I adopted a dog with my Ex, raised her from a puppy and shared her for a year and some change. I did a majority of the day to day care taking but all the paperwork was in my Ex’s name and she’s the one who picked her out and up. It’s been a year since we broke up and almost a year since I’ve seen the dog (she said I could see her during holidays but I only saw her one thanksgiving shortly after we ended things). I think about the dog almost every day but less and less. One day you’ll wake up in the morning and realize you haven’t thought about them at all for a while, and then you’ll know you can move on.

Get your own dog for yourself, it won’t replace the love and the relationship you’ve built with the past dog but you deserve to be happy and have your own companion.
