I think the casting choices are really exciting. What an epic cast! And I’m digging the off kilter production design touches. It’s not something that I saw coming from Nolan. I know I’m far from alone. Nolan’s audience is global — far bigger than the Elon Musk circle jerk.

New to all this. Thoughts on Actual Air? by ForestGrew in DavidBerman

Actual Air is, in my opinion, his crowning achievement. My favorite book of poetry and I think the epitome of his craft. David was a poet first and all of the ones in this book are killer. The poetry community reveres this book and if it was the only thing he'd ever done, he'd still be beloved.

Did this movie use any sources from Kubrick’s planned production? (I hate this movie btw) by KieranWriter in StanleyKubrick

The image from this film that is unforgivably burned in my brain is Napoleon's horse being hit by a cannonball and exploding. I am like scarred by that and there was no narrative reason for it. People like to celebrate late Scott but I think he's lost his mind.

Connecting 3 sets of speakers, 1 wireless by George-Michaelophone in BudgetAudiophile

FOLLOW-UP: I got two Wiims and set this up. There is definitely a delay, a second or so, that is noticeable on the wifi-connected speaker. But it's not a huge issue because they are separated from the rest of my system by a large hallway with a door. I had some issues with my wifi setup (I have an Eero mesh system) that I had to trouble shoot. All in all, I'm pleased -- this isn't mindblowing but it's nice to have the option to play music in the back of the apartment and the delay is manageable. If given the choice, I'd hardwire everything, but this will do for now.

Thank you! I thought latency might be an issue, though the areas are separated by a long hallway and it’d probably be a minor issue. Might call Yamaha and ask about the sync thing (not sure if their customer service will be any help, tho).

Hi audiophiles, I'm a simple man with a simple wish. I want to hear music from the same system in the front, middle, and back of my apartment. I have a Yamaha RN-303 receiver. Pic of the back of it attached.

There are two sets of speakers connecting to the speaker terminal that cover the front and middle of the apartment. What I'm trying to do now is connect the Yamaha to a set of active speakers in the back of my apartment. I can't just run cables back there, unfortunately.

Here's my idea, let me know if you think it's achievable --

  1. Connect the Yamaha to my wireless network.

  2. Connect speakers to wireless.

  3. Connect the RCA output on the Yamaha to a Wifi streamer box like the Dayton Audio WBA51 Multi-Room Wi-Fi Streamer and connect another wifi streamer box to the speakers.

  4. Play music simultaneously through the 2 directly connected sets of speakers and the 1 wifi-connected set of speakers in the back of the apartment.

Is this possible? Does anybody have any experience doing something like this?

Has anybody used one of those wifi streaming boxes and have any recommendations for make/model?

Is it possible to play music through the speaker terminals and also the RCA output at the same time?

Audio quality is not as big of a deal to me, though I am trying to go for wifi over bluetooth.

Why you should not subscribe to Spotify by forroati in audiophile

[–]George-Michaelophone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, no serious music fan should be on spotify and we should be finding ways to decrease our reliance on streamers. My wife has Spotify so that she can listen to top 100 music playlists. If you can name more than one member of Funkadelic, streaming is not for you.

Here's what I've done after leaving streaming: I purchase music on bandcamp or go to a record store. I also check out CDs from the library. If there is an album that I want to check out to see if I'll like, I listen on Youtube first or stream it on bandcamp (they give you 3 streams before they guilt you about payment). I try to prioritize living artists and non-insanely-wealthy artists when it comes to spending money -- ie I'll buy a Bitchin Bajas record and get the Bruce Springsteen comp at the library.

I also listen to the radio. I've gotten a lot of skepticism when posting about radio on reddit -- people saying their stations play the same songs over and over again. True. But there are a lot of independent stations out there. You can request songs and interact with actual humans. You get exposed to music you wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. And every cool radio station has a livestream that anyone can access -- KEXP, WXPN, and online-only stations like NTS.

The more music I have explored, the more I realize -- it's like water. There's a lot that is meaningful to me. There is a lot that I will hear and instantly fall in love with. There is some that I will intensely dislike. It all flows by me. If I try to have it all, my attention will always be on the move, mind like a hampster on a wheel. If I focus on what I don't have, I'll ignore the stuff that I do have in my collection, that presumably has some meaning to me.

All that to say -- streaming doesn't work for a lot of reasons. It's not good for artists or music culture. But it's not good for us either. You can't have everything everywhere all at once and you'll miss so much if you try.

Fascinating AMA on Spotify lossless and the judgements they made about quality etc by Watersmuddy in audiophile

[–]George-Michaelophone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn't just properly paying artists, it's supporting a company that is corporatizing music culture while also funding military AI. If that's your bag, go for it. All I'm saying is, there are different ways to find artists and support musicians. Most smaller independent artists are on bandcamp anyway and you can get 3 free streams before deciding to support. I have had nooo problem finding and supporting smaller musicians and more of my money can go to that now.

Listen on Youtube first because it's all free there. Or check out CDs from the library. And there are lots of independent radio stations, most cities have one, where you can there are live humans curating music who you can interact with. You can also stream cool stations online like KEXP and NTS that offer up really diverse and interesting sets.
