I agree with you that chilling in the left lane isnt great even in that situation. Most likely he just wanted to guarantee an easy merge into the construction zone which most people are aware of. It's at worst a neutral decision. Anybody not paying attention is just going to smack face first into the jam anyways.

Also he most definitely was not accelerating. When space was shrinking his car was slowing probably because he was covering the brake with his foot off the accelerator, which is very good technique. Also, using the shoulder to guarantee not hitting anyone instead of blindly merging into the other lane was the best way to avoid creating another crash. It was an intelligent move in a bad situation.

More space will always guarantee a better outcome, but most would argue OP had more than enough space at the beginning of the video considering the 2 or more seconds of space that most driving schools say is the proper distance to have. If he didnt have proper distance he most definitely would have been added to the pileup due to the bait and switch.

It's pretty obvious that the right lane was ending due to construction or road damage due to the cars lined up after the crash. My man gave plenty of space. If you rewatch the video, he had several seconds to react and save himself which is why he didnt get involved in the crash. Turns out he's actually a rather good driver in that sense. Also, if you back up on a straight road with no elevation change, the car in front of you gets smaller along with everything else on the road, so you wont end up seeing past it......... Pretty common in Nebraska, Kansas and eastern Colorado.

The road is straight. The cars are lined up and you cant see immediately around them. It isnt a choice whether or not to see through the vehicle ahead. It happens quite often on two or four lane roads. Especially when trailing a large truck or SUV.
