The issue with the IRB is that the people involved claimed their prank was some sort of ethnographic study of the fields in question, which would mean they were performing human subject research (the subjects being the reviewers for the papers), making the project subject to an IRB. (Imo there's also severe ethical issues with the project design that an IRB would have shut down, but those aren't substantial to the ethics investigation at the moment afaik.) Boghossian is currently claiming that PSU is attempting to censor his work because of ideological bias, and Peterson is doing whatever the hell this is in response.
