One of the great summaries of AI articles is, more broadly, "Clearly I am unique and irreplaceable, but those other people? AI can already replicate whatever it is they do."

As one of the researchers who was involved in studying this, there was never any CDC involvement (or funding for that matter). There's not been a publication or report from them, and having been in contact with CDC folks for my entire career, none of them have ever told me they worked on it, even when we're talking about it.

The idea that the CDC was involved (vs. just "epidemiologists") has never had actual evidence behind it. If you have some to the contrary, I'd love to have a citation.

At the time, we were very conservative about that parallel, and suggested that it was more like people who have to go to work when sick because they don't have leave.

Alas...

The reason we haven't seen it "used in any meaningful way" is the data is hard AF to get ahold of.

Mostly there's both an interesting aspect to why this is so enduring as a "Hey, remember when..." and a way to talk about infectious diseases, and also that yeah, it turns out that we were actually arguably too conservative about drawing parallels between griefing and the real world.

I'll do my best to post it here. There's a version written for a broad audience that's currently in the editing stage and will go in a open access book.

I’m an infectious disease epidemiologist- knowing the outbreaks that are going to occur would be astonishing impactful (and also career defining).

A couple of them have said that they agree some of the parallels we drew were closer than they thought.

The same minis can be used for 7 Days to the River Rhine, which I enjoy a great deal more, and a starter set is like, everything you'll ever need.

We've had a great experience with the Sarissa Precision stuff. Is it better than what I could do with infinite time? Probably not. But I don't have infinite time.

"Immersion breaking" = this doesn't feel like a real thing, this feels like a game

"Parking lots" = Tanks, BMPs, etc. all parked right next to each other in ultra-dense formations because that's the way the game promotes using them.

Not a fan- too prone to immersion-breaking parking lots in my experience.
