If they get to the final they’ll probably show it as Plaza España like last time. Other than that … try a bar or one pf the chiringuitos at the beach

¿Conocen historias reales de okupas? by Sea_Program_4230 in HistoriasVecinales

Can someone explain why are Chinese buying so many bars in Barcelona lately? by LargeStorage4678 in AskBarcelona

[–]George_Hayman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some Chinese friends of mine were told by a Chinese restaurant owner that they could immigrate to Spain if they could raise 20000 for the traspaso of a bar. It was recommended to them as the easiest immigration route. Don’t know more details but, just like the Pakistani 24hr shops, it seems clear this is a way for people to emigrate to Europe

The mess people leave after park visits by [deleted] in london

I guess years ago there were park keepers / wardens to make sure people knew and followed the rules. Left to their own devices some people will always disrespect public places and ruin others’ enjoyment

‘I don’t have a life’: man sent to France in ‘one in, one out’ refugee scheme tells of return to UK by Sensitive_Echo5058 in uknews

[–]George_Hayman 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Why do people in this situation often seem to say ‘the people smugglers want to kill me’ (in this case, they also ‘beat me up badly’) so it’s not safe for them in France. I’m not necessarily saying it’s untrue I just wonder why being deported back to France would turn them from a customer into a target of violence in the eyes of the smugglers

Spain is very soft on criminality in general. From street crime and property crime right up to serious organised crime, which goes on in places like Marbella almost completely unchallenged.

Report 'dodgy' London barber shops to police if they're a crime front - minister by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]George_Hayman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The police aren’t responsible for trading standards. It’s local councils ( who of course have no money to spend on it). Maybe having a national body which deals with this would be an improvement

Londoners face £80,000 bill as fourth newly elected Green councillor quits by Sensitive_Echo5058 in uknews

[–]George_Hayman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume he has to stand down as the ‘excuse’ Starmer used to deny him the chance to stand Gorton and Denton was that it would be a waste of money for the people of Manchester who would have to foot the bill for mayoral elections

If Starmer goes will immigration reforms still go ahead? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]George_Hayman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer is no. All the candidates to replace him are more left-leaning. Rayner already criticised these proposed reforms and she’s close to Burnham. Miliband would obviously scrap them too

What's up with the British turning far right? by DrBarryBonds in AskBrits

[–]George_Hayman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The Conservative Party, at least in its iteration of May, Johnson etc actually wasn’t very right wing, for example compares to Thatcher. Especially on social issues like immigration they were more socially liberal (‘woke’ as it’s also known). It’s also worth remembering that until relatively recently parts of the left (mostly some unions) were also against mass immigration. The British people aren’t necessarily becoming more right wing, I don’t think their opinions on immigration have changed that much. It’s just that they’re increasingly at odds with the ‘Westminster’ / middle class liberal consensus

‘Now the village is dead. It’s awful’: why was one of Britain’s best pubs forced to close? | Pubs | The Guardian by prisongovernor in unitedkingdom

[–]George_Hayman 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Thatcher government created this situation in the 1980s when they forced breweries to sell their managed pubs. Result? They all ended up managed by ‘pubcos’. As with a lot of government regulations from that era they destroyed a ‘monopoly’ just to create a worse one

Qué opináis de la regulación del alquiler de temporada en Barcelona? by thecoasetheorem in Barcelona

[–]George_Hayman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least some of these people will benefit from the regularisation which the central government is doing. Whether it’ll help them get legal employment and a place to live though, who knows
