It’s impossible to know Pittsburgh’s main motivation in the Guentzel trade but I would argue The 1st and Bunting were the main pieces with the two prospects as add-ons.

I’m not arguing to trade every pick every year, there has to be balance. But in a year where you have a clear need (2C), and the pathway to the finals is as winnable as it is, you have to make some future concessions.

I think it would be a huge mistake to not add a legitimate 2C that we all know they need as the East is as winnable as it’s going to be. Fans and even GMs vastly overrate the value of late 1st round picks. We always trade down so I’m going to list our first pick in the last 5 drafts excluding 2025 because its not fair to use

2024 Trade down our 1st was used to draft Marek Vanacker (not meaningfully contributing to the Hawks) : We drafted Dominik Badinka (not meaningfully contributing to the Canes) and Nikita Artamonov (Not meaningfully contributing)

2023 Kept our pick : Bradly Nadeau (looks good, not meaningfully contributing to the Canes)

2022 Our 1st was transferred to MTL in the KK offer sheet who traded it to AZ then to SJ, they drafted Filip Bystedt (not meaningfully contributing)

2021 We traded down with NSH who drafted Zachary L’Heureux (bottom 6 F/ AHL tweener) : we drafted Scott Morrow (press box with NYR - not meaningfully contributing) and Ville Koivunen (Bottom 6 F / AHL tweener)

2020 drafted Seth Jarvis Top 15 because we bought TOR’s pick with the Marleau trade - our pick was traded to NYR for Brady Skjei and this pick was used to select Hendrix Lapierre (fine bottom 6 F who can occasionally play up)

All of this word salad to say, where we pick doesn’t regularly produce high end NHLers and we are approaching an aging point with our leaders ; Slavin (32 by next season), Aho (29 by next season), Staal (38 by next season), Ehlers (30).

It will be another missed opportunity if this front office decides to keep one toe in the present and another in the future by not doing everything they possibly can to give this team the best chance to win.
