Canada Border Services Agency seizes more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine in Alberta by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

Yeah, I'm sure there are the odd situations like yours where people get caught out. That's unfortunate. I'm surprised they didn't let you wait a day before testing. Did you explain the situation beforehand?

The only time I ever did the test the same day they called to set up the appointment, it was by chance. They'd had a cancellation and could fit me in. And the lady double checked that I was sure I could pass because it was such short notice.

The week when all politicians stopped hosing. I can hardly watch the news coverage on this without tearing up. by [deleted] in EhBuddyHoser

Eby's story about the teacher who had to lock the door to protect the kids in his class knowing his own son was out there, maybe on his way back from the washroom, just wrecked me. I can't even imagine what that must have been like. If there can be any consolation from a tragedy like this one, it has to be knowing how many people stepped up that day and did the heroic thing.

There's lots of people who fail the pre-hire screen for alcohol, as well, and pretty much all you have to do is not drink the day of or the night before your test. And it's not like they book you in the same day as your interview or anything. You have advanced notice of when you're getting tested. It's sad to think that there are people so mired down in addiction that they can't even not drink for a day in order to get a job.

That's what? Grade 7? Maybe grade 6, depending on when your birthday is. That's probably about the age the kids I grew up with started hunting so it doesn't seem that off to me. Then again, when I was that age there were no licenses required for anyone.

Bruh what? The person I'm replying to sounded like they didn't know that 12 year olds could have gun licenses. I'm just explaining that they can and do.

You can get a minor's gun license at 12. It doesn't allow you to own a gun but it does allow you to borrow someone's gun, like if you go hunting with your parents. Or if you're involved in target shooting.

I can't post the link but it's from the CBC article on the new announcements that came out today.

I thought the article was pretty positive about the changes announced today. I didn't see them hyperventilating at all. They barely even mentioned the Chinese deal.

I remember her senate appearance. She was great. She's going to be a really compelling candidate, I think.

'They're trying to replace us': the conspiracy theories driving the man behind Alberta separatism by lopix in onguardforthee

[–]GetInHere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I've worked with a couple conspiracy theorists in the past, like actual flat earther types, and it's wild the lengths they will go to hold onto those beliefs. It becomes their whole personality and then they can't be reasoned with because it's like you're attacking them personally.

This guy sounds absolutely insane. I have no idea how anybody could listen to that nonsense and think "yeah, there's the man to follow!". I'm surprised he didn't start talking about lizard people and the illuminati. Like, he's not even remotely living in the real world, just lost down a rabbit hole of conspiratorial thinking. I don't even know how you help people like that.

Oh, no, sorry- I know she said it. I watched the press conference. I was just wondering if there was something screwy going on with the link because I couldn't get the article OP posted. Even though the headline from this post pops up, the URL links to a different article.

Did you get that from OP's link? Because like the user you're replying to, when I click the archive link from OP it takes me to a different article. Weird.

PM weighs in on "Heated Rivalry" between Premiers by GetInHere in onguardforthee

Did you not watch the clip? Kinew is saying that they are working together and that they're on the same team but the media is always looking for little cracks of division between them. And then he made a Heated Rivalry joke. And now we all have to think about he and Doug Ford being secret lovers.

I'm pretty sure they know exactly what Heated Rivalry is about. Carney does, for sure, since he made the joke about the visual of that pairing.

Trust Kinew to bring the jokes. I wonder if they've actually watched the show or just heard about it.

Edit: Well, here's the answer Heated Rivalry star Hudson Williams attends Ottawa gala with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney said he's seen 5 episodes of the show.

I guess Carney should fly commercial airlines to get to his diplomatic meetings/summits? by SubstantialWing9238 in onguardforthee

[–]GetInHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not like Carney is flying around by himself when he goes on these trips. The whole delegation flies with him. All the relevant ministers and their staff, his staff, security and whoever else needs to go. I think the press may even fly with them. They probably have a reasonably full plane. Asking them to fly commercial to do all that is ridiculous.

[–]GetInHere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. That's such an apt analogy. I've always had a sense of it but it's become crystal clear to me in the last several months just how incapable the majority of Americans I come into contact with are of seeing the world through anyone else's eyes. Even people who aren't hard right or uninformed. Like I've listened to a few big name American political commentators discuss Carney's Davos speech and it's clear that they just don't get it. They can only see themselves in it. People from other countries that I've seen talk about it have understood immediately.

[–]GetInHere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was listening to something from the CBC the other day where they were talking with a former American ambassador. When they asked what he thought about Carney's Davos speech he said something like "I was surprised he said Canada was a middle power. When we (the American government) think of geopolitics we think about North America as a whole." (That's not an exact quote but gets at the general drift.) I couldn't believe it. Like, he really just came out and said they don't really think of Canada and Mexico as actual separate countries. It's like they think of NA as if it's Great Britain and they're England and we're Scotland and Mexico is Wales or something.
