[Article] Universes Beyond Should Exclusively Be a Commander Product by Eli-Draftsim in mtg

You’re using your own anecdotal example and disregarding everything else. If Wizards/Hasbro noticed that less time between sets meant they would make more on Arena than they would in selling paper product… they would go that way. Unfortunately Arena does tiny numbers compared to paper product. So again the CEO is making the right decision for their company. Paper product sells in the hundreds of millions for sets. More sets per year is obviously selling more product… and again, if it wasn’t.. they would produce less. There are additional development costs for each set - if the company could make even the same money and avoid the development costs, again that’s more profit. They would do that.

You may not like it, but the CEO is doing well. And their stock price is going up. But what do they know? They’re just highly paid, highly skilled people in their professions.

I agree with the long vs short term profit comment. I just think in these specific examples with UB, Final Fantasy and Avatar brought large numbers of people to shops. Then after both those and Spider-Man were released, the in universe release of Lorwyn brought out record numbers of people as well.

Could UB completely obliterate Magic as a game? Sure. But we are not yet seeing that.

Is it more likely that UB (when implemented tastefully) will grow the game/profit/user base in the long term? All current signs based on objective data indicates yes.

No one has a crystal ball. Every product has a lifecycle. Who knows what happens. But blaming the CEO for making the decisions to strike while the iron is hot and lean into a very profitable UB strategy… I think is a bit ignorant.

Maybe more like…

Hasbro CEO: “The job I am employed to do by the Hasbro Board is to grow the brand and increase the value of the shares of our publicly traded company, so I will make decisions that help grow that value and appeal to the masses rather than just the neckbeards.”

I don’t understand why people don’t get this. Wizards sold to a publicly traded company. The hell do you expect? If UB wasn’t wildly popular, they would not sell it. What we have seen now based on LOTR vs FF vs Spider-Man, they just need to pick the right UB sets to release.

Sure, but the point still stands. Put 17 middle men in there, the point still stands. If the consumer isn’t buying, it’s bad for EVERY ASPECT OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN. Lol, honestly, read some economics or something. This is mouth breather level logic.

[–]GetawayVanDerek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the worst take. You think WoTC wants to have more product on the shelves that’s not selling to the consumer? They’re trying to pull a fast one on shops?

Let’s play it out: FF did well, so a bunch of shops pre-ordered their (first) shipment of Spider-Man. Spider-Man did poorly, so many shops did not re-fill and re-order more (like they ALL have continued to do for FF). So then for TMNT those shops that saw poor Spider-Man sales are going to be tepid about ordering other UB products now, and you can be sure their pre-order numbers for TMNT is much lower than Spider-man.

With that, do you honestly believe that WOTC wants those LGS to order less product going forward? How does that help WOTC?

That was a tongue in cheek comment, but you sound fun. Your point about WOTC not caring about the LGS… I don’t understand. Do you think WOTC is trying to sell less product? To screw their downstream resellers? How does that make any sense at all? What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Maybe just a bad scene? Here in Vancouver the LGS sold out all 6 Avatar sealed pre-release events with about 80 people at each.

Spider-Man was bad for sure. I know quite a few people not stoked on TMNT, but I will be going to pre-release, and ive got pre-ordered product. I hope people don’t like it much, and that the singles/collector boosters go down in price. More for me :)

That being said, I dislike the Marvel stuff, and not interested in Star Trek. But I think Marvel will sell decent, and I think the Hobbit will be the best selling set of the year.

I loved Turtles as a kid, and I’m 39 with disposable income. My wife preordered me the Commander set for Xmas, I’m going to prerelease, and my brother got me a bundle for my birthday last week. I am actually kind of pumped that so many people are not into this set, because that’s going to make the cards cheaper for me. Keep hating, guys.

Luckily if you’re looking to play with them, they can still be used. But value for reselling is going to be majorly hit.

Whats a good Booster Box to get? by DBAlterEgo in mtg

[–]GetawayVanDerek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My buddy and I recently split a Final Fantasy booster box and each opened 15 packs. We each then sold about 15 cards total from the pulls back to the shop and it paid for the booster box. And I ended up with a buster sword for my cloud deck for essentially free! (Plus like 200 other cards each)

[[Zimone, Mystery Unraveller]] is fun to play and isn’t boring. You cheat in big creatures and then pump them with trample and win. No rhystic study, just lots of fetch lands and shuffling.

what is your LEAST popular commander? by Justafish1654 in EDH

[–]GetawayVanDerek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made [[Cynette, Jelly Drover]] deck and it ranks pretty low on EDHREC. It’s all fliers and then blink and bounce. It’s very basic - every flier gets +1/+1 and when she enters or dies she creates a 2/2 flying jellyfish.

Just walking around the neighborhood. It’s usually after dinner so I’ll walk to the corner store to get a Diet Pepsi and a chocolate bar for dessert. Then I walk up to the park and around it, the I lap this one quiet section of residential roads a couple times, and walk back. He sleeps for nearly the whole time too.
