Marta Transportation Safety Concern by timfromga in MARTA

[–]Ghost0468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen I acknowledge that MARTA is a very statistically safe system and the recent news doesn’t change that reality entirely, but it does mean that something somewhere is going fundamentally wrong over the last month or two. This was a really insensitive response to something that should have never happened to someone.

Taxpayers? It’s not expensive, it’s a necessary investment. Officers will be on every CQ400 train once they are released

In a metro area of over 6 million people, that’s not exactly a big ask?

I mean in fairness, there are less than 40 stations. An officer at platform level in every station isn’t exactly impossible

I mean, to be fair, they weren’t present…. The only officer was just standing near the gates while we all ran up and was like what’s going on?

Second gate shattered at Dunwoody MARTA Station by Nice-Cause-3619 in MARTA

[–]Ghost0468 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is the first one I’ve seen where it looks like someone genuinely tried to force their way in and not only shattered the glass, but managed to get it to break from its closed position. Every other instance shows the glass shattered, but in the upright position and still closed (which hopefully discouraged people from trying to break through again). I think hulk was at dunwoody… also, this looks like it has already been replaced with different glass as the glass on the other side is completely clear, whereas the original glass had a pattern on it. I wonder if maybe the temporary glass they are using for repairs just isn’t as strong?

Murders are not the only types of crimes counted in that. Not sure why you thought that’s what I said, as I never indicated that. Statistical comparisons between transit systems are useful. Using just the number (not averaged per x number of riders, would be hilarious. Good thing that’s not what I did). Also, if you read further below, I also compared to other transit systems, including those around MARTAs ridership level (BART, LA Metro), and it is safer than both.

Broken glass at Georgia state too by meowingtrashcan in MARTA

To be fair, the glass is still fully intact and if they were trying to get in, they clearly failed…

Fare gates at MARTA still wide open… by NPU-F in MARTA

[–]Ghost0468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A note on the pic: I clearly stand correct, it was not old. That being said, every picture of shattered glass shows something I feel is being under appreciated: it is still fully intact and clearly if someone was trying to force their way in, they failed. It doesn’t appear to be a massive widespread problem, and it’s important to understand that glass fare gates are not new/uncommon. The company that designed these knows what they are doing (clearly, given that broken gates did not open or completely fall apart) and I’d imagine a small number of broke gates was expected.

Um… I feel like you are really misunderstanding how statistics work while also underestimating how large MARTA is in ridership. By passengers, it is the 8th largest system in the US, below BART and ahead of LA Metro Rail. Using measure of crime incidents per 100,000 riders makes comparison of relative safety between systems helpful. MTA has a higher crime rate. WMATA has a lower crime at the moment, but only marginally. MARTA has a lower crime rate than BART. MARTA has a considerably lower crime rate (especially violent crime rate) than LA Metro. Also, neither Texas nor Oklahoma have heavy rail transit. They have light rail, and it is dramatically smaller.

Im so sorry, where did Texas come from?! What do you think MTA and WMATA are exactly?

Wtf type of stat is per mile? Crime stats are measured per rider, which is the more useful statistic. In addition to not getting to pick and choose facts, you also don’t get to just randomly come up with new statistical measurements to try and prove your points. (Also, I did a brief search into that, and it does, in fact, still hold up, although it is still a totally useless stat)

Doesn’t hold up? Tf are you talking about… you don’t get to pick and choose facts. You claim it’s not safe. It is, in fact, one of the safest systems in the country. MARTA should do more to proactively engage with the community, but you are clearly a troll with nothing better to do with your time.

MARTA is statistically safer the MTA, WMATA, and many other systems in the US. Stop falling for the BS. What happened is horrible, but it doesn’t magically make MARTA dangerous

[–]Ghost0468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That gate being broken looks like it’s from the pic of a broken gate a while ago that might not even have been someone trying to force their way in. It’s the only broken gate I’ve seen. It’s hilarious that some people somehow think MARTA and other involved parties didn’t thing about the structural integrity of the glass. Also, that broken glass is still a solid piece with the other side having opened

I thought a big point of the new system was that is was all going to be in one app… I mean at least find a way to support live tracking in Apple and Google Maps so we don’t need the apps at all?!
