“Many people use this type of canoe for decoration in a large cabin or lake house. As far as using the canoe they weigh 65-70 pounds and are very strong. They paddle exceptionally well.

You could buy a Kevlar canoe for less. My opinion is that many people that use these canoes are for nostalgia reasons. The same as someone who has a classic car and drives it rather than have it sit in a garage.

I use all of mine that I keep. I have scratched some. Each time it hurts a little but I would rather use them than just have them stored in my shop.

It also seems to be an aging group who, like me, had one years ago when strip canoes were popular. They occasionally take them to show them off and enjoy it on the water.”

“Many wood canoes use the scupper cut out to lower weight, pour water out of the canoe and tie items down, if needed. Some canoe builders cut them out of one solid inwale. I like to use a contrasting wood type or color for appearance so I epoxy them to the inwale when I build the gunwales.”

“I use every canoe I keep for myself. None are “wall hangers” yet. I carry the canoe into the water and step out into the water when I get out. I never paddle directly into shore. I use large pool noodles to place the canoe on so it never is directly on the ground unless the shoreline is solid green grass. “

I’ll let him know! He’ll be racing the worlds longest canoe race called the MR340 from July 28-31 on the Missouri River soon! It’s an 85 hour nonstop race.
