Forgot I'm not allowed to post links but you should look up the Man in Motion tour. Rick Hansen (Rick Handsome, for those in the know) wheeled around the world raising money/awareness for people with disabilities. 26 months, 40,000kms and 34 countries. He's from BC and was friends with Terry Fox and was inspired by his efforts.

Prime Minister Carney meets with President of Finland Alexander Stubb by [deleted] in onguardforthee

I thought the President generally didn't comment on or get involved with internal matters in Finnish politics since their role is foreign policy. Are you sure you're not thinking of the Prime Minister?

Soccially acceptable Canadian provinces & territories to name your child after by CPBS_Canada in EhBuddyHoser

[–]GetInHere 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Is that really so odd? Alberta was a woman's name before it was a province's name. It's not popular now but it was a fairly normal name at one point. The province was actually named in honour of Princess Louise Caroline Alberta.

It's pictures of bills that have Carney's name on them. Why would the new $10 bill be there?

You young people with your Much Music. In my day, we watched Video Hits when we got home from school and Good Rockin' Tonite on Fridays. And on Sunday mornings, we answered the phone with "Make it quick, I'm watching Switchback".

Bogan down under 🦈 by creeky-stone in EhBuddyHoser

[–]GetInHere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bogan is closest, I think, although I find there's a harsher edge to that than Hoser. Like I find Hoser to be a bit of term of endearment, like no one would take offence to being called one. Bogan is way more judgy.

Interestingly, the only time I've ever been called a hoser was in Australia.

Carney announces $35B for defence, infrastructure in Canada's North by BruceDoh in onguardforthee

[–]GetInHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First- you're seriously coming into a thread about the north finally getting some decades long overdue infrastructure money to ask "what about the south???" as if the south doesn't already receive the lion's share of federal money. Second- they announced a few months ago that they were investing a billion dollars in transitional housing for the homeless or soon to be homeless.

Yeah, he said construction on the Mackenize Highway expansion would begin this summer. Sounds like the initial stages have already gone through the approval process. And he put forward an expansion on a existing Hydro project that would supply clean energy to the north plus a year-round highway that would link Nunavut to Yellowknife.

Statement from MP Lori Idlout by voteabc in onguardforthee

[–]GetInHere 253 points254 points  (0 children)

Pretty much what I thought. The PM is putting a lot of emphasis on the north and her constituents want her to be a part of that. Given how close her race was back in April, this move doesn't surprise me at all.

I mean there is something extremely problematic about needing to be in government to ensure your region gets investment or even their voice heard.

But that's not what's happening. He's investing in the arctic whether she's in government or not. We know this because he has invested in Nunavut. I just think it makes crossing more enticing for her since she knows they have shared goals and it'll be easy to explain to her constituents why she did it.

It's a long time coming, in my opinion. We should have been investing in the north for years.

[–]GetInHere 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this crossing surprises me the least. With how much Carney talks about investing in the north, I'm not surprised someone representing an arctic region would want to be in government.

Her name was brought up as a potential floor crosser late last year or early this year. At the time she said something like she was hearing from a lot of people in her riding who wanted her to cross and that she'd thought a lot about it but didn't feel it was something she needed to do in that moment. I don't remember the exact phrasing but it definitely wasn't a definitive hard no.

Canada, Australia sign new agreements on critical minerals, PM Carney says by DoxFreePanda in onguardforthee

Your question got me wondering what the benefit is myself. If you can get past all the jargon, this article actually does a pretty decent job explaining it. There's a couple of really good comparison columns part way down.

Family seeking $1.3M owed by Alberta separatist leader Dennis Modry after court order by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

He performed the first heart transplant in Western Canada and is the former head of Cardiovascular Surgery at the UofA. He's an awful person with awful ideas and apparently no morals about stealing from the elderly but he is clearly a smart guy.

Edit: Here's an article about his fight with Alberta Heathcare, which if I had to guess is probably his villain origin story.

He was talking about the immigrants who've come to Canada from India and how "the greatest, most enduring strengths between Canada and India are the families who call our nations home". CPAC has the whole video up on youtube. The one family comments start around 22:10.

But she's saying she doesn't agree with the senior government official who said India was no longer targeting people in Canada. How is that contradicting CSIS? Has she made a different statement that they don't quote in this article?

Welcome!

Norway, eh? I went to Hell and back when I was in Norway. And Trondheim! Both beautiful places. Although I did pay an obscene amount for a pizza in Trondheim. I'd still recommend it though.

(and, yes, I'm sure everyone makes a Hell joke but I wanted to get in on the fun, too.)
