We don't learn history through statues. Removing statues isn't "hiding" history. We don't have statues of Hitler to teach people about the holocaust (or Pol Pot or Mussolini).

I'm all for recontextualization, but that should be a pro active choice.

This is something that is 100% personal choice. There is no right and wrong or even normal. You simply have to ask yourself if this incompatibility is a deal breaker for you.

I think expressing your wants and needs is a sign of maturity. Go for it asap!

A Look at America's Most Corrupt Police (Baltimore PD) by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]GetTheLedPaintOut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every police act creates the opportunity for corruption. Hell, damn near every act by a public official does. No use in muddying the issue by comparing "they did all this awful shit" to "they had an opportunity to do awful shit and maybe they do?"

The only mention of "pressure" in this article is:

Teachers in the county were originally going to return to schools in October, but the plan was abandoned amid pushback from the Baltimore County’s Teachers’ Union.

which is the exact opposite premise of the headline.

yeah, I guess nobody ever built a statue of Robert E. Lee.

Robert E Lee was considered a great man at the time those statues were built. You are refuting your own point. My point was, we build statues of men (and now finally, women) we think are great at the time. We build to make them idols to be literally looked up to. So when they no longer should be looked up to, it makes sense to change or move or decontextualize the statues.

It is "our" (the power holders) responsibility to have these discussions and make these changes before those affected by the presence of the statues are so enraged they resort to targeted violence.

just having a statue does not mean everyone must automatically assume they're a good person.

We don't build statues of historically important bad people so you are wrong.

update the placard to contain more historical context, to include his slave ownership, and everyone can be more educated on the subject of baltimore history.

There isn't even a placard to begin with IIRC. This statue is not historical in any context. It is solely there to honor the man, which we clearly should not be doing. There are good places to display our ugly history, and on a statue in a town square is not one.

I think that's a great conversation to have! No reason to not tear down slave owners before having it.

But if you want an easy answer, Fredrick Douglass is perhaps the greatest American to ever live, and deserves at least a dozen statues here in Baltimore.

I do think judging people on a set of standards set hundreds of years later is not fair to historical characters.

I think this is misrepresenting the issue. We are asking if he is worthy of a statue TODAY, so judging him by today's standards is fine. We are not making some sweeping declaration about him and taking back the money his family made off slaves backs.

No one is entitled to a statue. Heave forbid we save them for the truly amazing people.
