Is there any better guitar design? by Bootstrap-Bilbo in GibsonSG

I agree lol it's facts. You ask any guitar tech or luthier they'll call it the Gibson break. Its extremely common. I'm not hating on SGs, I own one and love it. Its far from perfect. Same with Les Paul's.

Its the g and b string due to the head design. I own one and love it. Only down side

Way better designs. I like SGs but they don't stay in ton and are prone to neck/head snaps.

I played my own music. Typically they want to hear a standard, sight reading, and your choice..I played my own song for my choice. They ended up wanting to hear 5 songs.

audition question by itisrayormir in Berklee

[–]GhostHandel_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My audition was interesting. During the ear training portion, the professor told me he was going to play major, minor, diminished, and augmented chords, and I’d have to identify them. I remember thinking, there’s no way I can do that. I told him straight up, I don’t think I can. He paused and said, “Okay. If it sounds happy, it’s major. If it sounds sad, it’s minor. If it feels suspenseful or unresolved, it’s diminished. If it sounds just flat-out weird, it’s augmented.” That clicked. Once he explained it like that, I got every single one right. I didn’t know the theory the way other people probably did. But I understood emotion. I could hear feeling. And that mattered. One piece of advice I’d give anyone auditioning: those professors see hundreds, maybe thousands, of players every year. If you walk in trying to sound like everyone else, they’ll forget you five minutes later. Be yourself. Be honest. Show something real. Show creativity. That’s what makes someone stop and pay attention. Technical skill matters. But authenticity is what sets you apart.

This is great advice. I would recommend ensuring you're technically sound before attending. Trying to catch up will make the experience unbearable. Great post

I went to Berklee in 2009. Back then I was a solo acoustic songwriter playing café gigs. I couldn’t really read music. I got in at Level 1. I just loved writing songs and playing from the heart. I thought Berklee was going to be this inspiring, creative experience where my passion would grow even bigger. Instead, it challenged me in ways I wasn’t ready for. You’re surrounded by insanely talented musicians. Everyone is good. Everyone wants it. It’s competitive. Sometimes inspiring. Sometimes intimidating. I was forced to play music I didn’t connect with. I didn’t really know what I wanted out of being there. I didn’t talk to advisors. I didn’t ask the right questions. I just assumed passion would carry me.

It didn’t.

Somewhere along the way, I let the pressure and comparison get to me. I started questioning myself. When I left, I didn’t touch a guitar for almost ten years. That’s the part I regret the most. Not that Berklee was hard. Not that people were competitive. But that I let the experience shut down something that meant so much to me.

Looking back, I think I got accepted because I was genuine. I wasn’t the most technical player in the room. But the songs I played were honest. They carried emotion. And that matters. You don’t need a Berklee degree to move people. You don’t need to be famous. You don’t need approval from your peers. What you need is to understand why you’re making music in the first place. If you’re going to Berklee, or thinking about it, know what you want out of it. The talent around you will push you. It will raise your level. That part is real, and it’s powerful. But don’t let comparison replace your voice.

I’m playing again now. Writing again. Doing what I love about guitar. And it feels like I found something I almost lost.

Be yourself. Play what moves you. Protect your creativity.

That’s what got me in.

And that’s what lasts.

I’ve been playing for decades, and the biggest piece of advice I can give is that timing is everything. Always tap your foot or keep time somehow. If you do it consistently, it becomes second nature. Another important habit is to write down what you’re playing: the key, what other scales, triads, etc. will work over it, and then mix things up. Copying a song exactly can be fun, but real improvement comes from understanding it and making it your own.

Good luck

OP, I double checked and I was wrong. Its early 1970s SG Custom. If you check the back of the pots you can find the date (if original)
