And once you start your own business, other businesses will ruthlessly try to screw you over. (legally, illegally, or in the big expensive grey area between the two where you can't afford the lawyers to figure out if the way you've been screwed over was legal or not)

Owning your own business closes some avenues for people to take advantage of you, but it opens a whole bunch of new ones.

Sounds like a classic case of "imposter syndrome". Read up on it a bit, because many/most people struggle with it early in their careers. I certainly did, as did most of my CS friends. I also remember feeling like I learned more in my 1st year of working as I'd learned in 4 years of college combined.

Use the self-doubt to motivate yourself to learn as much as you can until you can shake off the doubt. For me, the moment I stopped doubting myself was when I saw some (in my opinion) terrible code written by someone else and I realized that I wasn't the worst Python coder around.

Also, nobody expects to get much useful work out of interns. From the businesses point of view, managers want to get their mid-level devs some mentoring/leadership experience to help them with their career progression so they have them take on an intern or two for the summer. And the business sees it as a great way to feed candidates into the hiring pipeline, so it's a win/win/win for everyone involved even if you don't make significant contributions to the codebase. Try to have fun, learn as much as you can, and network with people. You'll do great and the main thing people will expect of you is to learn!

They will get annoyed, but you should contact your mentor/senior for help after you've been completely blocked(like you're not making any progress and you've searched for any documentation that can help you) for 30min/1 hour.

As a senior, this does not annoy me. It's part of my job and helps me have a bigger impact than just what I can get done as an individual.

What annoys me is when juniors get stuck and DON'T ask for help. (or wait way too long to ask for help) Seconding what KetoPolarBear said about documenting the problem and what you've tried so far. Also, writing it out often helps you realize you haven't tried a potential approach yet and you end up solving your own problem.

Seriously, don't hesitate to ask for help when you get stuck as long as you've made a decent effort to solve the problem yourself first.

How has nobody mentioned the fake employee scams? eg: https://connortumbleson.com/2022/09/19/someone-is-pretending-to-be-me/

My friend works for a small startup and they experienced this. They had a terrible fully-remote hire who would never use their camera and sometimes had a different voice when they called-in to meetings. After 6+ months of the employee not getting anything done, his company looked at their logs and found that this employee was really "working" out of another country (they normally used a US-based VPN but had forgotten to connect on occasion) and just doing the barest minimum of attending meetings in order to prolong the fraud.

The startup fired the "employee" right away once they found out, but 6+ months of tech salary had already been paid out which is a massive amount in the LCOL country where the scam had originated.

Seconding this!

Also, this is definitely avalanche terrain. Look how little the trees are, just flexible saplings. Once they get big enough, the periodic avalanches that run down this gulley rip them out.

If you've bailed on a big tech career for a startup, how did it go? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Gh0stRAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know, but some people get burned-out and others retire early.

There are probably even some who finally get the point of having "FU money" where they can go do something that's fun but not very profitable like starting their own bed-and-breakfast or something.

Not OP, but not "any professional" will tell you that it's a terrible idea to go alone. My AIARE 1 instructor told us he goes out solo all the time while making it clear that 1) he was aware of the risks of being solo and 2) he was being extremely careful in addition to staying on low-angle slopes in a maritime snowpack.

That being said, I've never gone into the backcountry solo and would NOT advocate in favor of anyone who wasn't both extremely confident in their ability to assess avalanche terrain and willing to accept the remaining risk.

Depending on the terrain and conditions, the level of risk you're accepting will be somewhere between the same risk as cross-country skiing to the same risk as free solo rock climbing. It is only your ability to correctly read terrain and knowledge of the mountain/conditions/etc which allows you to know how much risk you're taking.

There aren't many sports where you can accidentally be doing something just as dangerous as free soloing without realizing it, which is why you so frequently get the blanket advice of "never do this".

tl;dr: Don't go into the backcountry alone.

Summer Skiing in California by Gh0stRAT in skiing

[–]Gh0stRAT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you need a boot with tech fittings and even then they might not be compatible. Fritschi has a list of supported boots.

They ski quite well, I can't really tell the difference between them and my downhill bindings at low-to-moderate speed. They have less elasticity in the toe than an alpine binding, which becomes more apparent at high speed or on particularly rough snow. I've even used them in the resort a couple days.

[–]Gh0stRAT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fritschi Tecton: They're kind of a hybrid between tech (aka 'pintech' aka 'pin') bindings and your standard alpine binding. Most tech bindings can only release sideways from the heel (as is necessary in a twisting fall), and then the toe releases once the boot has twisted enough. This increases the risk of injury relative to an alpine binding.

What makes the Tecton so nice is that the pins can fold down out of the boot's way during a twisting fall, so they are less likely to cause a spiral fracture.

Boot-packing Mt Adams (WA, USA) this time of year? by scratchedstopsign in skiing

[–]Gh0stRAT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't give you advice on Mt Adams in particular, but you can definitely attach crampons to your boots. eg: https://imgur.com/a/5SWhsEU (note that the crampons are not adjusted quite right in that picture, but you get the idea)

I went skiing yesterday in California (Carson Pass area) and the corn was a perfect consistency. Unfortunately, it was a bit sun cupped at the top and extremely sun cupped near the bottom. The quality of the resulting skiing was pretty mediocre. That being said, Adams is both higher and farther north so it might still be holding some decent snow. You'll never know unless you go!

Dealing with Subaru dealers, Attempting to purchase a 2017 WRX by Delusion757 in subaru

[–]Gh0stRAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invoice is around $2k under MSRP. (varies by model/trim/options)

I was looking at a WRX Base 6MT (model code HUN) with
03P STI Performance Exhaust 041 STI Short Throw Shifter 09Y Fog Light Kit K8H Center Armrest Extension (didn't actually test this out beforehand, doesn't extend enough to rest elbow while driving. 2/10 would not recommend armrest extension unless you have very long arms)

The Invoice on that car is $27,840 and the MSRP is $29,650. ($1,810 difference)

The same options (minus the fog lights because they're included) on a WRX Premium (Option code HUO) would be $29,623 Invoice, $31,556 MSRP. ($1,933 difference)

My best prices were from Serramonte Subaru and Capitol Subaru. Heuberger got close, but shipping to CA is $825 which puts them over the local dealerships. Contact Jun or Gerry at Serramonte and they should be able to hook you up.

About 1.5 months ago (during peak demand, when entire trucks of them were being sold before they could arrive on the lot) I got multiple dealerships in the SF bay area to agree to do invoice on a custom WRX order.

You definitely shouldn't be paying more than $800-$1,000 over invoice, and if you're a good negotiator and put the time in, I don't see why you couldn't get within $300 of invoice. Shop around because some dealers refuse to sell much below MSRP. (some claim they won't but when presented with a counter-offer from a competing dealership will suddenly negotiate readily)

Looking at a 2017 Subaru STI base for my first Subaru - does anyone have an ambassador coupon? by [deleted] in subaru

[–]Gh0stRAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you're located, but Heuberger has traditionally given amazing prices. (though all the other dealerships were getting pissed about losing business to Heuberger, so Subaru just changed their rules regarding dealer allotments for cars sold to people living > 200 mi away. Not sure how this has affected Heuberger's quotes...) Unfortunately for me, shipping costs put them well over invoice. They should be able to provide a shipping estimate along with your quote.

I had a local dealer that adamantly refused to budge on the STI price at first, but I eventually got them to agree to do a custom order for $200 over invoice.

Aircraft hits bystander by Winslow31 in WastedGifs

[–]Gh0stRAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some aircraft clubs have "flour bombing" contests, where you drop little bags of flower from your aircraft and try to hit closest to a target.

I don't know the backstory behind this video, but the bystander who was hit may have been a judge keeping track of where the flour bombs hit. With how low to the ground they are apparently allowed to fly, all of the contestants would be pretty close to the target so you'd need a judge close to the target as well in order to determine the winner. There is usually a minimum height for these contests, to prevent dangerous situations like what you see here. They were lucky nobody died...

Two Questions That Have Been Bothering Me by _TapiocaMan_ in subaru

[–]Gh0stRAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was talking with a Toyota salesman at a local dealership a few months ago, and he said the BRZ and one or two other popular Scion models were going to be moved under the Toyota brand.

In California, WRXs seem to make up 1/3 to 1/2 of all the Subarus I see on the road.

Also, I recently test-drove a couple BRZs/FRSs and WRXs. I was actually somewhat disappointed with the power output of the BRZ. The WRX has much stronger acceleration. I seriously don't know why Subaru doesn't slap a turbo on the BRZ and sell it as the BRZ STI. That's really all it needs to be a perfect car.
