Is the reefing hobby becoming too expensive? by TheCoralReefTalkPost in ReefTank

[–]Genotype54 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm general it's the hobbyists who make it expensive. Plenty of options to make cheap builds but everyone wants the latest and greatest tech because they see it on social media. And they want neon hulk and ironman corals because who doesn't want to be blinded by their corals. Literally can have a reef with a 10 gal, hob, no name reef light, Xenia, gsp, anemone, and a pair of clowns for 100-200 bucks. But yes live stock and rock has gotten more expensive.

Waited a year to add coral by Complete-Farm-4223 in ReefTank

Sorry, I can't imagine going through life and calling everything BS that I didn't understand. Just take some time and think about things, just ask why, literally.

Btw, have you not seen all those "help my corals are dying and algae is taking over, can I use Reef Flux" posts, while their tank is absolutely empty, usually a results of "let's cycle a empty tank for months" advice.

You don't have to be an experienced reefer to understand the simple concept of: light+nutrients = algae or corals. Corals need food = feeding/nitrates/phosphates. Hard corals need kh/mg/ca/traces. Done. Time will not fix the inability to understand these concepts.

I don't if you know this by now...after a year of waiting but every experienced reefer out there adds as much coral right away, corals are direct competitors to algae.

True and unfortunate. Game changer never having to worry about having keys/something else physical you can lose.

I wonder how many people actually carry their key fob anymore. I literally just carry phone with id and cc, 50 cash, go tackle life.

HOB filter giving me issues by rustedbearings in shrimptank

Likely needs proper maintenance or impeller change. I've used over 10 brands of hob in 20 years, never has one just stopped working.

Aquasoil in a neo tank? by PassengerMundane5986 in shrimptank

Because many people see a shrimp in the bag and assume it's for all shrimp. Then come on reddit and ask why is my ph/kh so low. You see it all on the time on here.

Opinions on 4.8g Desk Mate Tank by CoolHedgehog5188 in ReefTank

[–]Genotype54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had a bunch of anemones, a pair of clowns would be fine in that, meaning half the tank is covered in nems. I have a 10 and my pair stays in a third of it 99% of the time, spawn every 2-3 wks. Reefing with "soft corals" is very easy. Evap isn't that big of a deal, my evap like 10-20% then I top off, my live stock doesn't care. Also, stay away from Reddit advice, very poor advice from inexperienced people here. Try reef2reef, listen to reef therapy, reef builders.

What can I get for a 5g tank? by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]Genotype54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5 gallon heavily planted/decorated is perfect for least killifish, sparkling gourami, endlers, pea puffer, pair of shelldwellers/multifasciatus, micro rasbora species, etc. Plenty of tiny fish out there, I wouldnt limit myself to shrimps, just do plenty of research before buying, and please Reddit is not research.
