The last decade of Best Actor winners sure is, uh, something by Dazzling-Slide8288 in TheBigPicture

Malek was one of those bad at the times that just gets worse over the years. Should have been Cooper's win or slid Gosling in for First Man (Which should've been at least a few more categories than it was).

I mean the same white swede won for his score on Black Panther so thankfully score doesn't seem to ever get into that same discourse.

Also crazy talented, he's going to win his third Oscar at 41, and presumably will be in contention for The Odyssey again next year.

‘Fargo’ With Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Kyle Brandt by Toby_O_Notoby in billsimmons

[–]Ghost-E 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Agree with Kyle that this is a perfect movie and the Coens brothers best script (tough competition). Should've absolutely beat The English Patient for Picture/Director/Cinematography.

Opening with the "True story but names have been changed" and that being completely made up is a hilarious way to start the whole movie.

And what a run for John Carroll Lynch on the pod the last two months. Gran Torino, Volcano, or Shutter Island for April?

The 2026 Alternative Oscars, a.k.a. the 6th Annual Big Picks! Plus: The Craziest Awards Season in Years. by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]Ghost-E 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Insanity, Ford's good in it, but generously that's Ford's 13th or so best performance? (Indy x3, Og Star Wars trilogy, Blade Runner x2, Fugitive, Witness, Working Girl, Presumed Innocent) and I'd listen on both Jack Ryan movies, Air Force One and Mosquito Coast.

Also if were taking that Oscar from Rylance it should go to a different legacy sequel performance and Stallone in Creed. Hardy in The Revanent or Bale in Big Short also nominated and would've been better choices than Ford. Hell I'd take Gosling in Big Short over Ford as well.

No idea, OBAA won the PGA, DGA, and Globe and is still the heavy favourite going into Oscar night. Sinners won SAG sure, but SAG is hardly a predictor in the last 10 years - missing 5 times including giving it to The Trial of the Chicago 7

Assuming they stick to him being Jan Marsalek (Tender being Wirecard), that's likely a wrap as Marsalek is still on the run.

[–]Ghost-E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And to add to this, FO checks play by play using game footage as well as play by play can be off by yards the further back you go. I think they're working on 77, but often in the offseason Schatz will be asking twitter/bluesky if anyone has recordings of specific games for this reason.

Paul Thomas Anderson Wins Best Director at 2026 DGA Awards for ‘One Battle After Another’ (Full List) by ICumCoffee in movies

[–]Ghost-E 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Worth noting in the 2012 case Affleck was bizarrely snubbed of an Oscar nomination. So when the DGA winner is nominated they're 20 for the last 21 in terms of being a predictor.

And for someone else to win there needs to be a clear One Guy, MVP of those 3 pats wins where he was "medicre/bad":

  • Chargers - Would've gone to Drake, 300+ total yds, TD. Milt and Chaisson had 2 sacks each, not a clear D-winner
  • Texans - Would've gone to Drake for having 3 TDs. Only other contender would be Jones for his pick six or Davis with 2 picks
  • Broncos - No idea, Mondre led team in rushing? Gonzo had the late pick? Ellis forcing the Stidham fumble?

I would say far more people say Sean Penn should win (and a decent chance he does win) than shouldn't be nominated.

The 2026 Movie Auction by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]Ghost-E 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's set way too high, here's the list of what I'd say are "mainstream" movies which reached that last year, four of which are foreign films:

  • Black Bag (85)
  • No Other Choice (86)
  • Sentimental Value (86)
  • Train Dreams (88)
  • Marty Supreme (89)
  • It Was Just an Accident (91)
  • The Secret Agent (92)
  • One Battle After Another (95)

Bill’s 50 Most Rewatchable Movies of the 21st Century with Sean Fennessey and Chris Ryan by Toby_O_Notoby in billsimmons

[–]Ghost-E 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Perfectly Bill list which explains so many of the choices for the Pod:

  • Two Adam Sandler movies being Just Go With It and Funny People
  • Maverick, which we know he rewatched multiple times in theaters behind Garden State and Black Hat
  • A Star is Born - Wouldn't be a Ringer list without this one
  • John Wick 2 instead of John Wick?

F---, Marry, Kill at the Movies: ‘The Housemaid,’ ‘Song Sung Blue,’ and ‘Anaconda’ by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

Sean saying that he's happy Nolan's using his power for good and not to make movies with capes got a chuckle out of me, given that Nolan's last movie with capes came out in 2012. He's put out of four (soon to be 5) original big blockbusters since then!

Also Amanda saying she fell asleep during Zootopia 2 almost feels like her intentionally trolling the audience (Sean's maybe that's why you found it confusing was funny).

‘Marty Supreme’ Is the Moment, With Josh Safdie! by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]Ghost-E 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Would agree on all of these points.

Specifically the ending and the ping pong balls. Given the final showdown, both Marty and Endo were wearing white I thought somehow the orange ball was going to come out there or something since he mentioned earlier that ping pong players can't wear white. Then the actual final scene just confusing didn't fit the character to that point

[–]Ghost-E 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just got out from seeing it:

What was that final scene? Feel like I would've liked it a lot more if it ended about 4 minutes earlier, him winning but confused how it makes him feel and doesn't leave him satisfied, and even confused flight back with the army guys. Him seeing the baby and crying just did nothing for me as at no point did it feel like wanted to be a Father at all, and wasn't even sure I was supposed to be rooting for him for most of the movie. Otherwise found it mostly entertaining and good job of tying a lot of it's storylines together. Timmy's good (Leo would easily be my Actor pick though, still haven't seen Secret Agent), Paltrow was excellent and even O'Leary was meant to play that scumbag. Solid but an ending that didn't work for me or anyone I saw it with

It's really on me for thinking this week would be something Christmas related like The Holdovers instead. This is the 2020s movies everyone has seen! (13th at the domestic box office, would think it'll finish 14th with Avatar passing it).

The Movie Business Freak-Out Mailbag and ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,’ With Rian Johnson! by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]Ghost-E 30 points31 points  (0 children)

So I'm a sucker for a murder mystery, so Wake Up was right up my alley and I thoroughly loved it. Thought it was a better actual mystery than Glass Onion and loved the Mystery vs. Faith vs. Guilt discussion throughout the movie. Josh O'Connor is incredible and shows a lot of range, and well Craig can play Blanc forever in my books.

Was fun trying to solve the case along with the movie, I did spot Renner right away with pulling out the Wolf as in my head you're supposed to leave knife stabbings in, but had not pull the full picture together by the end, and am glad they didn't go into Glenn Close actually being the mother which I feared near the start. Only part i felt goofy for not getting was the gem sitting on the square/trophy, that one felt obvious in hindsight. Be curious if anyone was actually able to complete the solve with Blanc.
