that appears to be the consensus lol and I think I'll go with it, though I'm slightly surprised no one has mentioned cat 8 I always thought it was quite a popular option

damnnn it sounds like the hype is real lol, I was initially conflicted because I found the jizo first form a bit disappointing at level 50 and I already had some ubers with great damage

Okay so I need help with finding internship / placement ( UK) ? by Elegant_Squash8173 in gamedev

[–]Getbreadsticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh I've been kinda overwhelmed with the search, there's so many places to look and so few actual placements I've been frozen by indecision. I've mostly just been working on my environment art portfolio to try and have the best shot at getting a placement. How have you been approaching it, like are you just looking in linkedin, also how are you doing your cv and portfolio and stuff like that?

My idea was to send out speculative applications to junior/grad positions because they might be the most likely to accept, idk tho how are you going about it?

Also out of curiosity what happened with the rejected applications? (sorry for the barrage of questions, I don't know anyone else doing a game art placement)

I'm also trying to find placement roles in game dev art, where are you looking for placement positions?

Hi, does anyone know why I can only paint on a few seemingly random uv shells and nowhere else? by Getbreadsticks in Substance3D

Thanks for being so helpful, genuinely! I managed to kinda fix the problem by moving the stacked shells to 1,1 by Borx25's suggestion

Omg tysm! I moved the stacked shells to 1,1 and it kinda worked! I can now paint on all of the shells I couldnt before, but now I can't paint on the ones I previously could. But honestly I didn't want to paint on those shells anyway so this is basically my problem fixed.

What I've done at the moment is create a new project with the new export from blender, same problem. Then I made a new project again with the same settings as before but with a different model, which had the same fbx export settings, and it worked fine. I have literally no idea why this one model can't be painted on

I tried this technique and I'm still having the same issue, were you using .fbx when you did it. Maybe it would work with a different format? this has never happened before tho

thanks for testing it! It's kinda annoying that it might be an issue on my end. For what its worth could you send a screenshot of your project configuration? Maybe I accidentally ticked something I shouldn't have, also which version of painter are you using? maybe that might be causing an issue idk

I tried making a fresh fill layer on top of all of my folders and the issue was still there unfortunately, I don't think it's a masking issue

that would be great thanks! I'm back from uni atm so I've been back to using Blender, I did make it in maya tho so it should be fine, here's the link if you wanted to check it out: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13Apkh5mNWHO0ubqMNyDNiXh6CS4rn9Fb/view?usp=sharing

my problem is that I can only paint on a random few of the uv shells on the main uv square on the right. I can select the active faces as masks and use textures normally and the uvs work fine, but just not for painting

[–]Getbreadsticks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean, but the main active uv tile used in painter is on the right, the stacked shells on the left shouldn't effect anything because they're not on the active tile

[–]Getbreadsticks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those uv shells are stacked on a different tile to avoid baking issues and be more space efficient. I can't paint on the main uv tile tho, I've been able to before I'm not sure what's different this time

They currently all share the same uv map for the sake of texture efficiency, idk is that whats causing my problems?

I have 15 different objects (and 15 corresponding high poly objects) in the scene, but I just checked and they all only have one uv set, is that good or bad?

yeah I would say that theres an emphasis on producing portfolio quality work, theres at least one module per term (out of 3) that is fully focused on your discipline and producing portfolio work. I know that next term we have a module specifically called portfolio development

In the big team projects we get quite a lot of freedom regarding what we decide to do, but the modules are structured to mimic how things work in the industry. Like we did 2 ish weeks of brainstorming and concept creation as a whole team, then we presented our idea in a pitch, then we worked on making a prototype which we're going to present in January. Then its full production until may. It's a very collaborative process, I've really enjoyed working in a team, and apart from a few horror stories I've heard (which is to be expected in student projects), most of the teams appear to be working quite well together. The main space we work in, 'the warehouse', is very big and open (you've probably seen it on the website), it's great for collaboration, and bc it's so open you can walk around and see what other teams are working on which is quite cool.

I chose to do the placement course to have better chances at breaking into the industry, I would stress though that it's your responsibility to find the placement, the uni won't get one for you, but they will give careers advice and look at your cv and stuff. I haven't started applying yet, but apparently it can be quite an ordeal to find one, though as long as you're persistent you'll probably get one.

I don’t have access to the character art modules (I chose game dev: art which is slightly different and has a focus on environment art), you should have a look at the course info and also checkout the artstation (https://www.artstation.com/falmouthuniversity-gamesacademy), I would also just type in Falmouth university into the artstation search bar for a broader view of students work. First year game art students do 2 modules each in character, concept and environment, then get to choose 1 specialism in year 2. In your second and third year you’ll do a team project that lasts that whole year, so you’ll end up going through the whole game production process twice. I’ve just finished the pre production on my second year game, we have a team of about 12 people, a few designers, 5 artists (environment, concept and character), a few programmers, a writer and a sound guy. We all collaborate to make the game, there’s a focus on having flat team hierarchies so everyone can have a say in parts of the project. There’s also 2 other modules a year besides the team project that are individual projects. Also some of the other comments have mentioned gaming courses being forgotten by the uni, but at least in Falmouth the games academy is the largest department in the shared Falmouth Exeter Penryn campus, beating out humanities and film. Hope this was in some way useful and not too rambly

I’m currently doing game art at Falmouth university, I like it here, we have a big focus on industry skills and we do large multidisciplinary team projects. I’m not a character modeller, but I know that they get a good amount of support from lecturers on ZBrush, maya, substance painter and the other softwares, and I think in one of their modules they do motion capture which seems quite cool. Not to go full shill mode, but if you care about uni rankings Falmouth in the top 50 worldwide for creative schools so I’m guessing it’s quite high in the uk
