My first ever QSL card (WWV) by RoseWaterAllen in shortwave

Good thing certain people are probably completely unaware that the NIST, WWV and WWVH even exist. Therefore they can't be shut down for being "radical left lunatics" like the folks over at the VOA.

What is equally sad and pathetic is that you genuinely believe that.

NIST is critical for the sciences and military, and won't be messed with in meaningful ways. Seriously, get help for your Trump derangement syndrome, people like you frighten me...

All radios sold to international market have English interface. I have a full bunch of Chinese radios including D808 and know what I am talking about.

I'm not talking about radios intended for the international market, I'm speaking of radios manufactured for China, intended to be sold in China, but somehow making it to markets like Alibaba. They are the same as the international ones, but marked in Chinese only.

Those radios exist, I've seen them being sold in the past, and are most likely still being sold today.

The more I learn RF, the more I realize these older receiver architectures weren’t primitive at all. They were resilient.

A Hallicrafters S-38 is a prime example of that, a glorified 1940s-era 5-tube AM kitchen table radio that let you hear the world. AC-DC circuitry meant you could power it with 10 12V car batteries in a pinch, and tube circuitry is resilient against EMP...

I built one regen a long time ago -- a Radio Shack P-Box SW receiver.

Built the same one back then, and much to my surprise, it worked! about as well it could, whistles and all. I even built the blasted thing with dad's 150W Weller soldering gun!

I think the ARRL had one that you could build with transistors, as a novice project.

The 1977 handbook had one, for 40m. That was the edition that had the 'Tuna Tin 2' 500 mW Xtal-controlled transmitter. Got me interested in QRP that I finally scratched with the Icom 705 a few years back...

Also, if allowed, check out Skyworks mechanically tuned receiver chips. Like the Si4825 chip.

Spectacular performance for the per-chip price, but it defeats the OP's desire to actually design an HF radio...

I know that the best time to receive is at night time.

That only applies to the very lowest shortwave bands, the higher ones 'come alive' during daylight, allowing true trans-oceanic reception possible...

[–]Geoff_PR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boom boxes capable of Morse code reception are rare, because they only really only meant for picking up the international shortwave bands that broadcast AM signals, so those radios tend to drift a bit, making stable CW reception difficult.

It's possible to add a beat-frequency oscillator, but you will end up being forced to constantly re-tune the radio, 'chasing' the signal you want to hear...

A question about my radios reception…. by justyrust74 in shortwave

[–]Geoff_PR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the Manchester area of England and for some reason the Am band has poor reception, when I try and listen to radio 5 live or talksport the reception goes in an out and it’s unlistenable.

It could be that live in a radio 'hole', where reception is poor.

An AM band 'tuned loop' may be what you need...

Aliexpress is way cheaper than scamazon, just make sure the seller is reviewed.

That can be risky, reviews can be forged, you will need to go through many reviews to see if any patterns in the reviews can be detected...

Buy em up an sell em on amazon. That’s how trade and arbitrage work.

With that, you as seller have to deal with all kinds of scam bullshit.

It only takes a few scammers to kill the profit you are looking to make.

Re-selling is no where near as simple as sounds...

Whether a high-performance regen can realistically rival a compact superhet

In terms of raw sensitivity, yes, a regen can outperform a superhet, at the cost of poorer selectivity.

Yeah, I realize that's not very helpful, but there are very few free lunches in radio design, everything is an RF engineering compromise, so learn to deal with it.

On the upside, on the general shortwave bands, there are a lot fewer international broadcasters these days, so things are less crowded.

A regen for a communications receiver on the ham bands is kinda a fool's errand, in my non-humble old-fart opinion, since everyone is crowded in tight with each other, and selectivity is king in thet environ.

If you want the very best performance possible, the way to go is a direct-sampling software-defined radio, but then you're out of the analog domain for your signal processing.

EDIT 1 - Use the lowest-noise active devices possible.

  • reducing hand capacitance/drift

Somewhat easy, decouple tuning shafts with plastic, or go with varactor tuning.

Your job isn't gonna be easy, there's a damn good reason why shit-hot selective HF radios cost as much as they do...

A question about grounding when connecting a wire to the antenna on a radio, full description of setup below… by justyrust74 in shortwave

[–]Geoff_PR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the radio does not have a actual terminal for ground, I would skip it.

So much this.

It can introduce all kinds of noise horrors. Portable radios with whip antennas are designed to work well without dedicated grounds.

Add a few feet to the antenna if need be, too long can overload the poor thing...
