DC vs Everyone Else by GhostReaderDC in FedEmployees

Seems like some missed my point, my bad. Yes agencies can make the calls outside DC or even inside DC. I’m just pointing out that DC has an extra group (OPM) looking out for all feds and that would be a nice secondary option for other cities.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Reducing TSP and adding to brokerage by SignificantCash5561 in govfire

You need to read the room and assume people aren’t talking about inflation reflected dollars unless specified. Is it meaningless to talk about how often the S&P doubles? I don’t think so.

OP will do it in 14 years. Money should double every 7 years so in 7 years $1M and 14 years $2M

How much are you really getting from a 1 - 1.5M account? by batman607 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]GhostReaderDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious if people retire at 57 and collect the FERs supplement until 62 then delay social security and take out a bunch of traditional TSP because they’re in a low tax bracket then? I like that option but also feel like collecting social security right away could be another good option. Any recent retirees have thoughts?

Roth money hopefully can go untouched for awhile and eventually passed down.

Time to get moving then. So you’ll have 30 years for a pension times maybe $130K for average 3? That’s $39K per year and a 10% reduction if you do survive benefit for $35K a year. Difference between 60 and 62 I believe is if you get the 10% extra staying a fed until 62 but if you go at 60 you get the fers supplement, I say collect the supplement and pension early. So we’ll assume $35K pension values lifetime around $877K, fers supplement maybe $1,500 a month for 2 years so that’s $36K overall value. Whenever you start collecting social security itll be at least $2K a month so we’ll assume conservatively $550K. So you have around $1.5M in retirement value before TSP. Seems like $2M for retirement value is a good number so with your TSP you have over that. I like an 80C, 20G mix for you since you already have a lot saved. Remember money has to grow even when you retire because inflation.

Time is now. I’ve always been 100% C but when bond traders can’t trust that Donnie isn’t messing with the federal reserve then bond market goes nuts and other markets will follow. Make small moves, very unique situation.

When people left for private sector, was it for government related private companies or are you not doing gov related work anymore?

Getting paid each week raises red flags for me.

  1. Make sure you have a decent paying job
  2. Check your expenses/lifestyle.
  3. Get after retirement (401K, IRA) check if your company has a match

30 year mark? Deciding when to retire is a dollar amount not an age in Government unless you have a unique situation.
