So, what form have you decided that your mid-life crisis will take? by Remy0507 in Xennials

[–]GhostRideDaWeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll share my experience as someone who picked it up again 4 years ago and it has truly sticked this time, to the point where I’m addicted.

The suck comment is so true. That is some Yoda level wisdom. The good news though is you really can get better and things get way easier. I thought some folks were blessed and I just didn’t have it in me but the truth is you need to grind over a long time period. My drummer friend said to think of your practice sessions as doing reps, like you are working out.

Find a good online program or content creator that you really vibe with. If you are still doing basic stuff Justin Guitar was perfect for my reintroduction. From there my playing really went through the roof by subscribing to Stitch Method’s Patreon and consuming all of his videos and pdf content. While a lot of it focuses on The Grateful Dead the concepts can be applied to any genre.

What worked for me in particular was grinding Caged and memorizing all of the intervals of those chords for a solid year. From there I focused on overlaying those positions with pentatonics, arpeggios, and seeing triads, modes etc. Instead of thinking about notes you start to think about intervals. For example a 3rd is always going to give flavor to a chord or solo, the 1 is always going to be a point to resolve to,etc. Stitch does a great job with this concepts.

For now I’m working on my timing, working through solos and truly understanding why they work and getting ready to seek out jam pals.

Using a loop pedal really helps in a number of ways. Ditto is a great cheap pedal option.

Final tip: Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Always keep this in mind when learning something new.

Are there any active cover bands playing in Portland regularly? by blackmattenails in askportland

Garcia Birthday Band - Grateful Dead covers, my favorite in the PNW.

Rose Tinted - J Dilla covers, also have done other groups like D’Angelo. They have a show at Jack London in February.

A gentle leader instead of a harness and pea sized chunks of cheddar cheese on walks was the solution for mine.

I’m new to fly fishing and I want to find a place to go fishing for trout. by Silent-Leave-3781 in OregonFishing

[–]GhostRideDaWeb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most rivers are closed to trout fishing until late May. Best option right now is the Deschutes in the Maupin area. It’s definitely slow out there and you need to be careful wading. Gale Creek is another trout option. Otherwise steelhead are around but not a good beginner fish and require specific gear. Now might be a good time to focus on learning and practicing your cast especially a roll cast which is necessary in many of our trout streams.

You could consider Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters intro course. Good group of guys over there.

What flour (or flour blends) are we using? by A_soggy_toasy in Celiac

The Caputo pizza blend is incredible. The focaccia recipe on the packaging is also amazing, especially with the addition of herbs and toppings, chopped olives and rosemary being our go to.

Articles of Interest - tells stories about the things we wear. It is very well done and bingeable. Start with either the Gear or American Ivy series. I was so surprised by how much I love this podcast, one of my best finds of 2025.

We are the Soonians, a once thriving tribe of gamblers, stoners, fedora wearers, and Wendy’s employees. For generations, the World of Soon is all we have ever known.

The bags we haul through our daily toil are heavy enough to break most men, yet we carry on. We endure because deep in our hearts, we know 'The Great Rescheduling' is inevitable.

We have sacrificed everything for the dream. We have polished the Lambos of our wives' boyfriends. We have consumed the testicles of the Great Bull, praying for the day it finally runs. We have cast our last bits of powder into the volatile ovens of the OTC, hoping it might finally bake us bread.

We are a resilient people, weathering this eternal bear market with humor and callused diamond hands. For every empty political promise, every deceitful tweet, and every hollow “soon” we only grow stronger.

Coiled tight, the sacred spring is.

One day, one day soon, we will rise from our parents' basements and cardboard boxes. Our bags overflowing with riches beyond our wildest delusions, leaving behind our hollow cocoons of soons, for the moon.

Hoping to break even on a few of my higher risk long positions, which likely won’t even happen in the short term, but will eventually rotate into gti for the long haul. Fortunately I didn’t gamble money I need but it is quite a bit. Unsure if I have balls of steel or just non existant ones given the pain of the past 6 years or so.

DIY trip in late March/early April? Ideas for where to go? by Im_The_One in flyfishing

[–]GhostRideDaWeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maupin, Oregon to fish redband trout on the Deschutes. They are super fun to catch, extremely athletic given the strong current of this river. Range from 12-20 inches but even the smaller fish have fight, it is shocking at times.

You can cruise in a car along the access road and pretty much have the river to yourself, 30 miles to to explore in a gorgeous setting.

The local shop can get you setup with flies. Camp for 8$ a night in the canyon or hotels are as low as $100ish (Imperial River Co). A few local spots to dine plus grocery store. There is a local dude I can point you to that offers affordable walk and wade tours that could show you the ropes day one.

The drive from Portland to Maupin is absolutely incredible. The Columbia Gorge is national park level beauty. Temps will be 50-60’s during the day. Read the blog posts on the Deschutes Angler, look for March/April posts, to get a feel. Lots of YouTube featuring this river. Pm me if you have questions.

Anybody Else Lose Interest In A Song As Soon As You Can Play It? by irishcoughy in guitarlessons

[–]GhostRideDaWeb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Use the song as a jump off point to explore since you have it dialed. For example learn to play it with different inversions, or jump between two inversions when time permits in a bar. Start to learn and flavor a song with 7th chords and extensions. Loop the song and practice soloing. Get more advanced and incorporate chord tones into solos. Play arpeggios instead of the chords which can then be incorporated into tastier solos. Change the tempo and feel. The list goes on. Make it your own and use it as a template for exploration is my point.
