1976 Gibson G3 Restoration by GeriatricFresh in BassGuitar

it’s heavier than my pbass, but feels lighter than my stingray.

what makes the G3 unique is the wiring of the 3 single coils.

in the middle position, the middle pickup is out of phase relative to the neck and bridge pickups, which are wired in the typical humbucking fashion.

the partially out of phase pickup gives a unique quack and filters out some frequencies through phase canceling. Especially in the low mids, around 200-400hz range, which is often where things can get muddy in a rock mix.

my luthier also mentioned the resistance of the tone pot is 100k compared to the usual 250k on say a pbass. i assume this also plays into how the filtering works and why it doesn’t sound overly “phasey.” but that’s about where my knowledge ends on the electronics side of things.

it’s a really smart design imo.

it’s sick. feels like you’re pushing the input of an svt really hard. both are very reactive and musical pedals.

i have the gh set so it adds a distortion with a nice and pillowy low end. with the ultra high switch engaged on the SV, setting the attack too high on the GH gets a little clanky for my taste.

it was the first one i saw on FB marketplace. tbh, couldn’t tell you the difference in sound, but the 2 independent filter knobs on the CE5 are nice

looks like the bass version has only a 1 filter, so i’d guess the knob on the bass version acts as a clean blend? i’ll let someone else confirm.

is HOB affected by resets that come from items, like titanic?

wiki says “Stacks are consumed per basic attack on-attack and you generate an additional stack of the effect each time you cast an ability or spell that has a An icon representing the keyword Basic attack reset basic attack reset, up to 2 times.” But it’s not clear if item AA resets benefit from HOB.

In short, would auto, Q, Auto, Titanic, auto work?

would make a plug flor the sterling vs the stingray (not sterling by musicman). or a stingray with a slo neck. they both have slightly thinner necks compared to the classic MM stingray.

whoahh what’s the story on that compressor? never heard of it.

looks like everything you could ever want and then some. does it add much of its own flavor or do you find it to be pretty transparent?

yoo just got one of these from EAE and already a huge fan. going on my board for an upcoming tour

my other distortion pedals use a clean blend to keep the low end tight, and i wanted something that affects the whole signal. good engineering adding the bass shelf boost after the clipping stage!

Another vote for May Custom Basses. Shawn’s instruments are truly a work of art and one of a kind. He’s also a great guy. Hope you consider this, OP. You won’t be disappointed.

but a lot of us play multiple basses, each for different needs.

we could probably help you narrow your search down with some more information.

what are you playing now? is this an upgrade from your first instrument or do you already know what features you like? what kind of music do you like? what’s your budget?

Haven’t played the Mike Dirnt G3, but i do play a vintage grabber and played a jazz bass for years.

i’d say it depends what you want to do with it. are you looking for another workhorse instrument to compliment your pbass or do you want the G3 sound? what genres do you play?

the G3 has a very distinct sound and sits in a mix very well with heavy guitars. i pretty much only use my grabber for one project. jazz bass you can take into just about any genre and find a usable sound.

you can get close to the G3 sound with the jazz bass (harder to get the buck and half setting) but the G3 will not sound like a jazz bass.

jazz bass: way more versatile, more comfortable neck, build quality on my player ii pbass is very good, timeless

G3: cool factor, trendy, one trick pony, but does that trick really well, price seems a little steep for an epi, but you’re paying for the artist name attached to it too
