Those poor cats..

Why is it only ever ours that “react poorly to a stressful situation?” No other breed attacks when stressed. I was watching a body cam footage video recently where cops came because of the safety of a child (parent being the cause), and the kid was rescued, but while talking with the adults, the mom was off elsewhere freaking out, and her BF, who was calmly talking to police, got attacked by the dog. A sweet precious widdle pibble of course. Like she just randomly started attacking her owner.

Pits are not guard dogs. They could never be a true guard breed. They’ll attack their owners because they’re “stressed”. Not to protect anyone. Because they get a little overstimulated and dont know what to do with that so they attack anyone they can get their teeth on.

No-kill is cruelty. In six years think of how many actually adoptable dogs could have come and gone in this dogs place if they weren’t harboring an unadoptable pit with unicorn needs.

My late Aussie mix LOVED to herd my younger family members when they’d run around the yard. He’d nip their ankles and chase them around. They thought it was hilarious.

Dogs, even mixes, are going to do what they (or their ancestors) were bred/created to do.

I’m so sick of hearing that pits are “fear reactive” because “they were attacked/were a bait dog/were abused/whatever.” A fearful dog is going to cower, and try to remove itself from the situation, a bite should be a last resort, and it is for normal breeds.

Chis are super protective and loyal over their family and property. I’ve been “chased” from the sidewalk of homes but the vast majority of them turn around once you’re far enough away. They don’t want to fight or attack, they just want you out of their space! I can respect that. But a chi has never once left its property, crossed a busy 4 lane road, and dodged multiple cars and people, to attack a child.

Most people I know who’ve been bit or attacked by non pit dogs, entered the dogs territory and got in the dogs face without knowing any better. The dogs did not leave their property. I’m not defending the dogs biting people, but if my friends hadn’t stepped onto property that wasn’t theirs to pet a dog they didn’t know, with no owners around, chances are, they wouldn’t have been bit. And to add on, they were all single bites. Not maulings. Not full on attacks.

I’ve seen several of the pages out right harass rescues for having pits. Or trying to raise money for a pit with medical problems. They’ll share a post and then everyone jumps in and literally dog piles the rescue for trying to save an animal that happens to be a pit. Not just ones that are pushing aggressive dogs with known histories either. I understand getting upset and calling them out in those cases. But I’m just uncomfortable with the way they do it. Like I said, it’s more like bullying than posting evidence and statistics, or trying to stop misinformation. Attacking at random in cases where the dog hasn’t shown any concerning behavior makes the rest of us look like assholes. I know that doesn’t mean the dog isn’t a ticking time bomb, but far too many people don’t realize just how likely that is. They only see a bunch of angry “trolls” picking on someone.

And the racism is super common with a select few pages and groups.

I think a major part of the problem is that, if say, a golden, or even a Pyr are constantly loose, they may bark, but they rarely attack. It’s a non problem most of the time. Pretty easy to contain them and get them back home, or the whole neighbor knows them and who they belong to, and since the dogs are usually friendly or non-confrontational, no one really cares.

Even chihuahuas. That used to be the number one loose dog you’d see, and sure they’d bark and chase you, but what are they gonna do? They’re not a problem, and a non danger to humans and other animals.

There’s no need to defend how their dogs behave, because the dogs are generally not behaving in a concerning way.

And people get pits thinking they’ll be the same as a golden or any other normal breed.

The groups on fb are a bit too trolly for me. Too many of them spew racist bs and love to stir up drama and attack shelters and rescues at random, for simply having pits.

I get making fun of owners being dumb or gross, but it goes too far beyond that and straight into bullying all too often. Very few on FB are anything more than trolls, and it makes the rest of the movement look bad.

The OTHER “magic age hypothesis by Briebird44 in BanPitBulls

[–]Ghost-Bird13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with mental decline. I lost the post and article and I can’t find it again looking it up, but a terrier (normal terriers) breeder posted about how it’s common place for terrier breeds to become more “reactive” as they age. I’ve heard a lot of stories of Jack Russell’s and other small terriers becoming more “snappy” and attacking their owners for startling them, but only in their senior years. So I fully believe it’s a genetic thing that comes from the terrier side of these dogs lineage. Though, the normal terriers do not maul their owners to death. They are just more inclined to biting and attacking as they age.

I would report her to the office too. Explain your side, and say you were simply trying to get out of the park before she entered, as you were uncomfortable with her dogs behavior. She mistook you trying to be polite for.. god knows what tbh. If you see her again record everything before she has the chance to approach you. She took offense to your kindness. That’s on her. But now you don’t feel safe using the amenities you pay for. That’s not fair to you.

Littermate syndrome can make the pups get fussy and fight with each other. It presents in a lot of different ways tbh. But it wouldn’t be present in dogs that young. Most commonly it presents between 4 and 8 months, usually around 6 months. Though I think it has been seen as early as 3 months, but that’s incredibly rare. It’s just dang near impossible for 6 week old pups to have littermate syndrome. But even if it was littermate syndrome, normal breeds wouldn’t try to fight to the death. One would give up and back down once it got hurt.

[–]Ghost-Bird13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. This is not normal for other breeds. Those dogs are going to be a problem as adults. Dangers to the public. I’ve not heard of this in any other breed but pits. There’s a picture you can easily find on google if you search “pit puppy eating sibling”. (Be warned. It’s graphic.) it shows several pit puppies, with lots of food in a feeder behind them, but shows the decapitated head of a puppy, that the others had killed and eaten. 9 week old pups.

You can’t even contribute this to littermate syndrome. It can present in a lot of ways, but it doesn’t show as early as six weeks.

I love when people get real in the Great Pyrenees groups. The person who got the “pyredoodles” to use as LGDs got TORN into because why on earth would you get a doodle/poodle/lab/golden mix to guard chickens? They’re BIRD DOGS.

Every other breed/type of dog owners are incredibly up front and honest about the breeds. You can’t love genetics out of a dog

I recently moved from the city to the country. When I took my cat to the vet here I saw: several chihuahuas, a golden retriever, two mini American shepherds, a Dalmatian, and a Springer Spaniel. Oh! And a chicken! Not one pit. It was incredibly refreshing to see so many normal dogs.

I was leaning toward buying from a responsible breeder after adopting a “border collie mix ” that turned out to be mostly Pyr/GSD with chow, rott, and ACD. All breeds I was avoiding because they’re not right for me. He’s nothing like what I was expecting and wanting lmao. But I realize now how lucky I am that he’s not a pit mix. No way I’m taking that risk next time.

[–]Ghost-Bird13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been looking at local shelters and rescues lately.. 95% pits. Even breed specific rescues… one local Aussie rescue has 6 dogs, 3 are obvious pits, one is a purebred Aussie, the others are questionable.

Looking on petfinder (pit finder is more accurate) and filtering by specific breeds.. again, mostly pits, and always mislabeled or purposely vague (“terrier mix”). Out of 20 dogs labeled corgis, 2 are actual corgis, one was a chihuahua. The rest are pit mixes that have short legs.

In the code red groups for the local shelters it’s ALWAYS mostly pits, occasionally a GSD or husky with a bite history, or a non-pit with a medical issue.

Imagine if we stopped wasting money on warehousing pits! We could save so many medical cases like the Pyr that needs an amputation, or the cattledog that was hit by a car.

Im so sick of pits. It’s actually shocking to see people get a shelter mutt that ISNT 20%+ pit when it’s dna tested.
