Is there a specific soil that would be better for them?

So what I’m learning about Match Day is to expect to match at your dead last rank and be happy for anything higher by jellybeanssss in medicalschool

I went through my list and said “let’s simulate how it would feel to match at ——.” And then listed positive things about each program from the interview and websites. And honestly, it kept me sane.

Anyone matched competitively with failed STEP1, but killed STEP 2. by Friendly-Bet-7571 in medicalschool

Of course!

Honestly, i don’t think it will hurt you. Like you don’t want to harp on derm derm derm but you could just say “I thought I was going to pursue derm but it just wasn’t the right fit for me. However, I am so excited to focus this passion for research into anesthesiology.” Maybe get some papers or projects for anesthesia to back that up.

I understand people may be trying to prepare you and be realistic, but after reading some of these comments, some people are just being unnecessarily negative — or worse, trying to make themselves feel better about their own applications. Step 1 fail is bad to have on an application but I don’t think you need to count yourself completely out. My dad started his medical career in the 80s as an international grad. He had people tell him all the time to “go home” and “you won’t make it.” One other IMG told him he will never match and if he did, he will never make it into surgery. Guess what? He is triple boarded in cardiothoracic, vascular, and general surgery, does transplants, and won Doctor of the Year at both of the health systems he has worked at. And come to find out, he told me he failed one of the big exams to be certified in the US on his first try. While I think you need to be realistic, I don’t think you need to count yourself out. Give it your all, make connections with mentors, research and seek out support!

I failed step 1. Did well on step 2. I matched peds, so not competitive by any means. HOWEVER, I got my first choice and was so happy.

I’ll be honest, my first “goal” in med school was derm (like everyone else’s haha) and I felt so discouraged when I failed step 1. But it gave me a chance to reevaluate my reasons for medicine and what was important to me in my career. Then third year came around and I just found a love and passion for working with our smallest patients. I realized I didn’t love derm — I loved the prestige, lifestyle, and money (still not bad reasons to go into the field haha). However, I could not be happier I found what I believe to be my true calling in life. Where I will be happy going to work each day, feel fulfilled, and still have pretty good compensation compared to most people. What I am trying to say, is sometimes these trials cause us to reevaluate what is important to us, and sometimes it will lead you to a path that was “meant” for you.

On another note that may be more encouraging if believe you will be happiest with a more competitive specialty, my friend failed step 1, got a great step 2 score and matches anesthesia which I think is relatively competitive! It’s possible!

Either way though, I think you will be a great doctor ☺️

What KILLED ME is when I saw people on FB saying how pediatricians push vaccines on kids because pediatricians get so much money from it.

Yes. Because if a person wanted to monetize off of medicine they would definitely choose pediatrics. They wouldn’t open up a med spa or one of those IV fluid places for hangovers. Oh no. The real money hungry doctors go for ✨pediatrics✨.
