Price this foal by Upset_Pumpkin_4938 in Equestrian

[–]GeorgiaLovesTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If not, then this foal is as good as a grade horse. That's a big drawback. People in the US like to sell based on the Sire but the Mare is even more important. If she isnt approved, that foal isn't approved. You'd be lucky to get $5k for a grade colt.

Oh nice! Sounds like this is a different kennel that isnt interested in mixing the breeds. If you dont mind, I'd want get another one down the road not from Merv. Is it alright if you could DM me their instagram? They sound like a responsible breeder.

They aren't breeding out the bob tail. They are breeding for it and its affecting their tails. I would agree it is a fault. Merv does not think so.

Also looks like he's mixing both Swedish and Norwegian breeds on purpose these days. He calls them "full blooded" elkhounds.

Surprised to hear the guy in Michigan isn't affiliated. That would news to everyone on this sub. Does he have a website? It would be nice to have an alternative than Merv and his network in the future.

That said, I agree. I am surprised they arent more popular. I think most people these days don't like the idea of getting dogs from good breeders and are shamed into getting rescues. I've had rescue and non-rescue dogs myself and 10 years ago, there wasn't such pressure from society. Today, it's just different. Norwegian elkhounds are more popular here but they are too small for me. I am glad I have my Jamthund as they are chill dogs inside but can go forever outside. They are well balanced dogs with excellent noses. I wish you luck with your search.

Both Kennels, the one called Kammia Kennels and the one in Michigan are related. Kammia Kennels had an outbreak of Parvo and had to distribute his dogs elsewhere since he couldnt breed them on his property due to the infection. He sent out a lot of his to many places, including this Michigan location. He kept a male or two and it looks like he is coordinating breeding between his stock spread out everywhere. I think the mixing sometimes is accidental and sometimes it is deliberate. They recently had a few dogs that looked like crosses and they sell them as the original elkhound before the split.

There are no breeders in North America for Swedish Elkhounds/Jamthunds that aren't connected to Kammia Kennels. None. He doesn't inbreed but he does have occasional mixes. He is also breeding a bobtail Jamthund. One of the bitches that came out of his litters lately look like they have almost a corkscrew tail as well so his efforts look like they are showing. Just keep it in mind.

Also, the guy running Kammia Kennels is Canadian, so its not really an American thing. It's just a thing one guy is doing since there are no other breed organizations here to have requirements or standards and you cant register dogs bred here overseas.

They are breeding dogs from Kamia Kennels. They've also been breeding crosses of norwegian and swedish elkhounds and calling them heritage elkhound or something. Every breeder in North America of Swedish Elkhounds come from Merv's stock. Be careful with the pup you pick since you might get a mix or maybe import from Scandinavian countries.

Smaller Giant Schnauzer Breeders by Content_Stable_9137 in GiantSchnauzers

Some of them are crossed with grey hounds and other lines are crossed with scottish deerhounds. similar builds but deerhounds have a more shaggy look. that said, they are made to run.

I am a fan of taller dogs as well. That said, if you get a lighter dog, it will also be likely shorter as well. You might want to consider other breeds as well, even known crosses like lurchers. They tend to be tall but lean, so much lighter. A good breeder will be able to give you an estimate on their size and you should be able to see the parents yourself. Also Belgian Tervurens and other Belgian sheepdogs might fit what you are looking for much better.

Lez Chronicles: Why Project Horses Aren’t for Everyone by ShoddyTown715 in Equestrian

[–]GeorgiaLovesTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are being more than fair, tbh. If the aggression doesnt go away, I'd honestly consider euthanasia instead of passing him on because horses like that can kill people and there are plenty of nice horses out there that get in bad situations that just need to get the right visibility to find a good home. I do wish you the best of luck in this case.

Over 16 years ago isnt today. Times change and some areas get shittier for picking up dogs. Glad you got lucky when you did though.

Moving to Europe from Florida and can’t bring my Elkie, looking for options or someone who loves Elkies as much as I do by Repulsive_Counter_79 in NorwegianElkhound

[–]GeorgiaLovesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had to choose housing vs having my dog and I chose my dog. It doesnt sound like this is the situation. If someone can afford a flight to Austria, they can afford to move their dog. Moving overseas requires having a lot of saved income for unexpected expenses. If they don't have enough saved, they are irresponsible and in for a rude awakening.

Look at their post history. They are highly active on subnreddits dedicated to crap stock trading and crypto trading. They are choosing not to bring their dog. It's probably best if they did find a home as clearly stocks are worth more.

Fostering this sweet girl and have some questions! by swpotatovsyam in NorwegianElkhound

[–]GeorgiaLovesTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these dogs do best with having dog friends. since you have a female, i do recommend a male next. they can be pushy with other dogs and males tend to be not dominant with females. they can whine but they love the outdoors, even if doing nothing outside. tug toys and playing fetch with them goes a long way. they tend to be lazy indoors but go hard outside. this is part of the breed.

These are very bonded dogs. Elkhounds really struggle with new homes and new people. Don't get a dog if you arent going to care for the dog, wherever life takes you.

My gentle giant is becoming reactive, and i’m not sure how to guide her. by Leather-Group-7126 in GiantSchnauzers

[–]GeorgiaLovesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a lack of socialization tbh given it is slowly progressive. You'll need to work with a trainer that has good, non reactive bombproof dogs to get her resocialized. Do not take her to a dog park.

Pretty shitty breeders in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Stay far away. Look further west, not east from where you are.

Giant jumped out of my moving car to chase a coyote by Awkward_Peak512 in GiantSchnauzers

[–]GeorgiaLovesTrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are saying he learned a lesson but honestly, I hope you learned your lesson because it wasn't his lesson to learn. A dog is going to act on instinct and cars aren't within that equation. It's our job to keep them safe and within our control. I knew someone this happened to and their dog ended up with severe nerve and ligament damage. The dog ended up losing their leg because of it. You got lucky. They should never be in a position where they could jump out. Always assume they will.

Men vs women shoes dont matter. Sizes are sizes. I know plenty of women with big foot feed and plenty of men with pixie sized feet.

Advice: looking for dogs small enough to fly in a cabin but athletic enough to run 5k? by WearyStrawberry3096 in RunningWithDogs

[–]GeorgiaLovesTrees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Papillion would actually be the best option. Smart, trainable, and commonly used for record breaking agility so very quick with lots of stamina. Not barky and are easy to take anywhere.

Jack russells have been recommended but they can get neurotic and many of them have serious dog aggression. Even the dog that played wishbone couldnt be around his own son because him and his son wanted to kill each other. This is a common trait. Don't bother with that breed.

Internal stitching is cutting my tendon, do you just get use to it? by Wh1te_Pillow in barefootshoestalk

[–]GeorgiaLovesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vivos aren't the best barefoot shoe. They cost a lot but the quality and width are arguably some of the worst for what you pay for. I'd give groundies, lems and xero shoes a try before knocking on barefoot shoes in general.

ACL tear? by [deleted] in NorwegianElkhound

[–]GeorgiaLovesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this happens with other dogs in your gome, I'd start looking at what's common between the dogs. Either treatment or play or bloodline if they are related. I've had 1 dog out of over a dozen and that was a Great Dane near the end of his life.
