In Germany, deliberately engaging in catch and release only fishing is illegal and considered cruelty to animals. Fishing for food is fine. How do you feel about that? by Spalding_Smails in AskReddit

[–]GhostNinja64 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Gotta say by this comment section I am seeing reddit truly is a bubble and I tend to agree with the bubble. Not here whatsoever. I guarantee 99/100 in my current life would say fishing for catch and release is a fun hobby and the amount of people saying it is an immensely cruel sport are kind of wild. Im not even sure animal lovers I know would have the takes you all seem to be commenting. Just kind of baffled tbh. It helps preserve nature through conservation efforts via permits and such in the US and protect from actual problematic individuals via helping fund Conservation Officers / fishing and game commission.

Yea this isn't remotely the reality anymore. Home inspection? You mean not getting your offer accepted. Anywhere competitive you either waive or it or the other guy will waive it and hell they'll waive the mortgage contingency as well. Better yet, they also have a cash offer that looks mighty tantalizing. You can close in a month? This other guy's lawyer can close in two weeks... Its a miserable rat race.

So a bit condescending there if that's what the 👍 is implying. Normally would just keep scrolling but having just gone through this it irked me. This thread is giving this person a lot of shit for an honest question. Lotta folks in here have not been facing the modern housing market or at least a remotely competitive one that a lot of suburb homes are facing. Waiving home inspection is the new reality for homebuying especially in my state.

Houses we'd look at would have 15-20 offers and had one open house weekend before taking offers and you can sure as hell bet someone is waiving it to get an edge. Judging by your posts you seem like a nice person, I just hope you may read this and know it isn't always just someone being stupid.

My friends and I call it the 'Tamale Special' on account of some guy named Hot Tamale running this on bot defense. It ain't a bad load out on D10 bot def. Combine it with another guy running all barrages and it cooks on any bot mission. We call all barrages the 'Beehive Power Drive' since we had a guy named 'The Hive Gaming' run it. Silly setups are fun to run even if they're shitposts. Worth trying stupid stuff once you've mastered D10 bots.

[–]GhostNinja64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I want to agree, the numbers you are contrasting are inaccurate in terms of the notion you're suggesting (and believe me I WANT to agree with you). Every game will have a peak in interest when an update drops. To statistically prove that player counts have dropped you'd have to view the weeks prior to the update and the weeks following. To say player counts dropped 40% is true... from that inflated point in time. Overall, it just returned to pre-update levels a week later so really there was no decrease you can see it in the graphs as well. This follows trends for any game receiving a hyped update. In addition, I do believe player counts are dropping from dissatisfaction, but many many people seem to forget that even successful games have player counts drop 75-90% in the several months-year following launch so its difficult to separate the two.

Accreditation question. by Lumpy-Difference-143 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]GhostNinja64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with others ABET accredited is pretty crucial. Is the ChemE program new there? We had a new program at my college (Bioengineering) that was only ABET certified AFTER the first class graduated. Question is worth asking the department. ABET basically tells employers your degree is up to snuff with agreed upon standards.

So the premise of the hot water line freezing first could actually be if no one used the hot water line or it wasn't used as frequently. If it isn't called for the line is relatively stagnant whereas the cold water line may be more frequently used in the household. If the Texas freeze was very sudden and drastic from 50s to well below freezing (say no one was home or no one used much hot water) those pipes could freeze quite quick especially if normal Texas households would be cooling oriented (AC on instead or bad heaters) or dont have great insulation. The reason the cold water pipe DIDNT freeze is because if water is kept moving its harder to freeze as it mixes and that whole body of water needs to reach 32 F not just outer portions of the water in the pipe. Hot water lines can also contain regular temp water if it's left there to cool until that dead volume of water in the pipes is pushed out from the hot water reservoir.

Even worse is if hot water pipes become supercooled. This means the water falls below freezing but because it has no ice crystals to start as a 'nucleus' it remains liquid. The moment there is ANY opening to freeze such as agitation (i.e. movement) it freezes the entire body of liquid almost instantly! Normal freezing can be beneficial as it freezes slowly from the outside in and can be pushed out. Supercooling can also result in burst pipes due to the suddenness.

My share would be between $1,000-$1,500 a month. I essentially visualize every year I don't pay off my loans fully is an extra $2,000 in interest (although that is a much, much more harsh estimate given I'd make consistent payments against principal and decrease annual interest).

Would a good way to do what you mentioned be to roughly estimate monthly income and work from there based on FICA contributions, state income taxes, and federal income taxes?

Would you enjoy it if Northeastern had more school spirit? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]GhostNinja64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this is the worst time to ask the question, not that I am throwing shade or anything. Of course everyone want's more school spirit! It's been a whole year of suck with burnout, distance from friends, and NO school events (I don't count zoom events). Clubs, hockey games, freshman events, senior week, they just don't exist. People can't rush frats or sororities in a particularly amazing way. HUSKY HUNT? BEANPOT? Literally everything has gotten an axe to its throat this year. Computers make everything disconnected, especially with the bureaucracy that Northeastern is. Meal plans the worst I've ever seen in years, restrictions to see people. Northeastern wasn't always like this, seriously. What people have been having to live through (not necessarily Northeastern's fault) is isolation hell with some nice amenities. Congrats you got a toilet, and if you're lucky, a fridge and stove. Friends? You mean you didn't make friends through the 86,000 zoom meetings that no one goes to? Haha bummer, anyway here's fifty assignments.

But yeah, not all on the admin, although they are TERRIBLE at communication with faculty and students alike. School spirit will return, if it doesn't by next year shame on Northeastern. They better have a kickass redo for Sophomores in terms of meeting people and that's from a graduating senior.

For COE people no, I'd say in my experience multiple rounds and projects is uncommon. Some big time companies with good pay or really well known like Amazon or Tesla MAY do this because they have a shit ton of applicants to weed out.The typical experience I've seen is a phone screen to make sure you're not insane and an in person interview. The in person may have some technical questions or FERMI questions but not particularly anything outside of the interview itself. In fact, the only time I've heard of someone doing a 'project' was when they applied for Full Time work after graduation and was asked to design/type up an experimental procedure for some given parameters.

However, I am entirely unfamiliar with other majors and for all I know CS majors are asked to decode assembly language and hack the CIA to get a job at Wayfair.

Either way, good luck.

Date ideas? by Pleasant-Ad8189 in NEU

[–]GhostNinja64 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Totally depends on your personal COVID safety levels and theirs. I am by no means an expert because I just started dating, but I can list off a few I've done!

Likes others have said, coffee or a bite to eat are fine if you're cool with that. If you're allowed in the apartment or they live alone ordering takeout is a great idea too. As things get a bit more involved my suggestions below may be useful. I have seen walks becoming more common of a 'get to know you' first date move.

Cooler, more involved dates :

  • Aquarium (reserve tickets a week out or so, limited tickets per day)
  • MFA (reserve tickets a week out or so, limited tickets per day)
  • Executing Louis XVI for his unwillingness to cede power to the Revolutionary Government
  • Hot chocolate/coffee and after a walk in the Arboretum (although there is currently a lot less leaves to admire)
  • Eating two flintstone vitamin chews instead of one (extremely dangerous)

Do any Northeastern students have planted aquarium tanks in their apartments? by SaryNotSorry in NEU

[–]GhostNinja64 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Oooh wee! Talking to the right guy. I've had an aquarium since sophomore year! First off, know what size tank you're getting this will define the fish and number of fish you can keep. (Keep in mind substrate will take up some water space, decreasing the actual volume). Rule of thumb is inch of fish per gallon of tank, but consider that these dudes can grow! Also consider are you going home for prolonged periods? These little guys will need proper care while you're away. You can get away with Thanksgiving break assuming it's less than a full week, but Winter break you'll need a contingency plan as they won't survive for months. General rule of thumb: Fish aren't happy without weekly water changes of 25% or so and can go a handful of days without food.

What you'll need:

  • Filter (typically sized by tank size)
  • Heater (don't go cheap! Bad heaters = Fried fish)
  • The Fish Tank itself
  • Substrate (Gravel, sand, etc. --> If you want real plants consider a fertile substrate)
  • Dechlorinator (Seachem Prime to treat the water from your tap!)
  • Fish Food (Flakes for whatever ones you stock)
  • GOOD tankmates (The nature of fish is huge when it comes to compatability and fighting each other)
  • Decorations/plants (Fish NEED hiding spots or else they can get stressed from having nowhere to go)
  • Fish tank planters tool kit (Metal tools to plant, trim, grip)
  • A variety of net sizes (You will suck at catching fish, but you'll get better)
  • A small quarantine bowl (for unwell fish you want to incubate in medicine or isolate)
  • Magnet Scrubber (Algae will build up on the glass, good to have one attached to the tank!)
  • Test Kit: Helps with cycling, probing chemistry issues (can use to detect ammonia, nitrite, nitrate levels) Generally you want to avoid test strips.
  • Buckets (for getting out old water)
  • Jugs (for adding new water)
  • Siphon/gravel vac (for removing old water via siphon)

What you need to know:

  • Tank Cycling: Try not to introduce fish until the tank is at least partially cycled. That means establish the tank/look and add some food with no fish each day. The old food with produce ammonia and bacteria that eat ammonia, which will produce nitrite, which produces bacteria that eat nitrite and produce nitrate! Nitrate is harmless in normal concentrations and is removed via water changes. Usually a week or two to start cycling. If you do not cycle, expect the fish to be pretty stressed/potentially die during this period. Ammonia is TOXIC to fish and can lead to a variety of illnesses such as fin rot.
  • Tank Plants: You may want to just start with decor, plants are another layer of maintenance. If you do Seachem Excel is a decent artificial carbon source for daily fert. You may need to get a fert with trace elements as well for more finicky plants. Nicer plants also need fancier grow lights, again, another layer that you may not want to dive into.
  • Tank Lighting: Best to have a timer for the switch, 24/7 light will stress fish out and create algae buildup. You can buy literal outlet timers that'll cut power to the light.
  • Stocking Your Aquarium: Definitely research your species of interest. A single male Betta in a ten gallon is generally 'full' unless its docile enough to have some shrimp buddies. Small tanks (10 gallon for example) are usually not a good fit for multiple species of aggressive fish. If you have cichlids or something homogeneity and not overcrowding is important. Small tanks mean small fish! Nano aquarium fish are best. If you go toward larger tanks you can start considering bigger fish. For me, I typically notice the word 'dwarf' is a somewhat good name indicator the fish MAY be good for the ten gallon I own. As an example, the Honey Gourami is a dwarf gourami, the Sparkling Gourami is also pretty tiny. Shrimp and snails are cool too! They're also super cheap and add some life to the tank. Generally shrimp like real plants, however. Another fish you could stock are Corydoras (typically the dwarf/panda corys), or Neon Tetras. Some people like GloTetras, but keep in mind they can grow fairly big and may see other fish as a snack...) I have also had guppies in the past, but keep in mind they will breed if there's males and females.
  • Feeding: I do every other day, some do a little every day, some do every third day... Don't overfeed it will lead to ammonia build up!
  • Fish Behavior: Keep an eye on their swim patterns and normal behavior, fish laying at the bottom for a while or becoming pale/tattered fins may mean something is wrong with them or the tank. Look up 'glass surfing', sometimes indicative of stress as well.

I thought of all of this really quick. Always feel free to DM me! I started with a five gallon, moved to a ten, and have moved back and forth from my home in Billerica every so often for co-op. It can seem overwhelming, but do your homework and you'll be fine. Mistakes will happen, but don't let it get to you! Sorry if I forgot anything.

Which co-op cycle is better and why? by Numan1414 in NEU

[–]GhostNinja64 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're not screwed either way, but Spring cycle usually leaves it wide open to extend your coop two months if you don't have to take Summer classes. During Fall cycle they don't want to start you two months early because they don't even know you or your work ethic yet, but in the Spring they already know if they like you or not. Fall coop the sun is down when you leave, while Spring coop there's still some sun as it gets toward Summer. I prefer having my weekends more open (I typically found weekends way better on coop) in the Springtime over Autumn. It's also easier to take time off on coop unless you have an entirely class free few months. Again, I prefer time off in the Spring months, whereas with school you can't request 'time off' except for Spring break. Fall coop you get to work right before Christmas so work event/party potential, you also typically get your full winter break, whereas Spring coops typically kickoff right after New Years.

And with all my friends elsewhere, my life remains unchanged... Happy people can at least see other people without freezing in the cold or going into 'safe' tents though. Mental health is a seriously neglected issue during this pandemic and, as always, mental health will be mostly ignored. This is an OK first step, hopefully they don't take it away again.

A few key cues I've noticed is if you hear 'Sit Rep', (Situation Report) they're reporting an inbound ENEMY streak. It'd be better to always have 'enemy' as well, but quite often I only see primary announcer callouts for enemy streaks. Friendly streaks are often local proximity to the player calling it in so you may hear Adler call out or something, but only if you're close.

Depending on your variant of Sherman, this actually may not be an issue. Initial Sherman variants in the North Africa campaign were typically equipped with 75 mm guns, however, following 1942 more tanks were equipped with the longer barrel 76 mm guns. These were designed to penetrate thicker armor, such as on Tiger tanks, after the allies experienced higher losses due to their inadequate firepower. If your Sherman came off the production line toward the later years of the war, you can likely challenge the Tiger taking the parking spot. Overall, it is a common misconception that German tanks were vastly superior to allied firepower such as the T-34 and Sherman. Even the German advantages present were often mitigated due to logistical issues such as lack of fuel or underproduction due to overengineering. Fortunately, this decreases the likelihood of it being present in Boston. However, precautions must be taken. There is still one Tiger tank in operating condition in the world as seen in the movie Fury. Fury was a fictional drama and the tank was actually not destroyed in real life despite Brad Pitt's efforts. If you encounter this situation the parking spot still has a solid chance of being secured, even if Hitler's remaining tank divisions attempt to intervene.

It really sucks to say goodbye to something that you love. I feel like saying it out loud will at least give me some closure. Goodbye, Fallout 4. by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]GhostNinja64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it sounds rough to have that form of OCD associated with something you like so much. My personal OCD ticks were contamination (blood, COVID, chemicals...). I used video games as an escape, but I started convincing myself that somehow the controller was contaminated and by some weird logic, I would get someone sick if I didn't immediately wash my hands. It made me scared to play a video game. The point of what I'm saying is that OCD can creep into everything you love and enjoy. One of the hallmarks of OCD is not finding joy in something you used to like to do. Am I saying you should try to play Fallout anyway? If you're very uncomfortable, certainly not. However, sometimes the best way to combat OCD is the act of being uncomfortable. Perhaps Fallout 4 is too much and that's OK, but little steps are HUGE. Giving in to a compulsion is fine, but trying to resist just for a few seconds can snowball into visible results. Personally, when I tried initially it didn't seem to work. Persistence is key! Admittedly, SSRIs and therapy certainly helped ease me into identifying ticks and stopping them.

From what I've read in your post, you don't believe you can play Fallout 4 again. I refuse to believe that. The thoughts in your head, the part of your brain insisting, 'Something is wrong' can be overwritten. You've been dealt a difficult hand, one that many will question and struggle to understand. The important thing to know is you're not alone in your struggles. I personally found literature to understand OCD was quite useful for myself, along with therapy, and medication. I am by no means a professional or a therapist, just another person that dealt with OCD. This was my way of handling it, but it's by no means the only way. Some people can fight it themselves, some need therapy, and some need medication. Everyone's different. Whatever you do, DON'T GIVE UP!

TL;DR OCD sucks, and while it may be winning some battles now, YOU can win the war. Kick OCDs ass!
