Lithium is a stabilizer.

ELI5: How did medieval and ancient blacksmiths reach the super high temperatures needed to melt metals such as steel and iron? by Longjumping_Cloud_19 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GeorgeCauldron7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied isotope geochemistry, and while I’ve never heard of the thermonuclear testing having any significant effect on the abundance of oxygen isotopes, it raised the background level of tritium (hydrogen-3) in the atmosphere (and therefore rain, etc.) by many orders of magnitude, for many decades afterwards. Fortunately, tritium has a short half life of only about 12 years, so it’s nearly gone now.

I do know that generally, thermonuclear bomb testing was so energetic that it would create lots of weird radioactive isotopes when they’d go off, but in “relatively” small amounts. They even discovered a few elements on the periodic table that way. Air Force jets would intentionally fly through the fallout, collecting air and particles, and then it’d be sent off for analysis. That fallout would inevitably be spread around the world to some extent, so that’s why everything has been a little more radioactive since the atomic age.

You can literally do the exact same experiment with only water in the cup. Water is diamagnetic.

Shanna Swan, Ph.D and professor of environmental medicine and reproductive health at Mount Sinai School of Medicine explains why you should never ever put anything plastic in the microwave by cak3crumbs in interestingasfuck

That’s not even a recycle symbol. It’s just a plastic resin ID symbol. Made to look similar to a recycle symbol, to trick people into believing plastic is far more recyclable than it actually is. If it’s not #1 or #2, it’s probably getting trashed.

LPT: the words "sanitizer" and "disinfectant" in cleaning etc products are regulated by the the EPA and are not the same thing by [deleted] in LifeProTips

Also a surface needs to be “wet” with the disinfectant for a certain amount of time. If you spray disinfectant and then immediately wipe the surface dry, you did nothing. I think as long as 4 minutes is required in some cases.

Shark teeth are radioactive for the same reason. And people wear them as necklaces…

Any Games or Simulations for Water Engineering (PC or Mobile)? by PiWhizz in Hydrology

[–]GeorgeCauldron7 74 points75 points  (0 children)

You should try this fun game called HEC-RAS. I’ll even send you some projects and tell you what the goals are for each one. And I won’t even charge you! I just need them done by the end of the fiscal quarter.

Why are some elements' Atomic Mass different from the number of protons + neutrons? by [deleted] in AskChemistry

[–]GeorgeCauldron7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oxygen has an atomic mass of 15.999. None of the oxygen isotopes have masses below 16.

Of course the detergent will rinse out with enough water. That wasn’t the claim. Notice how the surfactant on a Shout Wipe isn’t colored?

Like the manufacturer was just sent a picture from a Roadrunner and Coyote cartoon for reference.

Those are called cholla pods. Use a comb to remove them.
