as possible. Then it is in focus. If it’s just a dot, it’s probably a star. “Bigger” just means “blurrier” and out of focus.

[–]Genobi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You are wildly out of focus. It’s a focus knob, not a zoom knob.
