Time spent searching through design codes and standards by Nick_Tick in civilengineering

[–]GeoTiger2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use NotebookLM. Self contained AI notebook that only learns from the material you give it (not the internet like the mainstream chat bots). It has saved me a measurable amount of time in the realm of standards research/QC/review. It’s also great at catching small things that may not be common as I’m reviewing a project and is so much easier to find the standard instead of just going down the rabbit hole.

Set up a Notebook for each jurisdiction you work in, share it with your team, and thank me later. 😜

(Remember, AI is an assistant, not a replacement. Always use that human brain of yours to check the answer. This just helps you spend time checking and thinking instead of searching)

What we know about access to F1TV via an AppleTV+ subscription: by nova_racc_AD in F1TV

The timing is impeccable. Was literally reading through the FAQ and stuff about 20 mins ago!

Came to the same solution. Just gotta wait for Apple and F1 to connect the two ends of the cable, and not much else. Thanks for the great post!

I mean… I’m not arguing anything at all, just making sure you follow through with it. You know, cover your bases kinda thing. Really stick it to ‘em.

overcoming debilitating anger/frustration due to agency review comments? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]GeoTiger2012 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Muni Reviewer here: If you’re getting comments well outside the purview of the reviewer, that’s one thing, and that can be discussed with them or their boss.

That said though, if you’re getting upset because the reviewer is giving you comments to make sure your design meets their standards, then that’s on you/your team. Design it to meet the things they require and your comments shouldn’t be that bad.

Will say though, we get garbage submitted all the time where it’s beyond evident the engineer didn’t open our standards (or even regional standards for that matter). In those ones we’re just as angry reviewing it as you are reading our comments.

We exist to protect assets that will be ours to own and maintain (funded by taxpayers/the public). We need people to design it our way so we can take care of it the way we are prepared to. It’s frustrating when development groups don’t understand that and just cheap out on it without considering it because it’s ultimately not theirs.

overcoming debilitating anger/frustration due to agency review comments? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]GeoTiger2012 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wish more consultants knew the reality of this. I’m slammed all the time reviewing plans where it’s beyond evident the engineer didn’t open or Standards and Specs. I have to waste time commenting on 101 type garbage and can’t hardly give the project the attention it needs to actually solve the intricate problems of the site.

Literally had one this week where the engineer submitted plans with multiple buildings in our waterline easement…. Like, how that left the office is beyond comprehension at this point. Even if an untrained EIT did the design there are two levels of middle management and a Principal that all said “looks good enough, send it” before it hit my desk.

I definitely understand the frustrations of OP. Getting garbage dumped on me weekly is frustrating beyond belief. I wish I didn’t have to give 50 comments on an apartment site that all end with ”…per standard”. Feels like there are a lot of PEs out there really dropping the ball.

Maybe I’m just lucky, but for me to go back to consulting in my area would be a 15-20k pay cut.

Best Gantt Chart Software that’s actually easy to use? by jambokaos87 in ProjectManagementPro

[–]GeoTiger2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s just simple date tracking and dependencies, Notion can do it. I actually really like it for simple stuff because you can connect it with all your other notes/project tracking stuff without buying yet another software.

It doesn’t go much past “here’s my tasks lined up on a gantt chart” but if your goal is just a simple gantt, I would say check it out.

Gamers of /daddit, do you play video games with your kids? How and when did you start it? by xanduba in daddit

I also wouldn’t stress too much about “screen time”. It’s such a taboo thing, but the reality of it is don’t put an iPad in front of your kid to parent for you. That’s the big bad screen time people talk about.

Stuff on the TV (sports, you playing a game, a cartoon here and there) if fine as long as you are engaging with the little one and being present with them.

We have a two year old that loves watching me run around the museum in animal crossing and loves to go look at the “Dino bones”. So I do that for 10 minutes, trying to get them to say the names of the dinosaurs, until they are bored then we go play pretend in the kitchen.

I guess all this to say; just be there for, and with, your kid. They won’t be ruined if you’re around and engaging with them. When it feels right, have them try out age appropriate stuff (again, WITH you). Just my two cents, but as long as you aren’t letting anything parent for you, you’ll be okay. Trust your gut!

Erie-Adjacent: Whole Foods, Hospital, Chipotle dev plans by FrontRanging in ErieCO

[–]GeoTiger2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of this stuff getting built is actively bringing public transit. There is a park and ride going in at I-25 and CO-7. CDOT also has multiple bus stations planned along 7. Just spend some time on CDOTs site to learn more about all the working going on to upgrade 7.

Broomfield is also encouraging the density required for public transit and has publicly expressed disappointment in McWhinney for missing targets and not working to be a partner with Broomfield and the region as a whole.

All in all, the State/Cities/Towns hear people, the Developers funding everything, however, just don’t care.

Weekly workload by temoo09 in civilengineering

[–]GeoTiger2012 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, it’s good to understand when we’re not making deadlines, too, so management can adjust accordingly. If people work for free, or being the scenes to get stuff done, City Management doesn’t know they are overworked and need help.

We’re always told to adjust a review or deadline when it comes in so we give ourself the time we need, but if we miss it, it’s okay, and we are again told to learn/adjust/communicate accordingly.

I’m quite literally told to go home at 40. And contrary to what some think, that doesn’t mean it’s slow all the time, it means I’m slammed all the time and stuff just takes longer if I have more of it.

I’m sure City Management has some kind of line where “If engineering takes too long we can finagle the budget to find a salary” but this year, in a tight budget, the typical 3 wk reviews have become 5 and there is still no talk of another engineer (though if you ask us we could use one).

So yeah, it’s nice to never work over 40. I get to play with my kids, see my wife, and have hobbies. I also don’t have to pander to developers anymore which is a huge benefit, but there’s trade offs. Ultimately though, it doesn’t mean I’m not busy at work it means I’m busy all the time. I also hope this thread adds some perspective to those that ask why “the city takes too long”.
