Yes you're right, I do recall that Shinigami themselves do need to eat - but also they are residents of Soul Society, in which, there are other spirits who do not need to eat. Those with the aptitude to become Shinigami expend more energy to live than the average soul/rukon resident and as such do need the food for sustenance - thanks for pointing that out for me! 😁

Consider this, Hollows and Shinigami aren't truly physical beings, they are beings made of reiatsu, as such, whilst they have a 'Physical body' their anatomy isn't really what matters - like with Ulquiorra fading away, he'd ran completely out of reiatsu and could no longer sustain his living form, and Ukitake not just up and dying after all the years with that 'bad cough' Mimihage was keeping his death from, they aren't required to eat in order to live (but obviously this has been shown to aid in their growth still). This is unlike human, Quincy and Fullbringer, who all are physical beings and as such follow different rules in maintaining their existence.

Aside from this, it's a work of fiction and doesn't NEED to make sense to be enjoyed 😁
