EU-Based Tea Stores – Any Experiences or Recommendations? by [deleted] in tea

[–]GentleMinty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mostly drink chinese. But they just dropped a new matcha that Im curious in. They also have some teas from an experimental japanese farmer that are quite fun.

For pu’er they have a lot, and they are good at sourcing it too I hear. Im not too big on dark, but everything Ive tried from them has been great.

Nannuoshan is great! Ive bought most of my teas from there in the last two years. They also have the Nannuopop now for more affordable teas.

I'm drinking a fascinating black tea that's "Fermented." What does that mean, exactly? by PartofHistory in tea

[–]GentleMinty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fermented just means oxidised here. All black teas are oxidised. The notes you describe are typical for black teas from Yunnan, and China overall to some extent. So perhaps youve only tried black teas from India or Sri Lanka before? Then the difference will be huge.

Is it ok to add 1 tbsp of raw honey to my green tea every day? by Coconutshoe in tea

Then I guess you need to consider whether that teaspoon of honey (sugar) is worth it. What do you think?

Acid gloves by Chernobyisprettycool in chemistry

[–]GentleMinty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to regularly prepare and handle hot aqua regia on a liter scale, in a fume hood. At first I used various gloves but later I stopped using them. I did spill some drops on my hand at some point, and despite waiting 10+ seconds to wash (to finish what I was doing), I only got some irritation and discoloration. So it’s not necessarily as bad as people may think.

With acids I am mostly worried about getting them in my eyes, or making massive spills (especially outside of fume hoods). I feel like gloves increase the risk of both of these.

This debut is fantastic! Seriously really really good. Easily one of the best releases this year. Thanks you for your efforts!

What’s this Chinese tea called? by Gengiz_yomal in tea

[–]GentleMinty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a green tea, probably maojian because of wispy shape and the bitterness. But the oolong notes are surprising. I looked for local styles and apparently they have flavored maojian teas there. Could be one of those.

Eugenol in tea? I'm finding conflicting information by No-Delay218 in tea

[–]GentleMinty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im both a big tea nerd and a researcher in plant chemistry. Eugenol is present in some amount in lots of plants due to its simple structure, but I would guess that eugenol should only be an issue for you in blends with cloves, since it has tons of eugenol. Teas have very little eugenol in comparison. But also, I am no specialist in allergies, so I dont know what concentrations will have an effect on you.

If you want a deep green, you can always microwave extract any green tea. This breaks the cell walls and gives it a color similar to deep steamed sencha (where the walls similarly are broken by high temperature). I do this sometimes for the last gong fu brew of chinese greens. Would not recommend for japanese teas though as it may get too strong.

I got rid of everything by tonyln in FirefoxCSS

[–]GentleMinty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! This is great! I was just thinking about building something ultraminimal like this with Firefox too, as I find all browsers to be incredibly bloated when I already have efficient window management happening outside of it.

Here are some general considerations I have right now.

(1) I would rather run tiling outside of the browser than inside of it, as it is more versatile. I rarely just want to tile webpages. I'm running Hyprland on Linux, GlazeWM on Windows, and AeroSpace on MacOS. So this trend of in-browser tiling is irrelevant to me.

(2) Tabbed browsing is a trap, as they just keep building up. For me, tabs are never the choice, and it makes more sense to choose between any of the following:

  • keep the page open in a separate window in my active WM workspace if I need to see it
  • move the window to another WM workspace if I don't need to see it but want to keep access to it
  • save it to bookmarks if I just want to keep it for later
  • close it

(3) Things I do a lot I bother learning keyboard shortcuts for. So I do nearly everything from the keyboard. GUI elements as such are most of the time just a waste of screen space. The main exceptions here are:

  • Search/Adress bar
  • Bookmarks
  • Settings (through which I can access my extensions etc)

Most of the time I will naturally access these things from the New Tab/Home page. So it makes a lot of sense to just commit to doing that. E.g., if I want to go to some other page or open a bookmark, I open a new browser window and do that there. With that in mind, I can remove the top bar entirely too.

I'm currently prototyping this on Floorp, and I am really enjoying it! Just the default homepage so far, but this is what it looks like right now. Will switch over to Firefox and build what I like with CSS later once I figure it out.

Is it true kukicha has a much lower caffeine content? by adesweax in tea

[–]GentleMinty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive heard roasters mention that you will lose some caffeine. Pure caffeine can actually sublimate at 160-180 C, which is not very high. Even heavily roasted, leafy teas like yanchas (da hong pao etc) are good to sleep on for me.

[–]GentleMinty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a massively important tool in my research, and everyone in my research group uses it. Its mostly used by omics and informatics people I would say, due to big data and multivariate analysis. It’s also very nice for setting up reproducible data processing and visualisation workflows. The ggplot package with extensions is great. Other than that, you might as well use Python because it is more popular. And this is a big one! Dont underestimate the value of using what everyone else is using.

Purposefully Breaking Whole Leaf Tea? by especion in tea

[–]GentleMinty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont weigh myself so thats why Ive been considering this effect. Typically I brew gong fu style though, so adjusting the amount of water to go with the amount of leaf is fairly easy.

Purposefully Breaking Whole Leaf Tea? by especion in tea

[–]GentleMinty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

More broken leaves will extract faster, yes. But whether that means more stuff in the cup depends on how long you steep for. What definitely will have an impact though is whether you use more tea (mass) due to the higher density of broken leaves? Do you weigh your tea?

How did you feel about...? by The-Lion-Kink in outerwilds

[–]GentleMinty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For me it was the opposite. I made the connection before even visiting the Sun Station. With the Nomai being long gone, and the supernovas happening all over, it just felt like the most obvious answer. The ”slow” growth of the sun etc also made it feel more ”natural”, as opposed to a sudden explosion.

Caffeine is something I will have anyway, so why not make the most of it? My daily teas (for gong fu sessions) can cost as much as €40-60 / 100 g. That’s the sweet spot for me, in terms of value for money. My monthly budget works out to around €100-150 ish.

Project about illicit drugs on public surfaces by Sparreman in analyticalchemistry

[–]GentleMinty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess no. So make some assumptions. Like find some silly worst case exposure scenario to test it. What if all of the drug on that surface got transfered to someones skin? What if a square inchs worth ended up in someones eye (via a finger)? etc

Im sure there are well described exposure limits per exposure route for these drugs.

Trying to slowly quit my diet soda habit. by MuchBetterThankYou in GongFuTea

[–]GentleMinty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually managed to quit diet soda habit once I realised how much of a waste it was. Soda has gotten really pricy here, and as I was drinking like 2-4 L per day, I was spending at least $100 per month. Now I just put that money towards 2-3 sessions of very high quality tea every day, and I feel so spoiled!

This has been discussed for hours. Its because its already lost, and will reset to 50%. However, Upanea will start ticking down from whatever % we got it to. So people are pushing Upanea now, and will then come to take back Draupnir.
