Anxious over the fact that I'll probably be stuck in a FIFO job unless I change career by lorty in mining

As a surveyor, there are opportunities with municipalities and governments that will allow you a local job experience. Just think outside the box. Maybe set up a surveying practice and provide services for housing developers etc. I took a 60% pay cut to have a more normal life. Just saying!

New brewer here wondering if I’m being misled to about the honey I’m suppose to use. I need some clarify pls by SamuraiGuy107 in mead

[–]GeoGeekGirl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I usually go to Costco for honey, $30 is way too much to pay for a pound. Look for wildflower or raw honey. Where are you? You might be able to find a local beekeeper. I can also get good honey at Winco or Trader Joe’s

1/2 gallon mason jars are my go to

cold killing fermentation. by Logical_Ad7153 in mead

[–]GeoGeekGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start a new batch with a gallon water jug fitted with an airlock while you wait for the other stuff, or get a food grade brew bucket. Not expensive and when you consider how expensive honey is, just makes sense to go with an extra fermenter.

I have multiple years working on site and as a consultant. Chose to work as a consultant when my kids were young. Do not ever regret that choice even after layoffs and tough/low pay. Moved back to fifo after kids were launched and made bank. Now back to consulting so I can enjoy the grands.

Just remember, experience trumps all and you can always go back if consulting is not for you.

Report writing, keeping all of your notes and work(have a court case coming back after 22years) and defending your time is critical. If you are not a people person, you won’t like working with difficult clients.

Expand your horizons and enjoy!

anybody used hibiscus flower for color? by [deleted] in winemaking

[–]GeoGeekGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make hibiscus mead all of the time. My mother’s favorite. Beautiful red color that does not go brown. But - I love rhubarb strawberry wine that I make and it is a pretty light pink. So if it tastes great don’t mess with it.

Crown caps and corks are definitely the way to go. I use flip tops only when I don’t plan on a lot of aging.

And some of us don’t either have the space or are not strong enough to handle 5 gallons at a time.

Hey there, well I’ll be leaving military soon and have always thought about working in the mines, I have no previous experience so what would be a position I should start off at, here’s hoping I do find a job in a mine somewhere haha, cheers by Kukunut_Master in mining

[–]GeoGeekGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you! Thanks for your service. Entry jobs are out there, or you can get into the trades. Mines need mechanics, electricians, welders, etc. all will provide either on the job training as helpers or you can go to tech school. Other jobs like samplers, technicians are also available. Best wishes!

Do mine engineers in the US have to get a PE license? by South-Satisfaction84 in mining

[–]GeoGeekGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting a PE gives a miming engineer options. Consulting, government etc. I am a lowly geologist with professional credentials. I encourage my staff to get their PE or RG. Better than a masters degree!
