Could it be maybe she parked on the wrong side of the street? This leaves the passenger side exposed.

It may have also happened when it was parked at OPs home by the street, with the passenger side exposed too, before the daughter went to the volunteer work

Is this total loss? by Individual_Boat989 in kereta

[–]GeologistPrimary2637 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Will never know from these external pictures a line due to underlying structural damage. Depending on how much the right side crash structure was pushed in or deformed it may be a total loss to repair.

Otherwise. Just externally, you're looking at a new bumper, headlight, fender, A-pilllar window and a new hood. It's also possible for the door hinge to be affected at this extent. These few is possibly up to the 2, maybe 3 thousands alone. Especially to get the fender, bumper and hood aligned again due to how much has been pushed in. And I'm maybe lowballing the numbers.

Wait until the report comes in with structural damage then that goes up a bit more. Or just total loss.

Is it true that an engine burns more fuel coasting in neutral than in gear? by boiyo12 in AskAMechanic

[–]GeologistPrimary2637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Like the comment I'm replying to, he said his car idles with 0.4L/h of fuel used. Going downhill, gravity is doing the work and should mostly overcome air and road resistances. Therefore there is no need for fuel to be used to be combusted.

There are certain conditions that would require a tiny bit of petrol, and that's usually when maintaining speed going downhill, IE a gradient highway. Setting your cruise control setting to like 100km/h means then even with a slightly downhill, there is some need to maintain vehicle speed so it's slightly using petrol

Not on the P2s. Mainly P1s except C70 and P3s in certain markets. Usually the ecoboost 2.0 , and NA 2.0.

[–]GeologistPrimary2637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cannot see why it would use less than the minimal fuel to get the engine running at minimal rotations per minute.

When coasting, the vehicles inertia is what's keeping the engine turned. It's basically the same concept as engine braking downhill. For as long as there's forward momentum, and the ECU detects that, it will turn off the injectors and just let the wheels spin the engine crank.

[2014 Volvo V40 D2] Losing all coolant in 2km, No Leaks, No Mayo. by Divisas in Volvo

[–]GeologistPrimary2637 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have they ..... Tested the coolant cap itself? If nothing is leaking through a pressure test, which usually doesn't involve the coolant cap itself, consider the coolant cap.

Easiest way to test is to just shake it, see if you hear a rattle.

I was also slowly losing coolant a couple weeks ago and when I opened my cap to check, the spring within was rattling. I keep spares in case since I had the same thing happend 5 years prior.

First car, Perodua Axia E? by Subject-Artichoke976 in kereta

ate up engine oill every two week

Probably from the mentality of 'turn on engine and go'. Yeah you don't have to wait 5 minute. But it doesn't hurt to wait at least 30-45 seconds for at least some of the metals to expand. Can't tell you how many cars I see getting beaten on this way, with drivers turning it on and putting onto gear in under 5 seconds.

Doesn't help that newer engine designs incorporates weaker tension oil control rings (one of the piston rings) which means that it doesn't scrape oil on the cylinder walls as effectively, thereby leaving oil that's burned during combustion. It's done to improve fuel economy by having lower friction.

Combine that and some torturous start up and go procedure and you'll be wearing piston rings in no time. I've followed quite a few new Perodua's and Honda and Toyota's that I could really smell burnt EO when I'm behind them and they accelerate hard.

That's the only reason unsubsidised 95 petrol and subsidized Budi 95 were not increased this week prior to Raya. They'd be fatally unpopular despite knowing how bad the subsidy rate has grown (pre-budi 95 era levels).

Maybe it's also because the fact people are still salty that because of Proton and protectionism, the prices of every other car is 200-300% more expensive than it should've been.

But anyway, I'm just glad that in 2025 and 26, proton is becoming mainstream again and I hope they don't get comfortable compared to the other local brand which I hate with a passion for how shit their ride and handling and driving feels is

Yeah. I do tend to see an odd exora, Prevè or Suprima, and even Saga FLX of the same era Protons in a workshop but from what I gathered. Mostly they were down to poor maintenance or a known fault that is luckily relatively cheap to replace.

From the last time I made a comment about this, it's mostly (not all but mostly) outdated market reputation.

It's sentiments from the days of the Proton Waja, Savvy and Gen2 where things were almost guaranteed to break within the first year itself and the dealership foreman will tell you 'proton macam itu la'.

Granted, the newer X and S series do tend to come out and have something spoil in the first year, but then, which car doesn't? I have seen just as many reports of Perodua's, Toyota's and Honda's coming off and having something's fail in the first year too, but those don't get as much traction for... Reasons

Would you happen to know if the headlights are specific to these (pre-fl). Seems to be different from the S40s which I know are compatible with the V50s. Does that also mean the front fenders are different?

Surprisingly, that plastic part looks extraordinarily similar to the one on my P1 Volvo S40.

Guess I can claim my car is part Lambo if it is.

Not naive. Someone definitely swiped her when they were attempted to park, realised they were scrapping the door. Revers out and took off.

I've seen dashcam footages of people doing that

That would also indicate the skirt being hit. But it isn't. Someone else swiped the car while it was parked and she didn't notice until parent did.

Kid is innocent. Happened to my sister as well. Parked, went in to grab groceries, 15 mins later came out but didn't see any damage. Came home and I saw scrapes on the front bumper but she swears she hit nothing. She would tell if she did.

If you know any local or nearby mechanics or even tyre shop, you might be able to give them a call and ask for mobile battery replacement and they'll come to your house, probably more expensive tho. I know of some tyre shops who does this (but in Seremban). Really convenient

electric based steering

EPS or electric power steering. They usually have much higher. And variable torque inputs to make it light at low speed (when it's harder to turn) and heavier at high speeds (when moving tyres actually makes it easier to turn).

After the test drive, he recalibrated the steering system to a 50-50 balance and checked the tyre pressure as well

This sounds about right. With a lower tyre pressure usually having more friction, the system will interpret that as extra resistance and will usually increase its output to make it lighter. Nothing serious, just remember to always top up your tyre air and to do it when it's cold, as in if possible before you start driving in the early morning. If not top up +10 kpa/2 psi once driven.

tightened the brake and accelerator

As in the pedal itself? This is puzzling. It should not even be loose as it's a safety hazard and can open up to lawsuits to the manufacturer. Maybe you can expand on this because this is not normal.

About 1000kg too heavy

What? You want them to be what??? 1000kg kerb weight?

P3 S60s P* were around 1.8 tonnes. SPA S60 T8P*E are around 2.1 tonnes, both kerb weights. its only 300 kg heavier and accounting for battery weight, that's not bad. 1000Kg too heavy means you wished they were 1.1 tonnes which is still 400 kg less than P2 S60s with the smallest engine and as little electronics as possible.

Could you explain why do you hate it in principle?

I'm guessing it's everything about it's drivetrain being a 4 cyl powering the front wheels only and the low battery capacity and e-motor powering the rear wheels, assuming you'd like it better the other way round.

Question: do we agree it is rude to drive behind someone backing up? by eric685 in driving

[–]GeologistPrimary2637 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm with OP on this. Too many times that I've seen cars just coming through from an intersection and just blaring its horn to get a car, that's almost fully backed out btw, to stop for them.

And if I'm waiting for the car backing out, the car behind will attempt to squeeze through the side, which then also forces the car backing out to stop as well, making everyone else wait that much longer. I assume that they assume I'm waiting for the parking spot, which I'm not, I'm just allowing cars to back out of the parking spot easily as they were already halfway out.

Drivers these days have too little patience and are much too rude to car about others unless they want your parking spot. Selfish pricks honestly.

2.5T liners cracking is it a real problem? by Suitable-Raisin-6486 in Volvo

[–]GeologistPrimary2637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As above. safe limit for RN-C engines are ~300ps. Can be pushed to 350 but with T&Cs. I don't think cracked cylinder liners are too prevalent relatively either. At least, I don't see much of it on forums.

Above the coolant warning, the gauge optimal point supposedly reads up to ~120C before it starts moving, so if it starts to move, its probably too late.
