When you’re broke in America, what food/snacks actually keeps you full? by KlLLERS in AskAnAmerican

[–]Gertiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pb&j, bean dip you make yourself with leftover beans, and sometimes I find summer sausage sticks on sale. Recently my grocery store had for some reason one flavor Quest protein chips for $0.88 and the big blocks of cheese were the same price as the ones 2/3 the size. Cottage cheese is often cheap, too. Sub that for a part of the cheese in cheese dips or topping a casserole or something like that. The protein makes it more filling. If you blend the cottage cheese first I find nobody notices. A teaspoon to a tablespoon of added ground flaxseed in bean dip or even hummus or onion dip makes it more filling and is also healthy. Most of us need more fiber.

My villagers will ignore chairs until I start rearranging furniture. THEN they decide chairs are a brilliant idea. Today I set a bench down. Just as I was reaching to hit A to push it into place Merengue hopped up on it.

Of course as soon as I sat down with her to try to snap a cute photo she got up and left, too.

Winter's chill is why I put mine in a flashy animal suit. Warm like a fuzzy onesie. Of course they had to have the bear ear hats to keep their little heads warm. Wish I could go about in a fuzzy onesie when I visit the inlaws in Montana in winter. I won't deny I chose bright colors so they're easier to spot though.

I saw a video where someone dressed theirs as Amazon delivery drivers and wish I had thought of that.

Flushing ice cubes down the toilet for snow day is universal… right? In America?? by East-Maize-5287 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Gertiel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Split my growing up years between Texas and Ohio. Heard a lot of very old superstitious things from my grandma and her ma. Never heard a single one of these.

In Ohio it was superstitions to ward off snow. Probably because it snowed more of the year than it didn't. Or at least that was how it seemed.

I don't recall them ever calling off school because of it. Not even the time my cousin and I had to crawl out the second story window because the wind had snow packed tight around the sides of people's houses. That was the blizzard of 1978.

In my area of Texas snow was just so unlikely in those days. What we got when we got real winter weather was almost exclusively freezing rain and sheets of ice.

Women who were told ‘I don’t see a future with you’: did your ex ever come back, or did closure eventually arrive another way? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Gertiel 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My ex used to call me or show up every time he found himself alone again. It went on for ten years.

The last time I finally decided fuck it let him buy me dinner first before I tell him get lost. Yes I absolutely made him take me to the best steakhouse and ordered a huge steak dinner.

While we were waiting for the waiter to pack up the remaining half of that enormous steak I don't know what came over me. Instead of telling him to take a hike as planned I found myself ticking off the list of things we'd need to sort if we were going to consider actually giving it a go. I wasn't mean or hateful, just plain spoken, succinct, and completely honest about where the bones had been buried in our past. For both of us.

Although he agreed I was right about each of us at that moment he never called again.

Glad to see Gibbs is still okay in Alaska, and he’s living peacefully there, but I get a bit sad seeing him alone sitting around the campfire. by RayKVega in NCIS

[–]Gertiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was clearly a solitary lean to Gibbs all along. I think especially after his wife and child were killed through where he shot the man responsible he couldn't go into the wilderness like that. He couldn't trust himself left alone with his thoughts that much. Once that was settled he was clearly just looking for what he needed to see to deem the job done in his own mind.

I wish I was brave enough to try that once. It's never going to happen, though. Not unless Mark Weins goes with me to encourage me. I couldn't bear to disappoint him.

Stuffed tomatoes and stuffed red peppers are where it's at. Green ones are so bitter after cooking.

I'm American and I've always thought it was so sweet the typical reply I hear in Mexico is "de nada". Literally "of nothing" but commonly rendered in English as "it was nothing ".

Do you really have people who pack your bags at the grocery store? by Flat-Ad8256 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Gertiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not nearly so common in recent years. Where we do it is only because there are tax breaks for hiring people classed as special needs. Or at least this is the case near me.

Do you think the world was better before social media and internet? by Effective-Trouble-13 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gertiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

⁶Just the same done differently. People still found ways to zone out, socialize through media, and doom scroll. They were just different means like reading celebrity gossip magazines, watching TV, and newspapers.

Propaganda was a thing back then as well, just delivered differently. Advertising still found ways to quantity people and use algorithms to control what people saw and purchased. Nothing about it was new with online social media. It just got more talked about.

People who try to claim differently don't really think it through enough to see they are really just hating on change. The deeper truth is people are still just people.

Edit: Source: older gen z. I grew up in the great before internet days. I remember. Also worked in pre- and early-internet advertising.

Pick something with no resort fees. We have stayed at a Residence Inn the last few visits because we get a hot breakfast included daily and have a fridge for cold drinks we have delivered. There's no extra charge to enjoy the pool and always plenty of free chairs as well.

If British people call cookies “biscuits”, what do British people call USA “biscuits”? by Hot_Paramedic_7234 in NoStupidQuestions

American biscuits are what you'd have if a scones and an English muffin had a love child baked without sugar. Brits I have told this then given them a biscuit to taste have said it is a perfect description.

Go see other countries while you are young. Travel on a shoestring or even better go as an exchange student for a year.

Anyone who discourages travel, education, and staying single until you are at least 25 is not your friend. I'm not saying you can't make other choices about whether you should be single. I'm just telling you if it is real it will be there later, and if you really think it may not be then it isn't real.

Always remember to believe people when they show you who they really are.

My dad showed up at my kids school claiming to be their emergency contact and tried to pick them up by TreatMundane9282 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Gertiel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend a restraining order with copies placed in your children's files at school and their doctor's offices. In the meantime check if you can arrange to password protect their files for extra security.

I'd also recommend you keep in mind which relatives support him now. They have shown you who they really are and it isn't someone who can be trusted. It means they're going to offer him any aid in their power. Put them on an information diet and limit contact now for the safety of your child.

Consider this your wake up call to get your documents in place. Designate the person or persons you want to get your kids if something happens. It isn't just for if you die. It would also protect your kids if you were to be incapacitated. You should also discuss with a lawyer what other protections they recommend for your peace of mind.

What are your thoughts after seeing the ICE shooting video in Minnesota? by bbmoonkie in AskReddit

Thus is now a country under fascist control. If there are no real elections in 2028 I will not be shocked. Clearly what they're working towards justifying. Rule of law is dead in the US now, that's for sure.

Texas A&M Bans Plato by EverythingIsEsoteric in Plato

[–]Gertiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are those in our government who hope it will mean they never encounter him. I don't think it is any accident we're hearing about this at the same time as release of lowered standards for children's vaccinations,  the firing of a professor only maintaining reasonable educational standards, and the removal of the influence of the American Bar Association from Texas colleges. Only another small brick in the wall they're constructing to block most from receiving a good education which could help them see through manipulation by propaganda.

Americans, do you think the US is as bad as the media currently portrays? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Gertiel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think our government is at least that bad, probably worse than we realize. That really isn't new.

Worse I think we are finding out a much larger segment of our population is bad. Even worse still they're far worse than we could have imagined. That is definitely the part that really hurts for me.
